Dear Jim, My 2 ggrandmother Margaret Small was born in Ohio ca 1817 and died in Montgomery Co Ohio in 1857. She married William Schenck on 30 November 1837 in Montgomery Co. Ohio.

I need help identifying her parents.

On the 1820 Montgomery Co. Ohio census, the following Smalls were listed. Andrew Small Sr. and his sons Andrew, Daniel, James, John and also there was a Nicholas Small.

I have some history on the Andrew Small Sr. line. Some info came from their family Bible which is quoted in "A Genealogical Index of Miami Valley Ohio Pioneers" by Lindsay Brien 1970

He was born in Scotland 17 Feb 1756.( "Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files" says York Co. Pa. ??) He emigrated to Pa. in 1768. He enlisted from Cumberland Co. served in the Pa. line under Col. Richard Montgomery. In 1795, he and his family moved to Warren Co. Ohio area, then Montgomery Co Ohio., and finally Miami Co. Ohio. He died 1 March 1840 in Miami Co. He was married in 1785 to Margaret Long dob 1765 in Pa. -dod 12 April 1823 Warren Co. Ohio

My preliminary work directs me to Daniel Small as being the father of my 2ggrandmother Margaret.-- There is no proof just some coincidences and some guesswork.

Does any Small researcher have knowledge of southwestern Ohio Small families? Thanks for any help. Mary Hummell

History of The Life

Of

Andrew Small

Andrew Small was born in Scotland on. Feb. 17, 1756, of Scotch Presbyterian parentage. He, with his brother James, came to the United States, and settled in Hanover Township, near Harrisburg ,Pa., where they remained until the Revolutionary War broke out, when Andrew enlisted under General Richard Montgomery, he being just 18 years of age , at the time. He served all through the war, being in some of the worst engagements, was with Montgomery when he scaled the heights of Abraham, at Quebec, on December 31, 1775 and was with Washington at Valley Forge during the awful winter when Washingtons army had so little" to eat, and less to wear. It is said that Andrew Small often told how, during that siege at Vallev Forge, he had taken the leather from his boots and cooked it in various ways that he might have sufficient nourishment to keep the body together.

After the close of the war, Mr. Small and his family decided to go West, and in 1795 they packed their belongings in wagons, and the start was made for the West. When they reached Bedford Fort, which is now Pittsburgh, Pa., the horses were sold and the family embarked with their belongings, on a flat boat bound down the Ohio River. The river at the time was very low, and the men folk had to tow the boat until they were part of the way, when the river began to rise, caused by some heavey rains up the valley, and the river became such a torrent

that it nearly capsized their boat and made landing very difficult; but finally they succeeded in making a landing at Columbia near Cincinnati. It was told that when the landing was made, Mr. Small called the entire group of folks together and prayer was held, using a large white log as an alter. Here it was that thanks were given unto God for his safe keeping them during their journey, and asking his continued guidance and safe keeping as they traversed this strange land.

After a years rest, under the protection of Fort Washington, Mr. Small and his family started up the Great Miami river, following a surveying party that had blazed a trail along this river, using the rude cabins for the shelter of his family, that these survyors had abandoned, until they reached Clear Creek, in Franklin Township, Warren County, where Mr. Small settled upon a section of land.

Mr. Small cultivated this section of land for several years until he took up school teaching he being the first school teacher in Warren County.

Mrs. Small, his wife , not being a very robust woman, it fell to the lot of the children to work the farm, with such help as could be secured, which consisted of two men who were paid the sum of twelve and one-half cents each day.

God blessed this home with six girls and three boys, Mary, Catherine, Agnes, Susannah, Jane, Elizabeth, Daniel, Andrew, and John.

The clothing for these boys and girls were made from homespun, and the shoes from dear skins, and it is told that they wore out their shoes so fast, that sometimes it was impossible to keep them all shod, and upon one occasion, the son James, rather than stay in the house, went out during the winter and slid on the ice in his bare feet.

Andrew Small lived to the age of 84 years, passing from this life to the great beyond, on March 1st 1840. He was buried beside his beloved wife, in the cemetery in Piqua, located on Wood Street, between Wayne and Downing Streets, where they rested until that cemetery was condemmed, when their remains were removed to the beautiful Forrest Hill Cemetery, at Piqua, Ohio, where they now rest.

Notes for MARY SMALL:

Article from 1886 newspaper on her 100th birthday gives her birth, harriage to Sameul, childrens names and births as well as historical information on her parents and siblings.

