College (Uni St Andrew's) 1707; MA 1710 (described as 'minus potens' ie son
of minor landowner); divinity student 1710-9; keeper in Uni library 1718-20;
uni clerk 1718; licensed by St Andrew's Presbytery 1720.

The names of two witnesses are given. Of the father, it is on record that the Revrend James Small was licensed by the Presbytery of St. Andrews on April 20, 1720, and called to Carmyllie on July 20, 1720. He died on January 3, 1771, in the fifty-first year of his ministry.
In addition to his son William, who was the youngest of the four children, the minister of Carmylloie had two other sons, Robert and James, and a daughter Anna. Robert became minister of Cross Church, Dundee, and was Moderator in 1791 of the General assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Dr. William Small, born 13 October 1734, was the son of the Rev.
James Small (c.1692-1771) and Lillias Scott (c.1700-1775). Rev. James
Small and Lillias Scott were married in 1723 in England. Their other
children were James Small (b. 1730); Robert (b. 1732); and Anna (b.1733,
died in infancy).

Friend of Priestly, Erasmus Darwin, James Watt and member of the Lunar Society
in Birmingham from 1765-1775, which met on the Monday closest to full moon to
dine & discuss scientific issues. The Society fell apart after his death.
Unmarried. Educated Marischal College, Aberdeen.
1758-64, Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at the College of
William & Mary in Virginia, USA. Thomas Jefferson was a pupil. Returned to
England in 1764. Medical partnership with Dr John Ash in 1765 in Birminingham.

stone. Named after Will Thornton g-father, Will Thornton shipmaster [uncle?]
& Will Small physician [g-uncle]. No record of death in NSW or Qld BDM.
