UPDATES / NOTES

03 November 2009 - 8851 Veterans  -  Mr. Oswald sent me a file of updates soon after the 2008 update.  While I was eliminating duplicates, I grabbed more obituaries from the Wooster Daily Record archives.  And then collected more hits on the amazing National WWII Memorial.  And then -- I realized that I'd never get this update to the web if I didn't pick a stopping point.  My continued thanks to Mr. Oswald and the other veteran relatives who Emailed corrections and additions.

23 February 2008 - 7648 Veterans  -  Almost all of these new entries came from the Wooster Daily Record obituaries.  The National WWII Memorial website was very helpful in removing the "unknown" from many military service entries. Two items of note: [1] a single obituary sent in by Jeanette Schmalzbauer ties William H. Hanson to eleven other Civil War vets [Thanks, Jeanette!], and [2] my own father is now listed among those remembered here.  Somehow, that never crossed my mind when I started this project.

22 April 2006 - 7383 Veterans  -  A couple dozen corrections and additions from family members were integrated into the list.  But the majority of new entries came directly from the Wooster Daily Record and Akron Beacon Journal obituaries, as large numbers of WWII veterans continue to depart this mortal coil.  I hope we thanked them sufficiently for what they did for us.

9 January 2005 - 7199 Veterans  -  A slew of corrections graciously snail-mailed to be by Joseph Lackman of Apple Creek, OH.  [Thanks, Joe!]  Other updates from the Wooster Daily Record and other readers.

I wrote a computer program to automate the generation of the thousands of files at this site, and -- like Microsoft -- I probably haven't found all the bugs.  So please let me know if anything looks awry.

1 November 2003 - 6945 Veterans
  -  Massive upgrade! The original Table of Contents was purposely made to mimic that of the hardcopy book -- the updated TOC is better suited to the added capability of the Internet version. The shortcut/arrow buttons have been upgraded and added to the tops and bottoms of every page (but the home page). And given problems I've had with the Tomsnet site, I've created a mirror site at RootsWeb.

Cemeteries and veterans attibuted to Killbuck Township have now been assigned to Wooster Township.

I used the capabilities of the United States Geological Survey and TopoZone.com to try and locate each of the cemeteries within Wayne County. That information has been used to augment the list of cemeteries, to help determine alternate names for each cemetery, and to generate high-resolution maps for each township.

Unfortunately for me, mapping of each cemetery made me realize that the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery is NOT in Wayne County, but rather is in Medina! [that's what I get for going by zip codes!] That removed 419 veterans from our rolls. [If someone is working on the Medina County vets, I will gladly give you this data.]

The good news is that we more than made up for the loss of the Medina vets. Working in conjunction with Wayne Lowery of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) Ohio Grave Registration Site and Susie Holderfield of the 120th Ohio Infantry site, I have added over 530 missing Civil War veterans to the list, as well as filling in some holes in their data. And Janet Welty and the Wooster-Wayne NSDAR site helped me clean up nearly all of the Revolutionary War vets.

I will continue to compare my information with that of Wayne, Susie, and other genealogical sources. [ANCESTRY.COM and The Ohio GenWeb Project are favorite stops!] But I live in Manassas, VA and are unable to visit the Wayne County Library or any of the graveyards personally. Therefore, I am dependent upon -- and in debt to -- local ancestors and researchers to keep me apprised of any errors and omissions.

1 September 2002 - 6702 Veterans  - Since I first put Mr. Oswald's book online, I have received dozens of Emails from ancestors, friends, and family members which have helped me to correct erroneous information and fill in some blanks. In addition, I have been downloading obituaries from the online version of the Akron Beacon Journal and the Wooster Daily Record. At this point, there are nearly 6700 veterans listed in these rolls, many with links to additional information.

Betty Thompson Leonard went through every record, identifying obvious errors in dates of birth and death. I am very much in her debt.

27 January 2002 - 6371 Veterans

15 July 2001  - I searched a couple Vietnam Veteran Wall sites (most importantly, The Wall) for additional information on service and/or "Wall" notations. That data has been linked to the appropriate veterans with source URLs included.

24 March 2001

7 August 2000

1 February 1999 - (c) 6200 Veterans

12 March 1997 - (c) 6100 Veterans  - We go online!