A Genealogical Index of Miami Valley Pioneers, Ohuio by Lindsay Brien lists her name as Catherine. Cemetery inscriptions, bible records and other documents do not list middle names for her or any of her siblings so it is not likely her name was Mary Catherine.

Book, publish date, and Author unknown

John Small, retired famer, Sec 23; P. O. Piqua; was born in Warren Co., Ohio, June 16, 1801, and is a son of Andrew Small, who was born in Scotland Feb 17, 1756, where he spend his boyhood days in the Scotch school, and, at the age of 12 years, came with his parents to Pennsylvania, where they located in 1868; there they lived and died; and Andrew, about 1785, in Pennsylvania, married Margaret Long, who was a native of that state, born about 1765 and died in Warren Co. April 12, 1823, and he died March 1, 1840. They had nine children, of whom three are yet living; the oldest sister, who now lives on the old home farm in Warren Co., Ohio, at an advanced age; one brother in Shelby co., Ohio, also quite old, and John, who came to this county in 1833, and settled in the woods, on a part of what is now known as the Madison Millhouse farm, and a part of what is today known as the James Patterson farm. this he improved from its wild condition to a good degree of cultivation; in 1855, he sold it and bought his present farm of 80 acres where he has since resided. Mr. Small has in his life been a remarkable hunter of deer, and such other kinds of game as might be found in the regions where he traversed. The first inducement for him to go to some hunting-point was to regain his health, which he did through the advice of his family physician; he was to drink the blood of the deer, and since that period, which as been a number of years, he has taken a hunt each autumn until the last two; sometimes to the mountains of this state and several times to Minnesota; even now, though nearly fourscore years of age, he takes a walk of four or five miles, with his gun, every suitable day, and enjoys good eyesight and health.

His marriage with Miss Margaret K. Betson, was celebrated in Montgomery Co., Ohio, on Sept. 26, 1822; she was born in New Jersey Nov. 13, 1801, and when but about 11 months old, her parents came to Ohio; they were both natives of New Jersey; the father was born in 1779, and died at the age of 68; the mother was born about 1785 and died at the age of 73. Mr. Small and wife have had ten children, viz, John B. born Aug 9, 1823, died 1827; Andrew L., born July 28, 1825, died Dec. 4, 1875; Martha A., born Dec 1, 1827; Daniel P., Dec 3, 1829, died Oct. 17, 1868; David B., born Nov. 3, 1832; James T., Jan 4, 1836; Francis M., Oct 26, 1838; John Betson, Jan 9, 1841, died June 26, 1879; Mary M. born Sept 23, 1845; Lewis C., Jan 13, 1848. Jan 1, 1880, about 10 a.m. on looking through their window, they beheld, with utter surprise, carriages, buggies, etc. almost at their door, which conveyances were loaded with their children, relatives, friends and neighbors from far and near, each one coming with their basket well filled with rich and luscious eatables, and soon a table was erected, on which were placed the contents of the baskets, and about the proper hour for refreshment the table was surrounded. Mr. and Mrs. Small have trod the happy pathway of married life for nearly three-score years, and are now living a retired life in their quiet home, which is partly occupied by David B., their son, who, on May 13, 1859 married Ellen Conklin. May they live and see many more happy days together is the wish of the writer.

ernoon, a humble successor to the beloved leader who so long

presided over the meetings of The Ohio State Archaeological and

Historical Society. It is not for us to express sorrow that our

friend has left us, but rather to express gratitude to the Omnipo-

tent God for having given our friend so long a life among us.

I am going to ask our Secretary to read to you a set of resolu-

tions drawn in memory of Governor James E. Campbell.

Mr. Galbreath then read the following:

