WEST SALEM -- Carl W. "Bud" Whitcomb, 81, of West Salem, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Regency Hospital of Akron.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 6, at 11 a.m. at the Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, with Pastor Robert Holmes officiating. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by James Stevenson American Legion Post 499 of West Salem.

Friends may call Thursday, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to James Stevenson American Legion Post 499, in care of Paul Eicher, 13306 Congress Road, West Salem 44287.

He was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Wellington, to Roy and Adah (Sprinkle) Whitcomb.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was engaged in farming then he started driving truck for Norwalk Truck Line and then Consolidated Freight in Richfield, where he retired.

He was a member of James Stevenson American Legion Post 499 of West Salem, Teamster Local 24, National Rifle Association, and USS LSM-LSMR Association.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Vickie Shadley of West Salem; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean (Ernie) Hartman of Wellington; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Donna Rolland of Ashland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Lillian Whitcomb in 2002, and a son, Joseph K. Shadley and three sisters, Florence Finkel, Margaret Heister and Merry June Thompson.
