This indenture in 1784 is the last known entry in records for Laurence Small, he appeared in a 1783 tax list, but in 1785 he is absent. It is assumed that he died shortly after Aug 1784.

The only link between John and Nancy McNeely Small and this William Small is from a narrative written in 1935 by Abbie Small, who asserts her ancestors were traced back to William Small and Mary Henderson. No other source has been found to confirm this assertion. Logan Co., KY records do show an association between Mary Henderson Small, widow of William and several of their children, but William died intestate after an accident in 1805-6 and no concrete link can be established between him and the alleged children who appear in early Spencer and Warrick Co., IN records. The Wills and administrations book A, in Logan County Courthouse was stolen in the 1980's.


In the first US census, William Small is listed on page 47 under the title Heads of Families - Virginia, 1783, Amherst county.

In 1789 William is again listed in the census index, but he has moved to Madison Co. Kentucky, with his brother-in-law, John Henderson Jr.

There is another two Henderson's listed in the 1783 census, James Henderson with 6 in the household, and next door, Robert Henderson with 7 whites listed. Both these appear close to James Henderson and William Small, but William is listed between these Hendersons and Laurence Small. (William, and the Hendersons are listed in the middle column about 1/2 way down the list, Lawrence is in column 3 toward the top) About 20-30 families between William and Lawrence.

John Henderson appears well down the list from Laurence Small, and John is listed with 11 whites in his household. Joseph Henderson appears above him very close, and is listed as 1 in the household, apparently still single and living alone.

Laurence Small is listed in this census with two in the household, he and his wife apparently, at this time his children would be adults and living elsewhere. This is the last known mention of Laurence in Amherst, Nelson Va records. He is not found in any KY records.

This William Small is listed in the Will of John Henderson of Amherst Co. VA written in 1800. It lists him as the husband of Johns daughter Mary. William was killed accidently in 1806 as evidenced by a petition she filed in that year in Logan County Kentucky. The Abbie Small narrative written in 1925 listed him only as having died accidently, his children, four bothers came to Indiana after his death, their mother remained there in the Shaker community.

Mary is listed in the Shaker records as being born 4-4-1763 in Virginia, very likely in Amherst Co. where her father lived at the time of his death in 1800.

Another Shaker reference lists Joseph Small and his helpmate as being one of the founders of the religion there, along with some of his sisters. Josephs birth date indicates he is the son of Mary and William, his wife is Martha Ham as indicated by the marriage in Logan County records in 1802. Both of these individuals lived out their lives in the Shaker community and Joseph was responsible for enlisting Henrys wife and children into the community. It is also likely that Henry stayed for a time in the community, but did not remain with his wife there on a full time basis. He has children leave the community and join him, but since he is listed among the records of those living and dying in the community he apparently rejoined his wife and died in the community. She is listed as dying in the community at an old age, Indications are that he moved into and out of the community several times but did not remain full time. Polly is listed as visiting him and her mother in the shaker records, he in the area Near Shepherdsville, her mother living in Lincoln County.


1800 Second Census lists William Small in Logan county, the only Small listed on the tax list.

The 1810 census lists Mary as the head of household, (William being dead in 1806), Children listed are Two males 10-16 (William and James) Two females ages 0-10 (one likely is Sally, other Mehetable) one male aged 16-26 (likely Matthew), three females aged 10-16,(one possibly Peggy S. ) and one female aged 45+ which would be Mary Henderson Small.

Of the five females listed, we have only Sally as a confirmed member who moved with her brothers to Indiana and married there in Perry County. She being married there in 1816 and would be the first Small listed in that county. Her brothers William, Henry and James are listed for the first time as donating $250 each to build a bridge over lake Drain in 1818. Lake Drain is a small stream located just north of Rockport and the present day highway 66 crosses this stream, and is likely the location of the original bridge since it would connect Rockport to the county seat which at that time was in Canneltown in Perry County, north and around a large bend in the Ohio River.

A second daughter would be Mehetable, who was listed in the Shaker records and due to her age, has to be one of the children of this marriage also. Her birthplace is listed as Virginia. The remaining three females listed in the census can only be conjecture at this point due to the fact that Josephs, and Henrys children also show in the records and the linage of all those listed in the Shaker records has not yet been determined. There are a few exceptions to this, but most of those listed with birth dates after 1800 could be the offspring of more than one person and references made to the family found thus far do not indicate linage for all of them.