JAMES EDWIN CAMPBELL

IN MEMORIAM

WHEREAS, It has pleased Divine Providence to call to his

final rest our President, co-worker and friend, Honorable James

E. Campbell, formerly governor of Ohio, and

WHEREAS, The members and friends of Governor Camp-

bell, who are assembled in this annual meeting and who recall

his genial presence, his happy remarks and the grace with which

he presided one year ago and on former occasions, must mingle

with pleasing recollections the poignant regret that he cannot

be with us still, and

WHEREAS, This Society holds in grateful memory his as-

sociation as a life member and his service as President for six

years, and

WHEREAS, This service was continuously active and to the

last moment of his life indicated his unfailing interest in the

work of the Society, therefore

Be it resolved by the Ohio State Archaological and His-

torical Society, That in the death of Honorable James E. Camp-

bell the Society has lost its most distinguished member, the state

an honored and patriotic servant and Columbus, the capital city

in which his later years were spent, its best known and most

loved citizen. The association of his name with the Society

was a valuable asset. It invited the friendly interest of other

men eminent in the public service and brought many of their

names to the list of life members. In the meetings of the So-

ciety and the Board of Trustees over which he presided, he was

a harmonizing and constructive influence. His kindly considera-

tion of all matters coming before the Board of Trustees and the

annual meetings and his broadly tolerant views enabled him to

harmonize conflicting interests and turn their united strength

to the service of the Society. His contributions to the QUARTERLY

were not numerous but of a uniformly high order. In the Octo-

ber issue will appear his monograph entitled "Sumner-Brooks-

Burlingame or The Last of the Great Challenges." This is a

contribution to the history of Ohio and the Nation. Some of

his recent addresses have been published since his death. Among

these was his last paper before the Kit-Kat Club, entitled, "When

and How Ohio Became a State," which concluded with the pa-

triotic tribute -- the final public expression of his love for the

star that represents Ohio, his native state, in the national con-

stellation and his infinitely greater love for the flag, which repre-

sents "the majesty, the dignity, the power and the glory of this

great Republic." If "to live in hearts we leave behind is not to

die," assuredly Governor James E. Campbell, whom we are proud

to remember as an associate and friend, is a living influence still

in the memory of all who knew him. For him, life had no win-

ter and age was only the Indian summer time.

Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to

the surviving members of his family as a testimonial of our re-

spect, our sympathy in their bereavement and our congratula-

tions upon the pride that must mingle with their sorrow in the

reflection that --

"His life was gentle, and the elements

So mixed in him that Nature might stand up

And say to all the world, This was a man."

The resolutions were unanimously adopted, the en-

tire audience standing with bowed heads in tribute to

the memory of Governor Campbell.

Gary and Mary Hummell" <[email protected]

Ohio

. They had the following children:

1) Catherine

2) Mary- dob 20 March 1786 Juniata Co. Pa. m. 1806 to Samuel Campbell

3) Daniel

4) Agnes m James Moore

5) Andrew dob 15 July 1794 -dod 26 Aug. 1852

6) Susannah dob 23 May 1796

7) James

8) John dob 16 June 1801 dod 1891 Miami Co. Ohio m. Margaret Betson in 1822

9) Elizabeth

My preliminary work directs me to Daniel Small as being the father of my 2ggrandmother Margaret.-- There is no proof just some coincidences and some guesswork.

Does any Small researcher have knowledge of southwestern Ohio Small families? Thanks for any help. Mary Hummell

I have no siblings for Margaret. The only documented proof I have for her is

the 1837 marriage and her appearence on the 1850 Warren Co. Ohio census Page

She and Wiliam Schenck were the parents of Sarah Schenck Wertz dob 1838 and

Rachel Schenck Willis dob 1839. Mary Hummell

Obituary

Piqua Daily Call, Piqua Ohio 6/17/1911

Veteran of Civil War

David B. Small dies at his home on the Loy Pike of Paralysis

In January 1909 David B. Small a well known farmer of Miami County was stricken with paralysis. He recovered partially, but was never again able to articulate with distinctness, and it was hard to understand his speech, Mr. Small lived an invalid until last Friday when a second stroke of paralysis caused his death at half past nine o'clock in the evening, at his home on the Loy Pike.

Mr. Small was born in Montgomery county and came to Miami county when but a child. He had been engaged in farming ever since, except during the Civil War. Mr. Small served throughout the war as a member of the 147th O. V. I, (Ohio Voluntary Infantry) returning at its close. He was a faithful member of Alexander Mitchel post G. A. R. for many years.

He is survived by four children, J. T. Small, T. W. Small, Mrs. Frank DeWeese, and Mrs. Oren Esty, all of Miami county. Also by two brothers and one sister, They are L. C. Small, of Piqua; Mrs Mary Wynans of Piqua; and Mr. James T. Small of Scanmon Kansas. The Small family is one of the old pioneer famlies of this section of Ohio, and Mr. David Small was one of its highly respected members.

Mr. Small was a member of the Baptist Church of this city, but owing to the absence from the city of the pastor, Rev. F. B. Neel, the Rev Ferguson of the Troy Baptist Church will officiate at the funeral services which will be held at the Small home on the Loy pike at two o'clock Sunday afternoon. Interment at Forest Hill cemetery. Mr. Smalls wife died in June 1907.
