Generation No. 1

Various sources list her name as Mrs. John Small, or Ann Small, and a woman of that name is found in Quaker records. However, there is no source that confirms that she is the spouse of the earliest person of the surname Small found in Virginia records. It is known that he had a spouse, un-named, and that they had at least 3 known children.

Many also alledge that this family migrated from Deleware or other New England locations and perhaps is related to the Edward Small line found in Maine and Massachusetts, this is utterly false. No record exists that links the Virginia family to that of Edward or John Small of New England.

The Society of Friends was first planted in Virginia on the Eastern Shore and then in the region south of the lower James River which area is penetrated by the Nansemond and Elizabeth Rivers. All the meetings in the counties there are closely related by both ties of blood and organization. The same families which first settled Isle of Wight County, later moved on into Nansemond, and in the period 1660-63 almost every Quaker family sent members to become the first settlers of the state of North Carolina. Wheeler in his "History of North Carolina", says, "The first permanent settlement (i.e. in Perquimans Co.) was formed after the expulsion of the Quakers from Virginia in 1662". So one should not be surprised to find the same family names in all these places.

In 1681 the John Small family was transported to "Nanzemund" (Nansemond) in Virginia by the Parker Brothers, merchants. (No record can be found for this assertion)
The children of this family unit are located several places, and only list these four in Virginia records. There may have been earlier or later ones depending on other records, its likely they had more than these, but no reliable source has been found to establish they had more children.

An entry on LDS page 29,398 indicates a marriage for John Small to Mrs. John Small in 1665 in Nansemond Co., and a birth date of (1644) for Mrs. Small (Mrs. Small is proported to have been named Ann, there is no positive proof of this name.)

Early family record reads as follows:
John Small is found in VA as early as 1683, where on the 10th day of the 4th month he with others witnessed a marriage and signed a marriage certificate. Also on the 17th day of the 2nd month 1688, he witnessed and signed the marriage certificate of Leavin Bufkin and Dorothy Newby. Ann Small also witnessed the marriage and signed.

The first surviving record of a session of the Yearly Meeting is dated 1702, the seventh month. The representatives to this session were: Samuel Newton, Thomas Page, Richard Ratcliff, Isaac Ricks, Edward Thomas, John Bates, John Woodson, Joseph Pleasants, Nathan Newby, John Small, John Porter, William Scott Sr. , Robert Jordan, Henry Wiggs, John Murdor (Murdaugh), John Jordan, Daniel Sanbourne, Charles Fleming, Robert Hughts, Gerrard Robert Ellyson, Joseph Galister, Benjamin Small, James Bates, James Jordan, Matthew Jordan, John Pleasants, Thomas Lankford and Sameul Jordan. Daniel Sanbourne acted as clerk and Sarah Sanburn (Sanbourne) signed papers on behalf of the womens meeting and to signify their unity.

As this first session ends it is ordered that the care and the management of those things above mentioned is left to two friends of every monthly meeting: John Tuck and Sameul Cornwall for Surry, Jordan and Richard Ratcliff for Chuckatuck, John Small and Nathan Newby for Nansemond... and here it is written by the committee appointed to copy the minutes that the record is not further intelligible.......etc.

This record is very likely mention of John's two sons, Matt and Benjamin rather than the elder, but this is not proved or disproved.

"Quaker records prior to this were distroyed by fire. Fragments of the papers were copied, there were also originial books which escaped the fire. The conclusion of this matter is: we accept the year 1672 as the year of the organization of the Virginia Yearly Meeting."
Whether John Small was a member of this congregation at that time is unknown, but for him to be elected a delegate in 1702 would indicate that he had a position within the organization sometime prior to that time.

LDS lists Mrs. John Small's birth as 1644 in Nansemond Co., VA page #29,398.
Ann Grove does not appear in LDS VA records married to John Small, but does appear several times as Mrs. Ann Small. All records list the marriage in Nansemond Va. (See marriage notes)

Ann Small is listed in Chuckatuck as a witness to a marriage, there is no concrete proof that this Ann Small is the wife of John Small. She could have been his daughter, or sister just as easily.