GRANTS SOUTH OF THE GREEN RIVER
A group of records entered from 1797 to 1866 known as Grants South of the Green River comprises twenty-nine books and includes 15,730 separate grants. These were known sometimes as Headright Claims, and were based upon an act of the Ky, General Assembly of Dec. 21, 1795, and are listed in Chapt. 4. Prior to the establishment of Kentucky as a state, Virginia had reserved for her soldiers all the lands in Kentucky south of the Green River. Lands thus located under the Virginia law are of military origin and are listed in Chapt. 2. Until 1797 no person could enter a survey within this great reservation, except a soldier. When Kentucky as a sovereign state took charge of her vacant lands, new legislation opened up this great reservation south of the Green River to any persons possessed of family and over twenty one years of age. Such persons were entitled to not less than 100 acres or more than 200 acres, but must have been bona fide settlers on the land for one year before they came into actual possession. The surveys upon which these grants are based are recorded in 18 volumes in the Kentucky Land Office.

NOTE: Thomas and Matthew bought land in Green county, they may not be related to the above Henry, Joesph, William and John. However, at the time of these land transactions, Green County was formed from Lincoln and Nelson in 1793. At that time, Logan, Green and Lincoln occupied the entire land mass South of the Green river, with the exception of the portion West of the Tennessee River, which were still Indian lands.

On 12-12-1807 John Small surveys 170 acres on the Gasper River.

On 2-17-1806 Mary Small filed the following document with the Court in Russellville, Logan County. Notation on the border states; Small to deed Dickey (Examined). This from an early deed book in the Clerks office at Russellville:

"Know all men by these presents that I Mary Small of Logan County & State of Kentucky, Widow of William Small deceased deliver good causes me hereunto moving have ordained, constituted and authorized & by these do ordain, constitute appoint and authorize John Dickey of 'County and State my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name to collect receive and in my name receipt for all and every singular the legacy or legacy s left me by John Henderson my father of Amherst County state of Virginia deed and all (illeg.) my legal part or parts of said John Hendersons estate legally coming to me by last Will or any other way & further I do hereby empower & fully authorize my said attorney in my name for me & to my proper use and behalf to sue for and recover said legacy or legacy s or part or parts my said fathers estate legally coming to me & to use all legal measures necessary to said purpose of recovery of said premises & do by presents ratify and confirm all & singular every legal measure which my said attorney shall pursue about said premises hereby authorizing such legal measures as I myself could or might pursue were I personally present In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name & affixed my seal this 21st day of April 1806."
This was witnessed and recorded by Armistead Morehead and entered into the record on 4-22-1806.


In 1811 Mary filed a deed in the Russellville courthouse for 202 acres of land, this was done after her husbands accidental death. He died in 1806.

This may have been property purchased by William, or as a settlement of her fathers estate. She received 75 Pounds as her part of her fathers estate, and could have purchased property amounting to several hundred acres for that amount. At that time, 100 acres could be purchased for $20. per 100, with a limit of 200 acres under the provision on Grants South of the Green River. A copy of this deed is unavailable, she may have transferred it to the Shakers also.

This family page contains names of alleged children of William and Mary Henderson Small who are not all confirmed as members of this family. The only ones currently documented as being actual descendents are John, James, William, Henry, Sally, Matthew, Mehetable and Joseph. The balance are placed based on records from the Shaker community but we have as yet not found references that tie them directly to the family. Mary Henderson Small is listed as an heir of her fathers estate in his will dated 1800. She filed a deed for her land in 1811 for 202 acres located in Logan Co. KY. It was after the death of her husband, who died accidently in 1806. (between 5-1805 and 2-1806)

It is unknown who the land was deeded to but likely to the Shaker community where she lived after William died. The records in the Shaker community indicate she moved there the same year and had three small children with her at that time, going to the Mill House.
There were other Smalls who joined about the same time and its likely they are her older children, of age and listed separately.

She died there in 1836, her birth and death records are listed and place her birth as Virginia.

Searches of both the Small and Henderson family indicates there is a large group that are in Virginia before William Small. This group belonged to the Quakers, and came from England. William Small may be related to this group, it is unknown at this time. It is more likely that they are from the group that emigrated from Ireland and Scotland, and if related to the ones who migrated from Virginia to North Carolina, it is further back in England. Whether William is related to them has not been found.

