Thomas H. Small Obituary
The Lancaster Ledger - Wednesday Morning April 15, 1857

Died on the 4th instant, after a protracted and painful illness, Thomas Small, Sr., aged 76 years. The deceased bore his affliction with Christian submission, ---ing, the reality of that faith in the Christ which he had professes 50 years of his life. He left a numerous family of children, a large circle of friends, and the Church of which he was an official member (to all he was devoutely attached) to mourn his death. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."

Although the deceased was of humble life, nevertheless he was a man of decided character. He was an honest man, a firm friend, and useful citizen in all matters which affected the interest of his country, he was particularly attentive, and his judgement was uncommonly good. In politics he was a Democrat, and conservative in this as he was in all things. He possessed a considerable influence in his neighborhood.

In 1851 when it became necessary to from parties in this state and when the c0-operation party was about being organized, he performed an active and efficient part; with the call for the party in his hand he walked around his neighborhood and returned it with 80 signatures. He was one of the committee of five who prepared the co-operation address to the people of the district, this is given as an eivdence of his zeal and energy, and the just appreciation of a very large protion of the people of Lancaster District. He lived to a good old age and was ready for the harvest.

Married a Carnes.
I know little of Jame Small Carnes or her husband. In the land settlement, shown earlier in this book, of Thomas Small, Sr. deceased. Jane is shown as Jane Carnes. I cannot find her in any known census records of Lancaster County SC.
I have no dates or if she reared a family. I do know the she was Batptized about the same time that many of her brother and sisters and in-laws were at the big revival at Fork Hill. Those baptized there were published in the Carolinas Genealogical Society Bulletin, Volume XVII - Fall 1980. See pages 74, 75, and 76 for the list.

On June 2nd 1860, Stephen T. Small raised funds to erect the original Buford's Monument at the grave site of the Revolutionary Soldiers of a Virginia Company.
In 1861 was the postmaster at Flint Ridge Post office
He moved with his family to Huntsville, Alabama and died there in 1892

That: Thomas H. Small having served faithfully and honorable for the term of six months, from the twenty fourth day of January 1837 until the twenty third day of July 1837 and being honorably discharged from the Army of Texas by disability (by disability written above the line in original copy( is entitled to twelve hundred and eighty acres of Bounty land, for which this is his CERTIFICATE.

And the said Thomas H. Small is entitled to hold said land, or sell, alienate, convey and donate the same, and to exercise al (all rights) of ownership over it.

William Amos and Delila Small later moved to Lancaster Co., SC. William Amos and Delila moved again in their later years, this time to Union Co., NC and both are buried at Union Baptist Church Cem. in Lanes Creek Township, Union Co. NC Delila was the daughter of Rev. Andrew Newton and Mary Susan Blackmon Hinson. (Thus my fathers Grandmothers were both Blackmons)

She was born 1841, and died 1870.