LDS library microfish of Virginia page 29,400 lists the marriage as (1666). Other records show the marriage as being 1660, another in 1665. All indicate the marriage was performed in Nansemond Virginia, he was of Nansmond VA. The record in the LDS library lists his wife as Mrs. Ann Small, does not list her as Ann Grove. Hinshaw Quaker records refer to her as Ann Small , it is unknown if this is her married name or if she was sister or daughter to John Small

1701, Feb 18. Benjamin suffered the seizure of 220 lbs. tobacco for priest's dews & church rates & 220 lbs. 'for your fine by Capt. Havell.'

PAGAN CREEK MO. MTG., established 1737 when the Chuckatuck-Nansemond MM was divided. After 1752 it was known as the Black Water - Surry MM. It incorporated these counties: Nansemond, Surry, Sussex, Prince
George, Didwiddie, Isle of Wight, Amelia, and Southampton. AMONG ITS EARLIEST MEMBERS: PERKINS, BELSON, GROVE Dr. John Grove was a leader in this group. In 1678, Letters mentioning Pagan Creek were sent from Cumberland, England, and among the names mentioned were JOHN SCOTT, and WILLIAM SCOTT. Dr. John Grove's will mentions the meeting house built at Pagan Creek. 11 x Joseph2 SMALL [14901], born 1676 in Nansemond Co., VA.

According to Core Sound Monthly Meeting:
1737,5,-. Benjamin & fam. received on letter from Joseph Newby.
1748,5,5. Benjamin & wife requested certificate to remove elsewhere.

Hinshaw confirms his parents as John and Alce. (short for Allison?) many researchers assume this is mis-spelled and insert Alice. Miles White Quaker records specifically show both Alce and her mother Alce in records, he spells it no other way, and since he was only copying Chuckatuck records, was careful to spell exactly as the records read in his transcription.



Note: Benjamin Small died in Carteret Co., NC leaving a will which was probated in the Carteret Co. March 1752 Court. Benjamin and his family had moved to NC in 1737 presenting a letter to the Core Sound MM in Carteret Co. from Joseph Newby. Benjamin was appointed in 1742 to fence in the church graveyard. His brother, John was asked to "fitt seats and windows for the women's meetings." Benjamin had been granted 100 acres in Carteret Co., located on the west side of Deep Creek Swamp by the Council that met at Wilmington, NC on 25 Sep 1741. Another 200 acres was granted to him on 23 Sep 1742 with another 200 acres on the north side of Newport River granted to him on 25 Sep 1842. At the time the Spanish threatened Beaufort Harbor in 1747/1748, Benjamin and his sons were on the list of men who appeared to defend the town and the harbor. They served for four days.

Benjamin Small's wife was the daughter of John Lovet and they had two sons, Benjamin Small Jr. and Jonas Small.

Robert G. Lewis narrative
"Benjamin Small, William Borden, and Henry Stanton were among the early Quaker settlers in Carteret County. William Borden, who was a shipbuilder, relocated from Newport, Rhode Island, in 1732 or 1733, and settled on Newport River, just west of Harlowe Creek. He established a shipyard on the river, reputedly near the mouth of Mill Creek. The Bordens were founding members of the Quakers' Core Sound Meeting House, which was probably located on the east side of Core Creek. William Borden's son, William Borden II, was one of the largest land owners in Carteret County, with 44,250 acres in 1784. Benjamin Small likely moved to the area from Chowan Precinct in 1737, he and his family being received at the May 1737 monthly meeting of the Core Sound Quakers. In 1739, he purchased land on the west side of Harlowe Creek at the mouth of Alligator Creek from Charles Cogdell."


Sept. 25, 1741 - Benj. Small was granted 100 acres in Carteret County on the W. side of Deep Creek Swamp about 3 Miles N. from Newport River, joining sd. swamp. (Note; Other land patents indicated that the land was near the head of Alligator Creek) (Patent Book 5, #2477, p. 140; CR IV, p. 602)

Sept. 25, 1742 - Benjamin Small patented 200 acres in Carteret County on the N. side of Newport river and W. side of Harlows Creek, joining Ben Small, Samuel Negus and Pacquernett's line. (PB 5, #2435, p. 130)

Mar. 21, 1743 - Jos Small was granted 100 acres in Chowan Co. (CR)

1747-48 - Benj. Small and his son were among the "Men on Duty at Town (Beaufort) and on the Banks, when the Enemy Lay in the Bay and had Taken Several Vessels." (Spanish Alarm)


The 1820 federal census of Carteret County between Core Creek and Newport showed William Bell and his family living between Jesse Hasket (sic) and Joseph Small.