William Small was a native of the State of Virginia. His father was a wagon-master in the Continental Army during the Revolution while a brother of his father, a Tory, was a Colonel in the English Army. The family are of Scotch Irish origin and are, according to residence and service indications, entitled to all the honors due original and patriotic Americans.

Virginia Short History

In 1730 there was a large immigration from Pennsylvania into Virginia of Scotch-Irish, most settled in the upper valleys. The Welsh Baptist Church, the English Quakers and Scotch Presbyterians flourished in that section.

Until 1786 the Anglican Church was the State Church of Virginia. Following English custom and law, as an agency of the government, the church was responsible for maintaining a system of Parish Registers recording Vital statistics. Very few such registers survived, owing mostly to the destruction of records located in counties where civil war raged and records were destroyed by either the union or rebel fire. In some cases buildings were destroyed to keep the enemy from the use of the building.

The Quit Rent list is used as a census report or schedule. In 1704 all Virginia landowners, except those in Lancaster, Northumberland, Westmoreland, Richmond and Stafford Counties, had to pay the King a Quit Rent of one shilling for each fifty acres bought.

In 1780 Kentucky County encompassed all of the present day state of Kentucky, and was divided into three new counties, Lincoln, Jefferson and Fayette.

Lincoln, Jefferson and Fayette were then split into smaller land areas as the population grew within their boundaries.

Most of the original counties of Virginia centered around the Chesapeake Bay, with their western borders sometimes extending west into an unknown, and largely unexplored wilderness.

Orange County, formed in 1734, was the first created by Virginia which spoke of its western boundary as the utmost limits of Virginia; and covered an area from the crest of the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, West to the valley and follows roughly the same line as the present boundary between Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky.

Augusta County was formed from the same land area as Orange, which at that time had shrunk to its approximate boundary today. Augusta covered the area began with the crest of the Blue Ridge, and spilled over beyond the Allegheny Mountains, its western boundary was the Mississippi River.

In 1770, Botetourt covered the southern ½ of West Virginia and all of Kentucky. At that time Augusta then covered the northern ½ of West Virginia.

In 1772 Fincastle County covered all of Kentucky and the lower 1/3 of West Virginia, Botetourt County covered the middle portion of West Virginia, and Augusta the Northern one third. In 1776 Augusta was split into two parts, the larger being the district of West Augusta, Amherst County was formed in 1761 from Albemarle, and covered an area encompassing present day Nelson County.

The earliest members of the Small family that can be traced to this area are found in the records of the Rev. John Craig, minister of the Tinkling Springs Church located in present day Augusta County. The Rev. Craig served many of the early settlers in areas that were far from his established church at Tinkling Spring.

On 8 March 1741, the Reverend Craig visited the Rockfish meeting house, then located in Albemarle Co. VA, just over the Blue Ridge from Augusta, and baptized several small children, among whom were two daughters of John and Lawrence Small.

The Genealogy of John Small is well documented. His will written in 1790 does not mention an heir named William Small, and no proof of any relationship with William has been found. He may have named a son William, who died prior to his own death, but John's will does not name any heirs of William in the will either.

That a relationship did exist between Lawrence Small and William is found in several deeds and indentures that William either witnesses for Lawrence, or were indentures between them. However, none indicate what that relationship would have been. That they were not of the same generation is likely due to the dates when they first both appear, and the fact that the birth of William's spouse, Mary Henderson is in 1763, some 22 years after the Baptism by Lawrence of his daughter Mary, indicates this is likely also.

No birth, marriage or death information is available for either Lawrence or William. Lawrence appears in the 1783 census of VA, with two individuals in his household. but is absent in 1785. If it can be assumed that Lawrence and his unknown spouse were alive during the first census, and both deceased by 1785. A Will should appear in Amherst Co., VA for him, but none exists. Strangely, no child has been found in later generations named for him. The names James, John, Joseph, William and Henry do repeat in each generation, and the habit of the wife's maiden name taken as a middle name appears quite often in later generations, but nothing to indicate why Lawrence is never mentioned.

Likewise, no birth or marriage record has been found for William, and it is likely he was born in Albemarle Co. VA (later Amherst), likely married there since he is mentioned in the will of his father-in-law John Henderson in 1800 in Amherst Co. VA.

Also no death record has been found, or probate of his estate in Logan Co. KY, where he apparently was accidently killed in 1805-6.

