Woerrstadt was the earlier Schmahl hometown. A later generation of our ancestral line moved to nearby Essenheim, which is a small village about seven miles southwest of Mainz on the Rhine.

Stefan Mossel, who lives in Essenheim, says the village's population is 3,000, and that there are still 70 Schmahls living there [source: Phyllis Grein]. A contributor to the Schmahl story in Pennsylvania history in years past has confused the village of Essenheim with the large northern city of Essen, on the Ruhr River, (current population 500,000). Stephan has provided us with information which corrects the old history entry, showing the difference between Essen and Essenheim. This photo is of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Essenheim. All Schmahls in Essenheim were baptized in this church. The tower was built in the 15th century. The other parts are 17th century.

The above two paragraphs are extracted from the Schmahl / Small family website located at: http://home.nycap.rr.com/smallfamily/schmahl.htm

Source Information for Essenheim and Woerrstadt is provided by Stefan Mossel of Essenheim Germany

Additional Notes:
There are three more Schmahl-families from Essenheim who went to Pennsylvania during the 1740s:
Johann Adam Schmahl, a single man, in 1741

Generation No. 3

3. LORENTZ3 SCHMAHL (LORENTZ2, NICLAUS1)1 was born Bef. Dec 26, 1614 in Woerrstadt, Rheinland-pfalz, Germany1, and died Jan 30, 1697/98 in Essenheim, Germany1. He married ELIZABETH SCHNORR2 Abt. 1644, daughter of KILIAN SCHNORR and ANNA. She was born Bef. Jul 31, 1625 in Essenheim, Mainz-pfalz, Germany2.

Notes for LORENTZ SCHMAHL:

Lorentz Schmahl was born 8/3/1614. Lorentz died 1/1698 at the age of 84. His body was interned on 1/30/1698. The birth date is not confirmed.

The little town of Essenheim, in the duchy of Hessen, Germany, lies at the confluence of the rivers Main and Rhine. The surrounding region is noted for its vinyards, which annually produce large quantities of such wines as Nierstein, Oppernheim, etc. The city of Maintz lies two hours distant by train.

From Essenheim came Lorentz Schmahl, the founder of the Small family of York, Pennsylvania. In a roster of the inhabitants of Essenheim in 1624 the name of Schmahl does not appear, but in 1646 Lorentz and Elizabeth Schmahl, (grandparents of the emigrant Lorentz Schmahl), presented a child for baptism. This baptism, duly entered in the books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Essenheim, Germany, gives the earliest record of the family which has yet been found. No effort has been made to trace the name beyond Essenheim.

From the records of the church at Essenheim has been gathered considerable information of interest to the Small family. The search has been carefully made, and the abstracts are guaranteed under the signature of the present pastor and under the seal of the Lutheran Church.

Lorentz Schmahl appears to have settled in Essenheim as a young man, (Moved to Essenheim (1646? at age 32); shortly after his marriage. For many years, from this time on, the name appears more or less frequently on the records. It has now, however, almost entirely disappeared from the neighborhood.

The Essenheim records show that Lorentz Schmahl died aged eighty-four (84) years and was buried on January 30, 1698. There is no record of the death of his wife, Elizabeth ----. Lorentz and his wife Elizabeth were the parents of six (6) children, all of whom were baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Essenheim, Germany.

PRIMARY SOURCES AND FACTS CONCERNING ADAM SMALL

Compiled by Bruce Wiland ([email protected])

1. From "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Ralph Strassburger and William Hinke, Volume I of 2 volumes, 1934, reprinted 1966.

This book contains three kinds of ship lists: 1) the captains' list, marked A, 2) the signers of the oath of allegiance, marked B, and 3) the signers of the oath of abjuration, marked C. The captains' list was prepared by the captain, and he spelled the names as he thought they were spelled. The signers' list were spelled by the signer except where the signer could not write. In these cases, a clerk spelled the names, and the signer made his mark which is shown in parenthesis in the lists. The authors of this book are critical of the sloppy work of Daniel Rupp who had prepared the "... Thirty Thousand Names ..." book years earlier. They mention many mistakes and omissions made by Rupp. I will show the info from Rupp's book later, but I would say that the information in the Strassburger/Hinke book should take precedent over that of Rupp. I will give the names as they are spelled in the book for each list. Please keep in mind that each person will appear three times, once in each list (A, B, C as defined above).

This is the book that contains many errors. You can see how it compares to the lists above. Rupp's book contains only one list for each ship, a combination of lists A, B, and C above. He also rearranged the names on the list so that you could not tell which name had followed which in the original.

* Lorentz Schmahl is footnoted as follows: "Lorentz Schmahl, a native of the Middle Palatinate, settled as a farmer six miles from York, Pa., where he pursued assiduously and successfully his calling to the close of his life, leaving four sons: Jacob, who, when young, moved to Baltimore, whose son, Col. Jacob Small was Mayor of the city; John Schmahl moved to and settled in Beaver County; Kilian and Lawrence remained in York. From the former, the greater part of the numerous Smalls in York County descend. - Rupp's History of York County, p.743."

