Thomas was an officer at the naval shipyards in Plymouth, England. After Napoleon's capture at Waterloo he was taken on the "Bilerifow" which went to South Hampton and Plymouth for repairs over which he had charge. He made a cane out of teakwood which was later stolen in Canada. He married Miss Saunders whose family went to Australia (free will) at the time of the discovery of gold.