Mary Henderson Small, widow of William is listed as head of household in the 1810 census, but her children are only listed as male and female. Later census records do not show them as a family since they joined the Shaker community at South Union in 1811; and, the older children had moved on to Spencer Co. IN before the next census in 1820.

Latter Day Saints family pedigree lists Mary's birth as 1744, which conflicts with her birth as listed in the Shaker Records. It does however, confirm her marriage to William Small and lists John and Nancy McNeely and child and spouse. LDS

Mary Henderson Small is listed as an heir of her fathers estate in his will dated 1800.

Mary Henderson Small filed a deed for her land in 1811, 202 acres. It was after the death of her husband, who died accidently in 1806.

It is unknown who the land was deeded to, but likely to the Shaker community where she lived after William died. She died in the community at age 80 in 1836 and her birth and death record is listed there. A notation in the Shaker records states she was admitted in 1811 with three small children going to the Mill house; it is likely that other references at that time were for other children also, but they were of age.

The Shakers first arrived in Logan County on October 17, 1807 when Issachar Bates, Matthew Houston and Richard McNemur, missionaries came to the Gasper River community and were entertained in the home of the pastor of the Gasper River Presbyterian church, and a very familiar name within the Shaker community for many years, the Reverend John Rankin.

The Shakers first arrived in the settlement called Paint Lick, in Garrard County Kentucky March 3 1805.
By 1807 most of the congregation of the Gasper River Presbyterian Church, including the pastor John Rankin had joined the United Society of Believers, or, Shakers, and by 1810, had acquired some 2500 acres of prime farmland, and the village of Shakertown was established. The meeting house and school were early buildings and an organizational meeting was held in September 1811.

"Will Day" when property of the Church members was made over to the society occurred on January 31, 1822, and because of fluctuations in membership, on October 12, 1830 a Covenant was written and members asked to sign which prohibited anyone who decided to leave from seeking recovery of their property in the courts.

The Cardinal beliefs and practices of the Shakers was four-fold. Communal organization, Celibacy, Doctrines and Exercises.

Communal living consisted of comfortable but plain and well governed villages which were owned by the entire community. All just debts and assets were shared by everyone.

Celibacy, Men and women, husbands and wives lived apart. The houses were built with separate stairs, one for women, the other for men. When communing together, Men were on one side of the room, the women the other. No women went anywhere by herself, always being accompanied by another woman. If men were away on business, another man went along to "keep him company"

They did not live as families, the children were separated, boys living in one group and girls in another. The community as a whole was considered the family. Notations in records indicate names such as East family, Church and North family, and a separate group known as Black family where Negroes lived separate from whites. Each indicated a building within the community where a portion of the members lived. There were other locations, Watervaliet for the children, and school family.

Doctrines, based on the assumption that the 2nd coming was that of Mother Ann Lee, but most doctrines followed the general faith and practice of the Bible.

Exercises, or dance from which the Shakers received their nickname consisted of a peculiar form of dance, similar in nature to folk dancing, but members would sometimes work themselves into a frenzy and shake uncontrollably, sometimes falling to the floor while chanting hymns.

The Shakers were a practical bunch, scorning the frills of their modern day counterparts. Theirs was a more strict adherance to need, and function. Their buildings and furniture served a purpose, mostly plain in design without decoration. Since decoration was nothing more than to satisfy personal desires, it was prohibited in most cases. If the design did not perform a function it was absent from Shaker work.

In the case of high backed Shaker chairs, one would assume the high back to be a form of decoration. But in use in the Shaker community, it had its purpose.

If one were to visit the museum at South Union today, you would find a large brick building, with a large room filled with these high backed Shaker chairs. At meeting time, members would file into the building, walk into the large foyer where they would find chairs hanging on wooden pegs, almost at eye level. They would remove the chair from the peg, remove their coat and hang it on the peg. They would then carry their chair into the meeting room and sit down, men on one side, women on the other; and both using separate entrances to avoid contact with the opposite sex.

When the meeting was completed, members would pick up their chairs, return to the foyer, remove coats and replace the chair on the peg, its place when unused, hanging above the floor on its peg.

So what does all this have to do with function? Very simple. In winter, head and hand protection could be removed and placed on the chair seat while the coat was placed on the peg. The high back placed the chair seat at a convenient height while on the peg since head and hand gear was removed first. Chairs hanging from pegs on the walls do not have to be moved when the floor needs to be swept and mopped.