The 1830 census of Harlowe Creek: Joseph Small, 30 - 40, headed one of the households next to William Bell and Burton Hardesty headed the other. Jesse Hasket and Sally Small (60 - 70 year-old mother of Joseph) lived between William Bell and Tamer Bell.

"Benjamin Small born about 1691 or 1692 in Virginia. He died in Carteret County, North Carolina in 1751 or 1752, leaving a will dated 11 Month 30, 1751/2 which was probated in the Carteret County, March 1752 Court. He married first, Mary who probably was Mary Knight. Mary died in 1743 and Benjamin remarried in 1750, reported by Core Sound Monthly Meeting, Miriam Albertson. She remarried at Carteret Meeting House 5 month 11, 1755, Joseph Stanton.

This book also gives more history on Benjamin Small, including his will. His will reports, "I give to my son John Knite Small one feather bed, furneture, 2 cows..." This would support the suggestion that Benjamin's first wife was indeed a Knight, and her father probably John Knight, found in Quaker records.
The book further mentions the children of Benjamin Small and Mary as Sarah, died 1 month 6, 1757, Benjamin, Jonas, John Knight, and Amos. Sarah Small married at Carteret Meetinghouse about 1737, Thomas Jessup, Jr., son of Thomas and Rachel (Pease) Jessup. She was the mother of ten children and died in Guilford Co., 1 month 6, 1757, as recorded in the New Garden Monthly Meeting.

Henry Stanton made affirmation that he saw Benjamin Small decd, sign and instrument of writing as his Last Will and Testament and that he also saw Patience Bull evidence the same and Miriam Small, Executrix therein appointed, qualified as the law directs.

Amos Small petitioned this Court that his brother Benjamin may take the estate of the said Amos into his hands and granted, the said Benjamin giving bond and surety in the sum of thirty pounds proclamation money to deliver up said estate to said Amos or his guardian if he should choose one.

Upon the prayer of John Knight Small, orphan, praying that Amos Small may be appointed his guardian, granted upon giving security agreeable to law.

Upon a second prayer of John Knight Small, this court may pass an order that what estate effects remains in the hands of the the executors of his former guardian may be deliver to Amos Small, his present guardian, and granted for remaning estate be delivered to Amos Small

A deed of sale from Amos Small to William Toulston for seventy five acres of land in Carteret county was proved in open Court by the oath of Lewis Welch, one of the subscribing evidences thereto and ordered to be registered.

Notes for MARY KNIGHT:
Mary died in 1743, leaving Benjamin with young adult children. He remarried in 1750 to Mariam Albertson. Ben then died two years later in 1751 and his Will reads in part, "I give to my son John Knite Small one feather bed, furneture, 2 cows..." This supports the suggestion in LDS records that Benjamin was married to Mary Knight, and her father likely was John Knight, found in Quaker records.

Irene Jessup, and 172 Allied Families, compiled by William Jessup Cleaver:
mentions the children of Benjamin Small and Mary as Sarah, died 1-6-1757, children, Benjamin, Jonas, John Knight, and Amos. Sarah Small married at Carteret Meetinghouse about 1737 Thomas Jessup, Jr. son of Thomas and Rachel (Pease) Jessup. She was the mother of ten children and died in Guilford County 1-6-1757 as recorded in the New Garden Monthly Meeting records.

1750, 1st mo 6th
Monthly meeting met before which Benjamin Small and Meriam Albertson, Henry Stanton, Junior, and Hope Borden laid their intentions of taking each other in marriage. Also a certificate from Cape Fear was read which manifested Friends unity and satisfaction with the visit of our esteemed Friend Silas Carpenter.
He also requests one from us in order to remove to New England in order to a regular preceedings. the meeting appoints Nicholas Bryand and wife, William Hill and his wife to inquire into the conversations and clearness of all other incumberances of marriage of the two couples above named and also into the conversation of our Friend Carpinter and clearness in respect of marriage. No further business the meeting adjourns to meet in course.

