He married ANN BEVERIDGE Abt. 1776 in Cambridge, Washington County, New York (Source: Small, Archibald Robertson, M.D., Genealogy of the Robertson, Small and Related Families, (Albert Garrett Small, Indianapolis, 1907), page 167.), daughter of GEORGE BEVERIDGE and JANNET LOURIE. None of the information above provides a positive link between James and wife Ann Beverage and that of William Small, son of William and Isabel Farquharson. The assumption that this is true remains to be proven.

A smaller white house is also on the property, said to have been built for James's eldest son, Edward Small. It contains a fireplace with a crane and a large oven to one side. The latches on the doors are brass of the Norfolk type. The floors are very wide pine boards. The house is brick lined.

According to his grandson, John L. Richardson, "I lived with my grandfather, Edward Small, in the winter of 1874. I always thought he was a grand old man, of good common sense. He was what I would call to-day a model farmer--a place for everything, and everything in its place; six feet, two inches in height, broad shouldered; weighed over 200 pounds; no extra flesh; honest and upright in all dealings with his neighbors.
"He was a captain in the was of 1812; was at the battle of Plattsburg; had soldier's land warrant, but did not use it. He had a family of twelve children; eight lived to manhood."

"James Small of Jackson, died in the Albany hospital May 21, 1908, where he had gone a few days before for treatment. The Smalls were among the early settlers of the town of Jackson, and the greater part of Mr Small's life was spent on the farm where both his father and grandfather and many members of their families lived and died. He was one of eight children of Alexander and Elizabeth Maxwell Small, all but one of whom have proceeded him to the other shore. He was born Jan. 13, 1845, was married to Sarah Edie May 26, 1868. A few days more would have rounded out 40 years of Married life. Mrs. Small, a son and daughter survive. The funeral service was held May 23 at the home, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. T. Young, who took as the basis of his remarks the description given of Barnabas in Acts 11:24, "A good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith." He spoke of the need of good men in the church and in the world, but no one is taken away until his work is done. Rev. D. C. Stewart, D. D., of Salem, also made some fitting remarks along the same line. The best eulogy that could be given, Mr. Small was a good man, Psa. 23 and John 14 being his favorite scriptures. For 31 years he was an elder in the East Greenwich congregation. He was supervisor of the town of Jackson for three years and held other town offices. A large company of cousins, neighbors and friends gathered to show their respects to this good man. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, Salem."

Notes for MARGARET ARNOTT OVIATT:
The following is an autobiographical sketch written by Margaret Arnott Oviatt dated October 6, 1960:
"I was born in a farm house half way between Cambridge and Shushan. The house now stands and looks much as it did then. It is the first house across the road from Bill Morrison's (going toward Shushan). My mother Isabelle Arnott (always called Belle) died when I was three. My father Thomas D. Oviatt the following year. I do not know how much of a farmer my father was as his chief occupation was going West very often and bringing back a carload of horses, farm horses, driving horses, etc. The first children were twin boys named Francis and Samuel after the two grandfathers. They lived to be a year old and died of Cholera Infantism. That was the fall before George was born. He was born in March. A year and a half later in July Alex was born on July 7th. Nearly two years later on March 13, 1877 Lydia was born. Six years later on April 13, 1833 I was born, christened Margaret Arnott Oviatt after my grandmother.
Alex and George were playing and Alex fell off a high fence. It afterwards developed he injured his spine. A lump the size of a walnut appeared. Everything was done, he wore iron braces, but it continued to grow he had quite a hump on his back. He lived until he was nearly twenty one. Died of a heart attack.
When George was born both feet turned in. The cords above the heels were cut. And later years one would never notice that it had happened.
Father made a will naming Uncle Morrison McMillan as executor and guardian. Alex was always to be taken care of. Lydia and I until we were twenty one. And when George became twenty one he was to succeed Uncle Morrison.
Aunt Jane Arnott, Aunt Mary McMillan and Aunt Sarah McMillan took it upon themselves to divide up the household goods between themselves. Aunt Sarah saw something on the top shelf of the pantry she took to be tea. She threw it in the kitchen stove. It was gunpowder. Her eyebrows, eyelashes and hair around her face were badly burned. Aunt Mary gave what she took to George when he was married in August 1893. Mother's piano, silver, bed and table linens, etc. They went through with everything. Alex had died but Lydia and I did not get even a penny. Mother was a beautiful sewer. She had made applicaid quilts, plain quilts, etc.
Now for my wanderings. I first stayed a short time at Uncle Morrison's. Then I went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Olin Scott at Bennington. From there I went to live in Shushan (where Abbi Anton now lives) with the Anderson Browns. Mrs. Brown was a cousin of Mothers. Then Uncle Rea Arnott came in from Indiana and took Lydia, Alex and I back with him. Alex and I stayed with Aunt Jennie Carson at Idaville. Lydia with Uncle Sam at Cicot a small place on banks of Wabash River. We were there about a year or more and Lydia got lonesome so Uncle Rea brought us back. I landed at Aunt Harriet Johnson's the other side of the house where the Bensons lived. From there I went to live with Aunt Sarah and Jennie McMillan. When I was ten George and Alice were married so I went to live with them. I was with them about a year and a half. They first lived in Washington Street (the first house this side of Tommy Powers house.) Then moved to Madison Avenue first house up from Jack Deckers. Then George took a notion to go to the country. Alex Marshall owned the place where Emerson McLenithan now lives. He moved up there. That did not last long and he landed in East Greenwich. I was very handy to have to get meals, wash dishes and do things Alice did not like to do. So after Christmas they took me down to visit Aunt Sarah. She persuaded me to stay with her. When George came after me I ran and hid. She told him she did not know where I was. I was upstairs with the door locked. George produced a pistol and said he would be back later. After he went the Mac's were scared but told me I didn't have to go back to George's. I was bundled off to Shushan back to Aunt Harriet's where I stayed till Spring. Then I went back to Aunt Sarah's where I stayed until Lydia was married (January 31, 1901). We never heard directly anymore from George. He moved to Salem. Then eventually to Troy where for many years he was a collar cutter. Lydia came to Cambridge in 1893. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gifford took her and brought her up as if she were their own.
After graduating from High School I took a course in the Teachers Training Class. When I finished taught a year at the Schoolhouse at the foot of School-house Hill on the way to Greenwich. At that time the above qualification allowed me to enter Oneonta and finish a year there. Then I taught the fifth grade in Greenwich and later the fifth grade in Cambridge.
Fred and I were married November 10, 1908. We lived nineteen years on Small farm and in 1928 came to Cambridge and built this house. You know the rest.
May God bless and keep you. Love Mother."