It would appear 14 months lapsed between the writing of the convnant and the date all were willing to sign. In effect, they signed over, and forever barred themselves from having any property returned to them if they decided at a later date to leave the society, and apparently gave up their personal property to the society as a condition of being a member.

"Our funerals have not thus far been described. They were, and are, devoid of all ostentation, and even the ground in which we are interred, would never be suspected of being a cemetery. It is leveled off and planted in forest trees, and the spot where the remains of our dear friends lay, is not marked by even a head or foot-stone. When one has deceased, the cadaver is washed and wrapped in a shroud. At the proper time it is placed in the coffin and allowed to be viewed by all who desire, and especially at the close of the funeral. All who reasonably can, are required to attend funerals, and if the weather is favorable, also the burial. When the members are assembled, a solemn hymn is sung, and then all are seated. The meeting is then addressed by the elder, or some one appointed to this gift. This is generally followed by short and sententious discourse from any who feel so disposed. In these expressions of sentiment, as well as that of the chief speaker, an affectionate reference is had to the merits and good qualities that were characteristic of the deceased; and also to the necessity of living a life here, that shall recommend us to the Heavenly Home and the happy scenes to be enjoyed by those who faithfully live in obedience to their highest consciousness of right, while passing through the shades and shadows of this rudimental sphere. The funeral lasts sufficiently long to give every one an opportunity to speak who desire it, and a second hymn, and a last view of the corpse closes the ceremonies."

Note: 1 2 Thomas was the first child with Mary Tinkler. There was at least one other child born to Enoch with his first wife Sarah Sally Small. Church and Family History Research Assistance for Clay County, Illinois Salem Church, one mile west of Xenia, was organized at the home of Leonard Piles (in Marion County) on August 25, 1828, with Elder Elias Roberts and others present forming the presbytery. The charter members were Absalom Sargent, Jessie Tinkler, Enoch Garrett, Elizabeth Tinkler, Elizabeth Sargent, Polly Garrett, Phoebe Baldwin, Mary Sharp and Susannah Goner. Because of the loss of early records, little is known except that the church continued to meet regularly. In February 1864 the records disclose that services were being held in a log house located about one-fourth mile north of the present meeting house. Two other buildings also preceded the present well-kept building, which was erected in 1939. Over 500 persons attended the dedication services and basket dinner that followed on the church grounds. Elder Benjamin Coats was pastor, and John L. Whitman was clerk, in 1864. Elder Coats was ordained to the ministry in 1830, and probably served as pastor much of the time for which the records are missing. He was followed by Elders J. B. Dobbs, Cina Greathouse, S. I. Gardner, H. J. Gwaltney, Delbert E. Baker, Joy D. Vandeveer, Cecil Fuson, and Willie Huffine, the present pastor.

Note: Enoch and Mary moved to Illinois in 1840. Mary as widow on 1850 Madison Co. IL census page 475/image 286 with children: Malvina E. 17, Thomas M. 14, Susannah R. 13, Marava 11, Enoch 6, and Silas 4. On the 1860 Crawford Co. AR census page 729/image 135 Thomas' mother Mary was living with them at the age of 55.

Deed book #1 lists John H., his wife Nancy and brother Martin Harmon as heirs of Abraham Harmon deceased, make an indenture for 80 acres of land located in Luce Township, E1/2 of NW 1/4 of Sec 2 in Twp 8 South of Range 7W and dated 11-21-1834. Deed was filed same day.

On 11-21-1841 these three again make an indenture for an additional 40 acres of land in the section North of their property, Sec 35, twp 7 range 7.

State of Indiana Spencer County
Know all who it may concern that I Nancy Shoptaugh widow of Peter Shoptaugh late deceased of County and state aforesaid do make this my last will and testament to wit.