1750, 2nd mo 3rd
Monthly meeting met at which the Friends appointed to inuire into Benjamin Small, Meriam Albertson, Henry Stanton, Junior, and Hope Bordens conversations & Clearness of marriage made return that they found nothing to the contrary but that they might be permitted to proceed except Meriam Albertson wants of a certificate from Pasquotank where she belonged which could not be obtained by reason of the distance of way in season. The meeting therefore concluded to adjourn to the 8th instant. Henry Stanton, Junior and Hope Borden is left to their freedom to appoint a time to proceed and William Hill and his wife is appointed to see that their marriage decently carried on according to the good order used amongst Friends.

Monthly meeting held by adjournment from 3rd of 2nd mo to the 8th of the same inclusive. at wit. Benjamin Small and Meriam Albertson appered but had not yet obtaining a certificate. the meeting adjourned to 22 instant.

1750 2nd mo 22nd Monthly meeting met. held by adjournment from the 8th of 2nd mo to 22nd of the same inclusive. at report of Benjamin Small and Meriam Albertson appeared for an answer. She the said Meriam Albertson producing a certificate from the monthly meeting of Friends in Pasquotank acceptable to this meeting. That being the only obstickle they are left to the freedom to proceed in marriage and William hill and his wife are appointed to see the wedding decently carried on according to the good order of Friends.

1750 3rd mo 7th Monthly meeting met at which Friends understand two marriages accomplished between the 3rd of 2nd mo and this instant was carried on an orderly manner except some of the youth taking too great liberty beyond the limit of Friends orderly for which the friend appointed for that purpose reproved them and they decested. Certificates of which is here under recorded.

Whereas Benjamin Small of the Province of North Carolina and County of Carteret and Miriam Albertson of the County of Pasquotank and Province above stated having declared their intention of taking each other in marriage before several publick meetings of the People Called Quakers in and according to the good order used amongst them whose proceeding therein after deliberate consideration thereof with regard unto the Righteous Law of God example of his People recorded in the Holy Scripture of Truth and that case was allowed of by the said meeting nothing appearing to hender their said intention and having consent of all concerned;
Not these are to certify all whom it may concern that for the full accomplishing their said intention this 12th day of the second month in the year according to the English account one Thousand Seven hundred and fifty. They the said Benjamin Small and Miriam Albertson appearing in a Publick Meeting or Assembly of the aforesaid People and others met together at their Publick Meeting House in the County of Carteret and Province aforesaid and in a somumn manner he the said Benjamin Small taking the said Miriam Albertson by the hand and openly declaring as followeth: "Friends I desire you to be my witnesses that I take this my Friend Miriam Albertson to be my wife promising through the Lord's assistance to be to her a faithful and loving husband until it pleases God by Death to separate us", and then and there in the said assembly the said Miriam Albertson did in like manner declare as followeth: "Friends I desire you to be my witnesses that I take this my Friend Benjamin Small to be my husband promising through the Lord's assistance to be to him a faithful and loving wife till it shall please God by Death to separate us." and the said Benjamin Small and Miriam Albertson now Miriam Small s a further confirmation thereof did then and there to these present set their hands and we whoxse names are hereunto subscribed being present amongst others at the sollomnizing of their said marriage and superscription in manner aforesaid as witnesses hereunto have also to these presents subscribed our named the day and year above witnesses.

It therefore cannot be determined exactly who was there to witness the marriage celebration for which couple except for those who were likely siblings. Disposing mind and memory, thanks be

Redding, who bequeathed it in his will, to his son James, he dying intestate, it came to John Redding, his brother, who bequeathed sd land in his will, to his sisters; Rachel Davis, Mary Davis, and CHARITY SMALL, which sd lot did fall to sd wife of sd JOSHUA.

Children of this individual are not proved to be brothers, however, LDS IGI lists the marriage of both to Nancy Jones, and apparently Joshua may have died, John married his widow? Not Proved.
