Genealogy of John and Ann Grove Small
Descendants of John and Ann Grove Small
By Jim Small
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 SMALL was born Abt. 1605 in Devonshire, England. He married ANN GROVE 1636 in Salem, Essex Co., MA. She was born 1616 in England.
Note: There is a tradition that this John is the brother of Edward b. 1600. No proof has been found to link
these two as brothers, but the proximity of each in the same location would suggest some relationship could be possible There is
also a Joseph b. ca. 1627 who could be an offspring of John but it is not proved.
Due to a lack of proof of genealogy between this first John, who married Ann Grove, and records in Virginia
which state John and wife "Ann", it has not been proved that this individual is the same one. The age of this John appears to be a generation earlier than the John who appears in VA records.
For this John to be the one who is alleged to have come from RI and transported by the Parker Brothers - Merchants is not proved. The notation in VA records does not state where John of Va was transported from. In addition, if this were the case, this genealogy would appear in Virginia records, not in Massachusetts. This family obviously did not go there. A separate Genealogy of John and Ann of Nansemond has been made, and no link between them and this family is suggested

1. John1 SMALL [13832], born abt 1605 in England He married abt 1636
in Salem, Essex, MA Ann GROVE? [13833], born 1616 in England.
Notes for John SMALL
p. 108, Vol. IV, "Geneal. Dict. of New England" by James Savage Perhaps the John Small who was at Salem
by 1643. Had come as a servant of Edmund Batter, malster of Salisbury, in Co. Wilts., Apr. 1635, in the James of
London, from Southampton. Arrived at Boston 3 June 1635. Perhaps had Stephen and Benjamin. He was troubled in 1658
for a Quaker, but soon was permitted to go to R.I.
Note: concerning this reference
The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy by William Wade Hinshaw, and Early Quakers of Virginia by Miles White Jr. are the only sources known to exist
concerning Quaker genealogies. No records in Vol. 6 for the Small family suggest any connection to New England Smalls.
John Small, the servant, arrived in Boston in 1635, for him to be a servant his birth is likely a minimum
of 10, or born ca. 1625, it is also possible he could have been older.
Savage does not indicate this John is the one who went to RI or that he was Quaker.
(Descandants of Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick of Salem, Massachusetts p. 75 -
In March 1658, Josiah Southwick, John Small, and John Burton were arrested for being Quakers, at Dedham, Mass.,
while on their way to Rhode Island to provide homes for themselves and families and to escape from the intolerant
persecutions of the Puritans. They were released and resumed their journey.
--Felt's Annals of Salem, Vol. 2, p. 581. )
p. 417, "Pioneers of MA" by Charles Henry Pope. Says he was a proprietor at Salem, 1642. First a servant
to Edmund Batter. Is it possible the John who was a servant and likely served for 7 years, then could have been a proprietor, Then going to RI? With the number of individuals who had the given name of John, it is extremely unlikely that these references refer to the same individual.

His wife Ruth appointed to be administratrix of estate.
Petition dated Salem, Mar. 25, 1676, of Ruth Small (her mark); JOHN SMALL (his mark); Edward Grove, John Putnam
and John Buxton. Says that Ruth, having taken advice of her father Small, her uncle Grove, her brother John Buxton,
and Mr. John Putnam - that the court give her liberty to bring up her four children, to continue with her until
they become of age...son William, when of age to get 1/2 of the farm that is undisposed of. Daughters Lidia, Hanna
and Ann, when they come of age, to have 40li each; that her father [actually father-in-law], John Small, her uncle
Edward Grove; her brother John Buxton, and Mr. John Putnam be overseers.
Allowed in Salem court 30:9:1676. (Essex Co. Quarterly Court Files, vol. 24, leaf 120.)
The reference above [actally father-in-law] does not appear in the Probate Record, it is an additon by
some researcher to attempt to clarify. The above record conflicts with the record below. Two marriages?

JOHN SMALL, at Salem 1643. He had come from England as a servant of Edmund Batter, malster, of Salisbury, in County
Wilts, Apr. 1635, in the "James of London" from Southampton, arriving at Boston 3 June. Possible sons
Stephen and Benjamin (Benjamin remained in New England).
John was troubled in 1658 for being a Quaker, but soon was permitted to go to R.I.
The above statement clearly links the Servant John and the Quaker John. This is not proved.

SMALL
"The Smalls were intimately connected with the earliest history of Maine and New Hampshire. They were of English
blood, and brought with them the traditions of a valiant ancestry. In the year 1330, John and William Small, of
Dartmouth, were flatteringly mentioned in an act under Edward III, and some of their descendants seemed to have
resided there continuously to this day. There were also records in 1682 of Smalls in Gloucestershire, England,
who claimed to be of the same origin as the Smalleys of Leicestershire. In the early York deeds we find that the
name has been spelled Smale, Small, and Smalley--these different spellings having been used by the same men. It
is not to be wondered at that some branches of this family have adopted the form Smalley.
(I) Edward Small, who came to America about 1632, was probably from Dartmouth, or some other point in Devonshire,
England, where the family has long been one of high character and position. He is said to have come under the auspices
of his kinsman, Sir Ferdinando Gorges. He, with Champernown and others, founded Piscataqua, which was afterwards
divided into the Maine towns of Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick, and Berwick. Edward Small was at the first general
court at Saco in 1640, also member of the grand jury the same year. His name was entered on the list as "Edward
Small, gent." We find him at old Falmouth, Maine, in 1640; a magistrate there in 1645; and that afterwards
he was at the Isle of Shoals. He was one of the magistrates of the general court held at Saco,
Octover 21, 1645. He seems to have built a house in Piscataqua before 1643, as the grant of one hundred acres made
to him July 25, 1643, by Thomas Gorges, deputy governor of the Province of Maine (in behalf of Sir Ferdinando Gorges
Kt. Ld., proprietor of said province) was specified as "lying between two crickes of each side of the house
of the said Edward Small, and so backward to Sturgeon Crick," five shillings yearly being payment for the
same. Five years later, June 23, 1647, Edward Small sold this tract of land and "my dwelling house field"
to Antipus Maverick, for forty-five pounds.
No mention of wife or children is found in any deed or record. The last mention we find of him is in the Isle of
Shoals, in 1653. He probably returned to England."

Stephen Small Notes:
LDS IGI Marriage and Brith index, MA p.72,773 lists marriage date as 5-19-1683. This has to be an error,
the birth dates of children indicate a marriage date much earlier. Another entry gives the correct date as 12-25-1676,
a third date listing a relative, Daniel Tyler lists the marriage as 2-25-1676.