3. From "Emigrants from the Palatinate to the American Colonies in the 18th Century" by Dr. Friedrich Krebs, 1953.

This is from research by the Archivist at Speyer, Germany into certain church records in Germany. Other sources are also given. S-H refers to Strassborg andHenke's book Pennsylvania German Pioneers. PHSL refers to the Publications of the Huguenot Society of London, vol. XXIV, Naturalizations of Foreign Protestants in the American Colonies Pursusant to Statute 13 George II. c.7, edited by M.S. SCHMAHL, ______. The son of Johann Adam Schmahl, went to America from Essenheim, 1741.

SCHMAHL, Henrich. Of Essenheim. The record states: "May have left again for the American countries: Henrich Schmahl, street-player, with wife and 6 children (1746).

SCHMAHL, Johann Adam, Son of Michael Schmahl. Married at Essenheim, 28.IV.1716, Anna Maria, daughter of Cilian Schnorr. Issue (born at Essenheim): (1) Johann Adam, bap. 22.V.1718; (2) Wentz, bap. 19.I.1727. To America with wife and 2 sons, 3 June 1743. Adam Schmahl arrived on the ship Loyal Judith, 2 Sept. 1743 (S-H I, 335,337,338). An Adam Schmaal, of Germany Twp., York Co., took the sacrament, 19 Sept. 1762 (PHSL XXIV, 84).

SCHMAHL, Lorentz. Son of Lorentz Schmahl. Married at Essenheim, 27.I.1728, Eva, daughter of Henrich Ueber. Issue (born at Essenheim): (1) Johann Adam, bap. 13.II.1729; (2) Eva, bap. 16.XII.1731; (3) Killian, bap. 7.X.1735; (4) Lorentz, b. 16.I.1739; (5) Magdalena, b. 24.XI.1741. To America with his wife and 5 children, 3 June 1743. Lorentz Schmal arrived on the Loyal Judith, 2 Sept. 1743 (S-H I, 335, 337, 338). Killian Small, of York Twp., York Co., Pa., was naturalized in 1765 (PHSL XXIV, 141). Killian Small, of

York Borough, made his will 17 Sept. 1807 (proved 10 Oct. 1815); he named his children Jacob, John, George, Michael, Joseph, Peter, and Henry (GSP York, 531).

Note: It is strange that the Johann Adam, bap.22.V.1718 (age 25 in 1743), son of Johann Adam Schmahl and brother to Wentz, does not show up in the immigration records/ship list for the Loyal Judith of 02 Sep 1743 when his father and brother do. Could he have died on the voyage or not made the voyage? We have not yet seen any further reference to Wentz beyond that in the ship lists.

6. From "Genealogical Data Relating to the German Settlers of Pennsylvania" by Edward W. Hocker

This book contains advertisements frin various German newspapers in Pennsylvania that may help in genealogical research. Info that had no genealogical importance was omitted in the book. Therefore, if no info is given following the name, it generally means that the ad concerned something like stray cattle.

June 16, 1750 - Anna Elisabeth, widow of Lorentz Loch, from Braunholder, Zweibruerken, arrived in this country last autumn and lives at North Wales (Gwynedd Twp, Mongomery Co) with Nicolaus Schmell. She seeks brother, John Adam Schmell, from Cassell, who has been in America 14 years.

Nov 1, 1750 - Adam Schmell, Falckner Swamp (Montgomery Co)

Note: Falckner Swamp was located in the vicinity of New Hanover Twp. My guess is that Nicolaus was also a brother to John Adam or was the father of Anna Elisabeth and John Adam. These Nicolaus and John Adam mentioned above are most probably the Schmall/Shmells that arrived 03 Sep 1739 on the Loyal Judith.

8. From History of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Warner, Beers, & Co., 1887, p. 893.

"Jacob R. Small, farmer, P.O. Mont Alto, is the great grandson of Adam Small, whose wife was Magdalina Cook, daughter of John Adam and Mary (Harmony) Cook. The families of Cook and Small were among the pioneers, who came to this county at an early period of this country's history, and after locating here became quite extensive land holders and reared families, whose descendants are now reseidents of this county and township. The sons of Adam Small were Henry, Peter, John, Daniel, Jacob, and George, all of whom settled in this county and reared families. Henry Small, the grandsire of Jacob R., had seven sons: Adam, John, Henry, George C., Lazarus B., Benjamin c. and Ephraim J. John Small, subject's father, was born in February, 1808; his wife, nee Rebecca Knepper, July 16, 1827."

