SUDDEN DEATH
On Sunday evening last Mr L H Sunderland, of Stanley Flat, died suddenly. He had been in Clare during the afternoon, accompanied by his wife, and had spoken to a number of people, seemingly being in his usual good health. He left to drive home with his wife and complained about feeling unwell. After they reached home Mrs Sunderland got out of the vehicle and went into the house to get a light, and on returning found that her husband had collapsed, and he died shortly afterwards. Mr Sunderland had lived in the Clare district for many years, carrying on business as a fruitgrower, and was well known. Much sympathy has been expressed with the bereaved widow. The remains were interred at the Sevenhills College cemetery on Monday. The Rev Father McCarthy S J., conducted the burial ceremony, and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs McDonald and Edwards.

Harriet Elizabeth sister to William Golding must have emigrated from Tasmania at some stage as I have found her death entry in the Vic. records. She died at Diamond Creek Victoria in 1923, certificate No. 1322.

Also William Golding and Janie Twyford's youngest son Sydney Golding was born at Footscray Vic. 1894 certificate No. 20701and died at the age of 14 years in 1908 at Maidstone Victoria certificate No. 10351.

I am tracking the death dates of the parents of Harriet and William Golding, i.e. William George (you refer to him as William 3rd) and Maria Ann Honey. You haven't got these dates so I am thinking they may have come over to Vic. and brought the kids with them. It is possible that they died in Victoria. My sister definitely found William 3rd had George as his second given name.

Can you or Stephen help me with one of your entries? That is the Unknown Paterson born 18 Feb 1849, Spring Bay Tasmania to William 3rd an Maria Ann honey. Was this a twin the Harriet Elizabeth who was born the same day to the same parents?

It is great to see your web pages. I was thrilled to find out more
about my family's history. I can fill in a gap for you.

Montague Paterson (Charles Henry Montague Paterson), son of Albert
Sydney, was my grandfather's father. He died in Yea, Victoria
Australia in 1970, aged 88. At some stage he went to England and
married Edith Mays. They had at least 2 children: Lily and Charles
Albert. Charles Albert Paterson was born in 1914 on a ship on the
way to Australia. He married Ruth Esther Thiele in Melbourne Vic, (I
have a book about the Thiele family of Doncaster (vic, Australia)).

Hello Steve
I have the passenger list you need and they were Assisted Immigrants who
came to Australia under the Family Colonisation Loan Society scheme run
by Caroline Chisholm. They paid half the fare of Twenty-seven pounds
ten shillings and the Society paid Thirty-five pounds towards their
passage.

ARCHIVES OFFICE OF N.S.W. FICHE No. 839
"Hanover" arrived Sydney 22nd September 1854: Commander W. Henry

DURANCE
Matthew T 27 Cork Cutter
Martha A 24 Dressmaker
Thomas Edwin 4

The pages (all on 1 fiche) are from the original register and really
well preserved. There's no information about the voyage at all but I'm
sure there'd be some sort of writeup in the Sydney Morning Herald of the
arrival and brief summary.

If you go to NSW State records page http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/
and click on 'Services' and then on 'enquiry and copying services'
there are some addresses e.g. Society of Aust Genealogists who would
copy and post the fiche printout to you for a small fee and also find
the arrival entry of "Hanover" in the Sydney Morning Herald. Might be
worth emailing the archives also as you can buy the fiche very cheaply.

ARCHIVES OFFICE OF N.S.W. FICHE No. 839: Immigration: "Members of the
Family Colonisation Loan Society 1852-57".

Mine was $6.00 10yrs ago and I'm sure the Archives would get you a
copy....That'd work out cheaper as they could post it over and you could
have it printed out there. My husbands family came out under the same
scheme in 1855 and are on the same fiche. Of course then I got
sidetracked in finding out about the Society and its inception. See if
your library has a book on Caroline Chisholm....what a woman! It's a
good read.

If you fail to get a copy of the passenger list please let me know.

Kind Regards
Carol Coomber

THE RE-UNION OF FAMILIES-
The above society, (which is of a purely benevolent character, and has
for it's committee in England, Lord Ashley, M.P., the Right Hon. Vernon
Smith, M.P., and other gentlemen of rank and influence), not only
endeavors to aid struggling families and individuals of approved
character in their emigration from Europe, but has for one of it's
objects the re-union of separated members of families.
Persons, therefore, in Port Phillip, who wish to get out to this
country, from England, Ireland or Scotland, their sons or daughters,
fathers or mothers, brothers or sisters, or other near relatives; or
husbands who have been necessitated to leave their wives and children
behind, and may be now anxious to get them out, are informed that they
and their relatives at home will be aided and advised by this society in
their mutual exertions to be re-united.

