The Robert Small that had son James David Small died in Rockingham County, NC, leaving a 1799 will, no probate date. This Robert Small was thought at one time to be the son of John Adam Small and Ruth Stockvale/Stockdale.

Robert Small of Rockingham County, NC was born ca 1746 in Maryland, listed in the 1776 Harford County, Maryland Census as being age 30, Elizabeth age 21, son John 1 year. Also living next residence was brother
John Small age 26.

By January 1778 he was buying land in Orange County, NC. The first deed recorded 21 days after the New Jersey Robert married Elizabeth Morris. This was my first clue that we had the incorrect Robert, in the 1770's he could
not have travelled to North Carolina from New Jersey in that length of time.

The N.C. Robert Small was my 4th great-grandfather. I descend from son James David Small Sr, his son James David Small Jr, his son Nathaniel David Small, his son James Alvis Small. and his daughter Dora Small.

Robert Small, b. abt 1746, d. 1799,migrated to Rockingham County (then Guilford Co. ) about 1778. I am uncertain of his origin but a Robert Small, 30, wife Elizabeth, 21 and son John, 9 mos., were counted in the census of the Susquehannah Hundred, Harford County, MD, taken by Charles Gilbert in 1776. (page 108). Robert Small began accumulating acreage in the Troublesome Creek area of Rockingham County and was a significant landowner
as well as a Lt. in the NC militia. His property was on or adjacent to the Ironworks camp grounds used by Cornwallis and then by Gen. Greene before and after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Many of his descentants still live in the area and my wife's maiden name was Small and is from this family.

Samuel Small, b. abt 1788 was the fifth son of Robert and Elizabeth. He inherited 244 acres on Big Rock House Creek when his father died. No record is found of his marriage but he probably was married about 1811 or 1812. He
sold his property on Big Rock House Creek in 1813. Based on the birthplace of his children it is probable that he moved to Indiana about 1817. He acquired his first land in Knox Co. in 1831 and lived there until his death in 1862.

The children of Samuel Small are:
1. . Abraham, b. 1813 in NC. He married Catherine Burress and they had seven children.
2. Elizabeth Small, b. abt. 1814 in NC. She married a Keasling.
3. Thomas Washington Small, b. 31 Oct 1816 in NC, d. 28 Sep 1879 in DuBoise Co., IN. He married Naomi Boyd in 1847 and they had twelve children.
4. Robert Small, b. 26 Mar 1818 in IN. He married Susan Bond and they had nine children. . From census data their names and approximate year of birth were as follows: Joseph (1841); Samuel (1843); Harrison (1846); Abraham
(1848); R. Columbus (1850); John ( 1852); Elizabeth (1854); Freemont (1857); W. E. (fem)(1859).
5. Samuel Small, b. 26 Mar 1820 in IN. He married Ann Burress and had one child.
6. Polly Ann, b. 1821 in IN. She married Thomas Tade.
7. Nancy A., b. 1829 in IN and married Samuel Melton (Walton?).
8. Archibald, b. 1831.

i.James Nicholas Small, born February 12, 1801 in Rockingham County, North Carolina; died March 30, 1887 in Near Duff, Dubois Co., Indiana; married Margry Lemond August 20, 1821 in Rockingham County, North Carolina.

ii.James David Small, Jr., born March 29, 1804 in Rockingham County, North Carolina; died March 15, 1871 in Rockingham County, North Carolina; married Rachel Miller.

iii.Renee Small.
iv.Minerva Small.