That all my just debts be paid out of my personal assets and that my real estate be equally divided between Mary Shoptaugh, John Henry Shoptaugh and William Thomas Shoptaugh on the condition that neither one of said parties named Mary Shoptaugh J H Shoptaugh WM T Shoptaugh sell their part or interest in such real estate to any other person or party excepting one of these three and in case of death or vacation by either one of said parties the interest of such decedent on vacation shall descend to the other two surviving or or occupying parties and that all the other children of my body namely, Sarah Ash or her heirs, Indiana Jackson, Nancy White, Esau Shoptaugh, Rebecca Woody, Matilda Kerrick, Missouri Shoptaugh, and Hardin Small shall receive from my personal assets the sum of five dollars which either from my hand or from Mary Shoptaugh, John Shoptaugh and William Shoptaugh within one year from my decease and the conditions of this my will further is that my daughter Missouri Shoptaugh shall have and hold a right to live and remain on these my premises as her home so long as she may remain unmarried and the provisions of this will is such that I retain full control of use of said property until my decease when my interest in the same shall descend to the persons before named and in the manner before described this 18th day of September 1876

In 1833, James E. and his Mother purchased 80 acres of land from her daughter and her husband, Peter and Nancy Small Shoptaugh. They built a home and she lived with her son until she died in 1850.

James E. Small's middle name was discovered on a land patent dated 10-1-1840. the land patent was granted by President Martin Van Buren.

The surname or given name Ewing does not appear in this branch of the family, however, a Cumberland Presbyterian minister in Logan County KY named Finis Ewing (1773-1841) may be the individual who James E. is named for. Another Ewing is buried in the Red River Meeting House cemetery, General Robert Ewing, veteran of both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. It's possible he was named for this individual also. Red River Meeting House is located near South Union in Logan County.

Going off - Dinwiddie Small goes this morning with his brother Napoleon to his father's in Louisville

Dinwiddie wrote a genealogy of his family in his bible.
According to William (Bill) Small ([email protected]) he was called Dinwiddie in Shaker records, but first name was John.

Napoleon and John D. bought land in sections near each other in the same township and range when they moved to Miss. Co.

John D. and Napoleon's wife Marietta were administrators on Napoleon's estate in 1863.

In John D.'s estate in 1864, their was a bill from the local doctor for treatment over the previous year. The name on the top was J. Dinwidie Small.

There appears to be a discrepancy in the death date of John D. The cemetery inscription (stone is broken) gives death as 1863, yet a court record I have would indicate he must have died after April 11, 1864. An estate packet dated 18 Nov., 1864 , shows receipt for burial expenses 22 Oct., 1864.

- On a tintype I inherited of Caroline are written the words Caroline Small wife of John D. who was assasinated by Green Thurman at age of 44 at his home near Concord Cemetery, Concord neighborhood, MO. I don't know whose handwriting this is, but Concord neighborhood is a part of Charleston, MO.

I visited Miss Co, MO last week. I think I have made a positive link between John D. Small and Dinwiddie. I found the following:

1. John D. was never listed as John Denwood anywhere. This was just passed down and does not appear to be true.
2. Napoleon and John D. bought land in sections near each other in the same township and range when they moved to Miss. Co.
3. John D. and Napoleon's wife Marietta were administrators on Napoleon's estate in 1863.
4. In John D.'s estate in 1864, their was a bill from the local doctor for treatment over the previous year. The name on the top was J. Dinwidie Small.

I think this proves the connection between John D. and Dinwiddie. It also means you and I are related, like it or not. I'm going to continue working on the descendants of Napoleon and John Dinwiddie. I'll pass you anything I find. Talk to you later.

Listed as deceased in his father James' will written in 1875, listed in 1850 census as head of household with his wife Ann S. Howard. A Hiram Stuteville is listed with the family, assume this individual is related by marriage and would be a cousin and possibly a bother of Mary Stuteville, James' 2nd wife.

1850 census lists him and wife, no children. Hiram Stuteville age 19 living with the family.
1860 census does not list this family unit, but lists children who would be of the proper age living with his father James. Children of John W. were mentioned in his will in 1875, listing the children as heirs of John W. deceased. No other family member of either marriage has children who fit except John W, These children were added to this family unit based on this information.

His death date is affixed in the same manner, he would have been alive in the 1850 census, had three children, the last being born in 1859, his death was prior to the 1860 census. This places his death date 1858-1859.

Likewise, Ann is not listed with her children in the 1860 census, it is assumed that she died at the same time as her husband. She is not mentioned in James' will either. Since Hiram Stuteville was living with this family in the 1850 census, if Ann had survived, he would have been able to provide help to the family without them moving in with their grandfather.1850 census indicates Hiram Stuteville, age 19 was living with the family.