This re-union may be carried out as followed:
The present cost for each adult is 12 pounds, from England to Port
Phillip- for children under 14 years - 6 pounds each, being reckoned
equal to half an adult:
Loans of 4 pounds, or 5 pounds, or 6 pounds, on satisfactory reference,
and according to circumstances, will be given to each adult for two
years, without interest, parties themselves paying the difference in the
first instance, viz. 8 pounds, or 7 pounds or 6 pounds each: a relative
in this country may advance the amount, or may jointly with his relation
at home make up the sum required.
To show the working of the plan- let us suppose a father in Melbourne
wishes to send for his son at home, that the son can raise 3 pounds
towards his own passage, that the father sends him 5 pounds and the
society sends him 4 pounds, making 12 pounds, or that a son out here
sends for both parents - passage 24 pounds- say the parents at home can
raise 6 pounds, that the son advances 8 pounds and the society lends
him 10 pounds: or again, that a husband sends home for his wife and two
children, one being
above the age of 14, the other under passage of the three, 30 pounds.
Say that the wife can pay 8 pounds at home, that the husband remits her
10 pounds, and the society in this case gives a loan of 12 pounds, thus
their passage is secured.
Much, however, as to the money arrangement, will depend upon the
circumstances of individuals. Last month, one worthy son sent home for
his mother and two adult brothers. He calculated they could pay nothing
towards their passage; he therefore remitted by means by the society 19
pounds 4s, the society lending them 16 pounds 16s., making 36 pounds,
the amount of their passage.
Again, a single person here with small means, may be anxious to get out
several relatives at home who have no funds of their own. In cases like
this the society recommended that the strongest and most serviceable
portion of the family should emigrate first and help the others over.
A servant girl, last month, aged 12, sent home through the society 4
pounds for her mothers support, and now intends to pay in 7 pounds for
the passage of her brother, aged 22, the society lending him 5 pounds,
that by their joint labor and savings, they may help over their mother
and three sisters; and this good daughter and affectionate sister will
be able to do this, with the aid of the society's loan, in about 18
months from the time of her brother's arrival.
It is, however, desirable that the party at home should if practicable,
pay half or so of the sum required to be raised at first, say 3 pounds,
thus by the relative here advancing 4 pounds and the society lending 5
pounds, a person will be enabled to emigrate, and pay afterwards at the
easy rate of 4s 2d. a month, or not quite 1s a week, one being allowed
two years to pay back to the society the loan granted.
Whenever the loans are refunded, the same will be lent again, and if the
borrowers wish it, to others of their relations.

The payment, Remittances, and Emigration of parties are thus arranged:-
whenever payment is made to the agent or secretary of the society at
Melbourne, he grants to the party a numbered receipt for the amount,
enters it in the " Depositor's Book" kept in his office, and pays the
money into the Bank of Australasia, that firm remitting such payments in
a gross sum nto the bankers, Messrs. Coutts and Co., of London, the
latter house having agreed to receive, and the other to remit all
payments made by immigrants
in Australia, for the emigration of relations, or their support at home,
free of any charges !-a boon, on the part of those two Establishments,
of no ordinary nature.
It will also be satisfactory for parties interested to know what Mr
M'Arthur, manager of the Australasia Bank, has considerately offered,
when he transmits the peoples money in a draft to Messrs. Coutts and
Co., to forward at the same time the Agents, " Letter of Advice" to the
committee in London, together with his descriptive roll, in duplicate,
showing the names and address of persons in Port Phillip who have made
the payments, as well as the names, address, &c., of these at home, for
whom the money is sent.

On receipt of this roll, the Society's agent in London, writes to
individuals that such sums are received for them from their friends in
Australia, and lodged in Coutts' Bank for their emigration. If, however,
the parties for whom the money is intended do not wish to emigrate, or
any of them should die in the mean time, then the whole of the money-
(for the money will all the time kept in the bank)- will be returned by
the society to the persons in Australia who has remitted it; unless they
state, in the first instance, that they wish, in such an event, the
money to be given to other relations.

The society also undertakes, through the liberal accommodation of the
banks above mentioned, to forward any small sums of money which
immigrants wish to send to their relatives at home for their support, to
see it transmitted or paid to them, and, in due time, to return to them
their relatives' receipts for the amount.
In this way, a servant girl may send two shillings a week to her aged
parent. Payments may be made weekly or monthly. The committee in London,
arrange for the passage of the emigrants, gives to each family an
enclosed cabin, and one to every six single females, and ample
provisions are provided for them. The emigrants will have the free use
of the poop-deck, and no spirits will be allowed to be sold on board,
though a supply will be in store in case of need.
Those persons at the Gold Diggings who wish to get relations out, need
not to come purposely down to Melbourne to effect this, as some have
proposed. They can easily meet with respectable parties at the diggings,
who can engage to give them orders upon houses in Melbourne. Persons
must bear in mind that the committee in England will be unable to grant
passages until the whole of the money required for such is lodged in the
bank, as the finance committee must enter into an agreement to pay for
such passages when the ship is chartered. Parties should also recollect
that these loans are at present sums of money obtained from the
benevolent public in England, as a donation or a gift in aid the
industrious classes in their emigration. These loans, therefore, are
required to be repaid to the society, that the sums so refunded may be
lent again to others.
Those individuals who have already been assisted with loans, and thereby
enabled to emigrate to Port Phillip, by the 'Slains Castle' and
'Blundell', can pay the loans granted to them according to their
agreement with the society in England, to the agent or secretary of the
said society at Melbourne, who is duly authorized to receive such, and
to transmit the amount to the society.
Applicants in the interior are requested to give their names, age,
address, occupation, whether married, or single, reference, &c. and the
names of their relatives at home, with full particulars.

