George Martin Noll was the oldest son of Godlip and Elizabeth Noll, being born Sept. 27, 1825 on his fathers farm in Berkeley County, Va. (Now home of Clarence Martin located on Arden-Nollville Road)
He died on Nov. 30, 1903 at his home in Nollville. George married Barbara Ellen Small on Nov. 18, 1849. She was the daughter of John M. and Elizabeth Kilmer Small, and was born Nov. 27, 1827. Barbara died March 7, 1889 and is buried along with husband George in Green Hill Cemetery in Martinsburg, WV.
After their marriage his father Godlip moved them to the Wright farm, where they farmed as tenants until the farm was willed to him after his fathers death. In the 1850 census in the household was
Solomn Hess a hired hand, and two slaves that help work the farm. When the Civil War came along George already had five children, so he did not enlist in either Army. I'm sure he suffered pilferage from both sides as all farmers did during this time. In 1880 census there lived a Jennie Ridenour listed as a servant living in his household.
George following his father's moral teachings and was a kind and generous man. Perhaps to generous! Which contributed to his financial down fall in the 1890's. He seem to want to help anyone he could and when money became tight in the nineties. A lot of the notes he made and the ones he co-signed were called in. Unable to cover them in cash, he had to put his farm into trust to insure the debts. His nephew, Allen Noll a lawyer was the trustee. The farm was sold to Dr. S. N. Myers for $12,062.71, this came up $683.32 short of his debts.
Also in this trust was a farm of 119 acres his wife had inherited from her father. At one time George and Barbara had owned 419 acres in Gerrardstown and Hedgesville Districts. After he lost his farm George
moved to a house in Nollville he had purchased and lived there with daughter Annie until his death.
Dr. Myers bought the farm to start an Apple Orchard and started the American Fruit Growers Association. Which is now. The George Orr and Sons Orchard.