Altus Methodist Episcopal Church South was organized July 1887 by elders: J.M. Lawrence, A.S. Pettie and Rev. Robert M. Small. Church is located in Altus Arkansas. It is still the only Baptist Church in town (small town). Rev. Robert M. Small preached at the church for a time.

According to a 4 page history on the Small family written by Abbie Small in 1925, Bailey built a church of logs on his farm of Baptist faith, he was deeply religious. [The cemetery that was behind the church is noted by two names, Bailey Small Cemetery, and Ohio Baptist Church Cemetery.]
Many of the older residents remember the old church, some of them were converted there. The church is gone but graves of Grandfather and Mother and their children, and grandchildren and some great grandchildren are there. Also some of the other pioneer settlers. Grandfather was a judge along in the thirties and he with another pioneer and wealthy landowner, Abraham Stryker, for whom Strykers landing was named, collected the taxes.
Grandmother told of them recounting the money in the evenings from their saddle bags.
Then thereafter, came the Civil War. His sons to manhood grown, some married with families of their own, were the first to respond. My Grandfather and Grandmothers contribution to the defense of the cause, was six sons and two sons-in-law. My grandfather visited the little log church each day and prayed for the safe return of his brave sons, and he was rewarded. Every one of them got home.
Bailey W. was a first lieutenant of his company and would have been captain, his captain being killed, but was forced to resign on account of disability. Martin, my father, was just 17, the youngest of seven boys, he too must go.
Served three years, enlisted again, has two honorable discharges at Washington. He was wounded at Missionary Ridge, (Battle of Stone Mountain), which eventually caused his death in 1883. He married Nancy A. Thomas in 1872. There were four children, Maxwell, Lulu, Abbie, and Bert M.

According to Abbie Small's narrative, James and wife Mary Stuteville are buried in the Ohio Baptist Cem., although no stones were found.

The census record taken in Spencer county on 6-24-1860 lists this individual as James Small age 4, or born in 1856.
The stone located in the Bailey Small cemetery reads as follows:

Davis, J.M., Co. K, 25th Ind Inf. is next to him and is John M. husband of Sarah Elizabeth Small.
The stone for Davis, James S. is an obvious error since the census record lists him in 1860 as being 4 years old, if the stone were correct he would not even be listed in the census because it was taken before the birth date on the stone.
Previous efforts by us as recorders listed him as a possible illegitimate son of Sarah E. due to the census record listing him as James Small. We obviously took his middle name to be his last and have recorded him incorrectly as being out of wedlock. I apologize on behalf of previous recordings placed in library s in Spencer, Warrick counties and the Evansville Library by myself and other recorders.

Martin S. Small (3) was born in 1845 (birth date identified by 1860 Ohio Township, Spencer County, IN Census listing under James Small "head of household" and wife Mary a son named Martin S with age 15 for the 1860 census and this timeframe is repeated in the 1880 census)

I have all of Martin S. Small's service records from the civil war from the national archives. He did indeed join the Indiana 58th Regiment of Volunteers in 1861 in Princeton, IN (he was 16 years as stated on his muster sheet which verifies the 1845 date of birth). He was indeed wounded in the neck as listed on a casualty sheet on November 24th, 1863 at the storming of Missionary Ridge. He returned to duty in January 1864 and re-enlisted as a Veteran-Volunteer at the age of 18 years. He continued on with the regiment through Sherman's march to the sea and was mustered out July 25th 1865 in Louisville, KY as stated on his muster out sheet. It is listed that before he was mustered out he was absent due to a funeral, one would wonder if this was his Brother James C. Small who died during this timeframe.

Martin Small does not show up on any census records for 1870, but reappears on the 1880 census with his wife Nancy Angeline Thomas(Small) married on Sept 28th, 1872 (as verified by Spencer County Marriage documents).

In the 1890 census Martin Small does not appear which supports that he died on December 19th, 1883 before the 1890 census, also I have the document from Spencer County Death Records to prove this. On the 1990 census it shows Nancy Small as head of household with all children still living with her. Nancy continues to show up on the 1910 and 1920 census but not the 1930 which supports that she died 1929 before the census. I also found her pension claim for Martin Small in 1911 for his civil war action.