For further information apply to Captain Chisholm, Melbourne, if by
letter, post paid.

By the books kept in this office, it appears that 28 parents, 38
brothers and sisters, 13 children left behind, and 3 wives, have thus
either been sent for by relatives here, or weekly or monthly payments
are now being made for their emigration from the 10th of Oct 1851 - till
present.

The 73rd. Regiment of Foot was originally the 2nd. Battalion 42nd. (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot It was embodied at Perth in 1780, and landed in India under Colonel Norman Macleod in January 1781. The Regiment fought in a number of campaigns in southern India against Haidar Ali, and his son, Tipu Sultan. In particular, it held out against overwhelming forces at Mangalore in 1783 and did not evacuate until January 1784. In 1786 it became a separate corps, numbered the 73rd. Highland Regiment of Foot, and the facings on the uniform were altered from blue to dark green. It fought against Tipu in 1790-91 and took part in the battle of Seringapatam in May 1799. Prior to this engagement it had seen service against the Dutch in Ceylon, and the Polygars on the Malabar coast. The regiment finally left India in September 1805 after twenty-four years' continuous service in the East.

Macquarie was promoted to the lieutenant-colonelcy of the 73rd Regiment by the Duke of York in 1805. The regiment returned to Britain in 1806 but Macquarie did not join it until 1807. During the period of Macquarie's command up to 1809 there was only one battalion of the regiment, but when this was sent to New South Wales a second battalion was formed (in December 1808) and it served in Spain during the Peninsular War against the French, and later fought at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. The 2nd. Battalion was disbanded at Chelmsford in May 1817.

The 1st. Battalion of the 73rd Regiment landed in Sydney on 1 January 1810 and took over duties from the New South Wales Corps (102nd. Regiment). It was thus the first of many British line regiments that garrisoned New South Wales for the next sixty years. When the 1st. Battalion serving in New South Wales completed its tour of duty in 1814 it was ordered to Ceylon, where it remained until 1821. The members of the headquarters and flank companies became the first British soldiers to travel via New Guinea, New Britain, and the Moluccas. In 1881 the regiment reverted to its old position as 2nd. Battalion of the 42nd. (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch).

The battle honours on the regimental colours of the 73rd now include the place names: Mangalore, Seringapatam, and Waterloo.

The other week I was browsing through some records within the Museum Services
here in Duns when I came across a copy of the Coldstream irregular marriage
records 1793 to 1797 (only very partially indexed).

Almost immediately though one entry sprang out at me and the curator very
kindly agreed to bring across the original for me from Coldstream - normally
the records are only accessible when the museum at Coldstream is open during
the summer months

At any event the record in question is the marriage of John Campbell and Mary
Blackadder. The entry simply records-

''24 January 1797 John Campbell of Dunse and Mary Blackadder of Edrom Parish'

One can only conjecture as to why they chose to enter into an irregular
marriage at Coldstream - most but by no means all of the entries are either
by couples from England or cross Border marriages.

Whether the marriage might have been frowned upon either by the parents of
one or both parties or by the Church or whether it was merely a passing fad
or fancy we can perhaps only surmise.

On the face of things though there seems no reason why they might have opted
for this form of marriage - both were of marriageable age and the first child
would not appear to have been born until ten months later.

There are also a number of other Cossar marriages which I can across viz;

17th. July 1794 James Cossar and Margaret Ray both of the Parish of
Chillingham
23rd. May 1796 Alexr. Cossar and Eleanor Craig both of the Parish of
Westruther
9th. August 1797 George Cossar and Mary Waddle both of the Parish of
Chatton

Incidentally I also came across another entry in the Baillie records of
Dunse which I am
transcribing re the Cosar - butchers in Dunse - I'm afraid they again seem to
have some financial difficulties

"30th. November 1754

Which day James Cosar junior butcher in Dunse has enacted and hereby enacts
himself as cautioner and Seurety in the town Court Books of Dunse that Walter
Cosar butcher in Dunse shall answer the complaint at the instance of Thomas
Bryce butcher in Dunse against the said Walter Cosar and make payment of what
soume or soumes of mony shall be descerned upon by the Baillie And I Bind and
Oblige me for relief of my Caut. As accords
