WEST SALEM - Engel “Bud” Smit Jr., 79, of West Salem, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Smithville-Western Care Center, Wooster.

Memorial graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the West Salem Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are being handled by Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem.

He was born June 10, 1924, in Wooster to Engel Sr. and Mary (Stockman) Smit.

He graduated from Wooster High School in 1941 and attended Ohio State University until enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He was decorated as a 2nd Lieutenant. He flew P-51 fighter combat missions in Europe post War.

He operated a photo studio in Wooster and was a civilian flight instructor in Medina prior to joining the Air National Guard in Mansfield as a captain, later working as an air traffic controller in Oberlin until his retirement in 1975.

He was a member of James Stevenson American Legion Post 499 of West Salem.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Engel III and Maureen Smit of Oberlin and Robert Smit of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Linda Cutlip of Ashland and Rebecca Cover of West Salem; three step-grandchildren and a sister, Mildred Ewing of Cambridge.

His wife, Thelma, died in 1992 and a sister, Louise (Smit) Browne, also died previously.