Note: This passage confuses things because Jacob R. Small is the great grandson of Adam Small JR, and we are fairly certain that Elizabeth Earhart was Adam Small Jr's wife. Therefore, we have assumed that Magdalina Cook was actually the wife of Adam Small Sr. However, other possibilities exist. Magdalina could have been a second wife of either Adam Jr or Adam Sr or this passage may be in error and she is not a wife of either one. Confirmation of the marriage of Magdalina Cook would go a long way toward solving the mystery concerning the Adam Small line. This book is the only place (so far) that the name of Magdalina Cook has been seen associated with Adam Small.

Genealogy & Personal History of the Alleghany Valley by John W. Jordan:

Lorentz Schmahl of York, PA, who was born June 10 1708, in Essenheim Germany (where his ancestors had lived for many generations), and emigrated to America with his family in 1743. He died in 1749. Wife Eva Ubert, dau. of Heinrich Ueber.

Emmigrants from the Palatinate to the Amer. Colonies, Penna German Society by Friedrich Krebs

He left Germany 2 Jun 1743. He arrived on the ship Loyal Judith, 2 Sep 1743.(Ships list from Rupp's Thirty Thousand Immigrants, Sep. 2, 1743.

Foreigners imported in the ship Loyal Judith, James Cowie, Master, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes). Schmahl. Lorentz. Son of Lorentz Schmahl. Married at Essenheim,

Germany, 27 Jan 1728 (may be Mar), Eva dau. of Henrich Ueber. Lorentz Schmahl came to Amer. with his wife and 5 children (1)Johann Adam, Bapt. 13.II.1729, (2) Eva., Bapt. 16.Xii.1731 (3) Killian, Bapt. 7.X.1735, (4) Lorentz, Born 16.I.1739 (5)Magdalena, born 24.XI.1741.

This family line has so far been traced back to Niklaus Schmahl (married to Otillia Wolf) in Woerrstadt (southwest of Essenheim) in the middle 1500's. York County, Pennsylvania history tells us the earliest immigrant to America from this line was Lorentz Schmahl, born in Essenheim in 1708. With his wife, Eva Euber, and five children, he arrived at Philadelphia on June 3, 1743 on the "Loyal Judith." He settled just west of the Susquehanna River, six miles southeast of York, in Windsor Township. As time passed, the first few generations moved into Adams, Cumberland and Franklin counties in southern Pennsylvania, and also Beaver County in western Pennsylvania. Five generations later, the first Small who moved from Franklin County, PA to Ellsworth County, Kansas in 1879, was John Vantreese Small (the author's great-grandfather), his wife, Anna Mary Keller, and their children.

Hi Jim,

I spent this morning in the Genealogy Library at the Texas State Archives. I was suprised at how many books they have on Pennsylvania. Anyway, I am going to quote information from several sources. You will see that some of the information floating around from various secondary sources has been misquoted, misread, or miscopied from the original source. You will also see that there appears to be five different Adam Smalls that emigrated to America. Sorting them out is the difficult part. I can't figure out where the Smalls from Berkeley Co Virginia fit in unless their Adam is a son of the Adam that immigrated in 1741. I have not seen any descendants for the Adam/Nicholas Schmalls (#1 below) that arrived in 1739 and seem to have settled in Montgomery Co PA. I also have not seen any descendants for the Adam/Adam/Wentz Schmahls (#4 and #5 below) that seemed to have settled in York County. The five Adam Smalls I have identified are as follows:

1. Johan Adam Schmall that immigrated in 1739 with Nicholas Schmall (brother? or father?)

2. Johan Adam Schmahl that immigrated in 1741 alone

3. Adam Schmal (age 14) that immigrated in 1743 with father Lorentz, mother Eva, and 4 siblings

4. Adam Schmahl (age 50) that immigrated in 1743 with wife Anna Maria and sons Johan Adam (b.1718) and Wentz (b.1727)

5. Johan Adam Schmahl (b.1718) that immigrated in 1743 with father Adam, mother Anna Maria, and brother Wentz

The information from the primary sources follows:

1. From "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Ralph Strassburger and William Hinke,

Volume I of 2 volumes, 1934, reprinted 1966.

This book contains three kinds of ship lists: 1) the captains' list, marked

A, 2) the signers of the oath of allegiance, marked B, and 3) the signers of the oath of abjuration, marked C. I will show the info from Rupp's book later, but

I would say that the information in the Strassburger/Hinke book should take precedent over that of Rupp. I will give the names as they are spelled in the book for each list. Please keep in mind that each person will appear three times, once in each list (A, B, C as defined above).

2. From "A Collection of Upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French, and Other Immigrants in Pennsylvania" by Prof. I. Daniel Rupp.

This is the book that contains many errors. You can see how it compares to the lists above. Rupp's book contains only one list for each ship, a combination of lists A, B, and C above. He also rearranged the names on the list so that you could not tell which name had followed which in the original.