Marriage Notes for ALFRED SMALL and MARGARET OVIATT:
From a newspaper clipping:
"A pretty November wedding took place at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Westfall, jr., at Cambridge, when her sister, Miss Margaret Arnott Oviatt, and Alfred Maxwell Small of East Greenwich were married. To the strains of the Bridal Chorus from "Lohengrin," played by Miss Bessie Hatch, Misses Grace Westfall and Edyth Snyder, dressed in white, entered, holding the ribbons which formed the aisle for the bridal party. Miss Marjorie Westfall, niece of the bride, followed, carrying a basket of roses. On the handle of the basket was a large bow of ribbon, in which was tied a wedding ring. Next came Miss Eva Carpenter, gowned in white silk batiste and carrying a bouquet of pink carnations, and then Mrs. D. M. Westfall, jr., wearing a dress of pale yellow satin, trimmed with Princess lace, and also carrying a bouquet of white carnations tied with yellow ribbon. The bride and groom followed. She wore a gown of white Swedish mousseline, with trimmings of Dutchess lace, and a tulle veil caught with roses. She carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses. Misses Katherine Kenward and Aleda Chandler, also dressed in white, were the last members of the party and removed the ribbons. Rev. Richard Turnbull performed the marriage in front of two unique pillars of palms and foliage. The decorations in the parlors and library were pink and white. In the dining room the color scheme was green and white. Mrs. James Coulter, dressed in white silk mull over white satin, and Miss May Atwood, also gowned in white, presided at the table. A delicious wedding super was served by the Misses Bessie Hatch, Katherine Kennard, Aleda Chandler, Nathena Cramer, Grace Billings, Fannie Billings, Edyth Snyder, Grace Westfall, Bessie Chandler. A Sudden Death
Discovered about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday by Her Husband
Who was Almost Overcome by Grief. Kind Friends Flocked to His Aid but to no Avail as Life was Extinct.
Everyone was horrified and the town was almost paralyzed as the news went from mouth to mouth that Mrs. Jack Porter was dead. People couldn't believe it. She was expecting her sister, Mrs. Pollack from Indiana the last of the week and wanted to have everything in order for her coming.
When it was said that she was dead people stood aghast and wondered if it could be so. Irvin was up at the house about 4 0'clock p.m., when she was lying on the bed asleep. He didn't disturb her but went up town again. She got up after that and took her bread from the oven, as it was still warm. She then took a bath and put on clean underwear for when her husband and Irvin went home to supper, she was sitting on the floor by a basin of water, soap, etc. and had her feet washed and dressed. Her head was thrown back against the window sill and foot of the bed.
Mr. Porter thought she had fainted and called for Mr. Blayney's folks who picked her up and laid her on the bed. Irvin was then sent for a doctor and Dr. Winbigler responded in a few minutes and pronounced it death.
What terrible news it must have been for the sister whose coming Mrs. Porter was anxiously looking for and the anticipated pleasure, upon her arrival to find her sister cold in death, with no salutation or word of greeting.
Surely we know not what a day may bring forth. It has cast a gloom over the entire community.
