WOOSTER -- Anthony "Tony" Hawthorne, 88, of Wooster, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at Akron City Hospital, after a brief illness.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Church of the Cross United Methodist Church in Wooster, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Shaw and the Rev. Bud Olszewski officiating. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Cross UMC, 5100 Cleveland Road, Wooster; or Wooster-Madisonburg Evening Lions Club, in care of Eugene Taylor, 2739 Heyl Road, Wooster 44691.

Anthony was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Cleveland to Anthony and Bertha (Beckt) Hawthorne and married Pauline Kline on June 14, 1947. She survives.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945-46 and in 1950, graduated from Akron University.

He was a physicist for the B.F. Goodrich Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1981, and had made his home in the Stow area for 31 years, moving to Wooster in 1996.

He was a former member of Grace United Church of Christ in Akron, where he was church treasurer, consistory president, elder, usher and Sunday school officer. He was a member of Church of the Cross United Methodist Church in Wooster.

He had been active in Boy Scouts, Stow Loins Club, Wooster Evening Lions Club, Men's Garden Club and the Investment Club, both in Stow.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline, whom he married June 14, 1947; three sons, whom he was very proud of, David (Sarah) of West Salem, Dennis of Akron and Dale of Rocky River.

His parents, brothers Earl and Harold and a sister, Ruth Baker, died previously.