Lulu Small married Mosses H Keller(b: 1869) on December 24th, 1907. No records can be found of any children from the two and Moses is believed to have died early in the marriage. Lulu Keller is listed on the 1930 census as the Matron for "The Christian Home" a home for unwed mothers in Evansville, IN however no empirical evidence can support that this is Lulu Small.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century there came to Indiana four brothers of the name Small. John, William, Henry and James. They left their home in Kentucky after the death of their father (which was accidental), their mother having joined a religious Sect, called Shakers, of the community.
They crossed the Ohio River at Owensboro, then a cluster of small buildings called "Yellow Banks". They settled in Spencer Co. in Ohio and Luce Townships.

James, my grandfather, in about the year Eighteen hundred seventeen married a Miss Mary Wilkinson, aunt of the late John Wilkinson of Luce Township. Five children were born, Susan, Parmelia, William, John and Lee. and their came the demise of the wife and mother. After a time he was married to Miss Mary Stuteville, (my grandmother), cousin to late Elijah James and Jabez Stuteville. Her father Martin Stuteville had settled several hundred acres of the virgin forests, the lands extending from near Oak Grove down over the first hill in to the bottoms. My grandfather and grandmother after their marriage in eighteen twenty seven took possession of the homestead and to them ten children were born, Robert, Cynthia, Bailey W., James, Francis, Harrison, Sarah, Rozina, Martin and Margaret. There were thrilling tales of leaving their homes to cross the river to yellow banks while the brave frontiersmen battled with the Indians and drove them back so they (the women and children could come back to their homes.) And how they built pens for the calves and other things to keep the wolves and other beasts of prey from devouring them. There were no roads, just bridle paths. and salt was a luxury. took a cow and calf to purchase a bushel of salt. My Grandmother told of an old man who came to her house and begged for a pinch of salt "to give him a relish for his water". The men came in from the clearings at eleven o'clock, shouldered their guns and killed meat for dinner. Squirrel, wild turkey, and small game were abundant to say nothing of the large game that roamed the cane brakes of the bottoms.

Grandmother told of how and aunt, who was visiting at the home rested a gun on the window sill and shot a buck which had ventured out in the open near the house. They built rudely constructed roads, by which their ox teams could ply to and from the adjoining settlements.
My Grandfather built a church of logs on his farm of Baptist faith. He was deeply religious, many of the older residents remember the old church. Some of them were converted there. The church is gone but graves of grandfather and mother and their children and grand children and some great grand children are there. Also some of the other pioneer settlers. Grandfather was judge along in the thirties, and he with another pioneer and wealthy landowner, Abraham Stryker, for whom Strykers landing was named, collected the taxes. Grandmother told of them recounting the money in the evenings from their saddle bags.

Then thereafter came the Civil War. His sons to manhood grown some married with families of their own, were the first to respond. My grandfather and grandmothers contribution to the defense of the cause, was six sons and two sons in law. My grandfather visited the little log church each day and prayed for the safe return of his brave sons. and he was rewarded, everyone of them got home.

Bailey W was first lieutenant of his company and would have been captain, his captain having been killed but was forced to resign on account of disability. Martin, (my father) was just seventeen, the youngest of seven boys, he too must go, served three years, enlisted again, has two honorable discharges at Washington. He was wounded at missionary ridge, which eventually caused his death in 83. He married Nancy A Thomas in 1872, there were four children, Maxwell, Lulu, Abbie, and Bert M.

Abbie Small is listed as single for 1900,1910,1920,1930 census and lives with her mother Nancy until her death and then lives with Bert Martin Small her brother there after.

Notes for ALBERT "BERT" MARTIN SMALL:
Bert Martin Small never married and lived with his Mother Nancy and sister Abbie in Evansville, IN until his death. He is listed on the 1920 census as a patient at the Southern Indiana Hospital for the Insane. But after his mothers death he appears on the 1930 census as head of household over Abbie at their mother's old home.

After corresponding for a number of years, Joe suggested we take our research trips that we had been doing separately and time them so we could double our efforts and half our expenses by sharing both rooms and autos so we could hit cemeteries and courthouses together. We made two such trips together, and our time spent together were both rewarding from a genealogy sense, but also as a growing friendship between us.

One of the stories he told me, Joe was not given a middle name at birth. When his first wife found out he did not have one, she decided that he need one and named him Joseph Darwin, and he liked it and took it as his own.

Continuing the search for our ancestors alone is not nearly as much fun or as rewarding as when we did it together, and would excitedly call each other with a new discovery. Joe is greatly missed. Most of all, because I cannot tell him all the things I have found since his death.
