COUNTY CENSUS RECORDS
Census records from individual counties in Kentucky Census records were not required by law until sometime after 1800. Individual counties did however, do some census taking, but not all did. The first record of a county census was in 1792, and was for the counties of Mason and Montgomery only. Others may exist but have not yet been found or documented.

THE SMALL FAMILY OF KENTUCKY
Kentucky County was formed from Fincastle County, Virginia in 1776, with the county seat at Harrodsburg. (Hennings
Statutes, Vol. 9, page 257)
In 1780, Kentucky County was split into three counties, Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln.
Lincoln county occupied the territory South of the Green River and covered the complete southern portion of the
state. In 1786 Madison County was formed from Lincoln and occupied the southeastern portion of the state. In 1792
Logan County was formed and its eastern boundary was roughly the east lines of the present day Warren and Allen
Counties. Cumberland and Pulaski Counties were formed in 1799 from Green County. Wayne County was formed in 1801
from Cumberland and Pulaski Counties, Ref. Kentucky Ancestors, Vol. 1 No. 1, 7-1965

Research of the John and Margaret Small line from Albemarle Co., VA lists children of John as Matthew, and Henry. Henry is alleged to have died shortly after the Revolution. Matthew has sons John, Thomas, William and Henry. John, the father died in Patrick Co., VA in 1791, Matthew and sons appear in Green River Grants in Cumberland County, which became Wayne Co. in 1800. It is likely the four named in the Green River Grants are descendants of John and Margaret Small, sons of Matthew and Jane Henderson.
