Hello Silver Cousins,
My name is Clarence “Til” Tillery, and I am a Silver descendant through my mother, Ada Lou Silver.
This is an explanation as to why I am writing this newsletter. I have been involved with this Kona Silver reunion on and off since the early 1980’s. Because I am a Silver family member, I feel a sincere need to keep the reunion, newsletter, and our Silver data materials maintained until we can become fully reestablished. I was involved with John Silver in publishing the original Silver newsletter and maintained the reunion genealogical table for a number of years, filling in for John Silver as he battled his cancer. In addition, I have continued to maintain his Silver family genealogical records since his death.
The Southern Silver Family Organization has incurred a number of setbacks in recent years:
First, there was the death on 20 June 2008, of my first cousin, James “John” D. Silver, who was the main Genealogist and Silver Family Historian for many years. John and I began working on our Silver data base in the early 1990’s. I had assembled a data base of about 4,500 names. I gave John my work and he proceeded to expand it to 45,000 plus names. John developed a series of ninety-three Silver Family books for the different branches of the Silver Family beginning primarily with Georg Wendel (George Silver, Sr.) Silber (1731-1785). He also accumulated a vast amount of genealogical material which is now in my care. His work in recording and documenting the Silver Family is beyond and above any value that might be put on it.
Next, there was the loss on 9 Oct 2009 of John Silver Harris, Editor and Publisher of this newsletter. John was a Silver Family Genealogist and publisher of many books on the Silver Family. Upon the death of John Silver, he volunteered to continue the publication of this newsletter. His editorial and publishing knowledge are being sorely missed.
Lastly, the family lost Laura Cowan Cooper on 21 Jan 2010. Laura was the driving force behind the Kona Silver Family Reunion. She assumed responsibility for the reunion after the death of the reunion founder, Wayne Silver, on 6 Jun 2001. She organized, orchestrated and managed this reunion from providing delicious breakfast gravy biscuits to hauling out the trash. Laura was a first-class genealogist in her own right and was the coordinator of the Silver Family DNA project among her many other involvements.
With the blessings of a number of Silver family members, I have retrieved all the vast amount of genealogical materials which John Silver accumulated over the years and have this information in my care. I have begun a process of organizing, scanning, recording and documenting the data for future Silver family use. Please note that I emphasize family use. When John Silver and I were preparing this information, we agreed that it was not to be used for personal gain or profit but only to benefit the family. I intend to maintain that agreement as long as the material is in my care.
With all the above having been said and since no one qualified and responsible has stepped up, I feel that the publication of the newsletter should continue on a limited basis and I have volunteered to try my hand as editor and publisher on a temporary basis. I plan to publish the newsletter on a limited quarterly basis unless reader demand or data acquisition makes a monthly publication necessary.

According to our custom, the Silver Family Reunion was held on the 4th Saturday of July (24 July, 2010). The Trustee of Kona Missionary Baptist Church did not open the church this year due to the unsafe environment of the facility (lack of plumbing, electrical equipment failure, bats in the attic, etc.) and lack of property and liability insurance on the property. The reunion was moved two miles away to the Community Center in Bandana, NC on NC Highway 80.
Jere Howell, my wife Amy Tillery, and I organized this year’s reunion so as to maintain the function. It was very exciting and well attended. During this one-day meeting brunch was provided, a business session was conducted, volunteers recruited, books and cd’s were sold in support of the old church and a genealogical table provided allowing access to our computer data base and assistance with the ninety-three John Silver genealogical books.
It was discussed, voted on, and approved to continue the Silver Family Reunion as a one-day event on the 4th Saturday of July each year at the Community Center in Bandana, NC so long as the Kona Missionary Baptist Church is unsafe and unavailable.
This is a call for your Silver and related families group sheets and pedigree charts that will be added to the family data base. Also, please send any family stories, articles and family history that you would like to have published. I will provide a printed descendant chart for each person who provides new data for our data base.
Please forward all OBITUARIES since they are very important to family history.
In addition, I would be glad to assist in how to obtain membership in The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) from ancestor George Silver, Jr.

HARRY G. SILVER

NEWS RECORD & SENTINEL
Published 3-17-2010
MARSHALL – Harry G. Silver, 88, died on March 9, 2010 at the Brian Center in Weaverville following an extended illness.
Harry was born in the Bandana community of Mitchell County on December 19, 1921, and was the oldest son of the late Fred Silver and Edna Jarrett Silver. He was the beloved husband for 58 years of the late Gail Grubbs Silver who died in August of 2007.
Harry spent his formative years on his family’s farm in Bandana. An early interest in agriculture and working with people motivated him to enter North Carolina State College (now NC State University) with the goal of becoming a county agent. After one year at NC State, he interrupted his education to serve his country during World War II. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the US Army. The majority of this time was spent in the military police guarding German prisoners of war on both American and foreign soils. Harry always took great pride in the fact that he and his four siblings served America during war time.
After being discharged from the Army, he returned to NC State and earned his bachelor’s degree in Agronomy. He moved to Madison County in 1949 and began his employment with North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. He worked in the extension service from 1949 – 1970 in Madison and Swain Counties. He was responsible for developing many county programs which increased farm income and provided more jobs for local people. The trellised tomato industry in Madison County was developed under Harry’s leadership and brought in over one million dollars annually to Madison farmers. In 1970, Harry returned to NC State and earned his master’s degree. He was inducted into the Honor Society of Agriculture. After earning his master’s, he was promoted to TVA Supervisor for Western North Carolina where he worked until his retirement in 1978.
Under his leadership, many new county programs in shrubbery production were initiated for many of the mountain counties. In 1993, Harry’s distinguished career was recognized by his induction into the WNC Agricultural Hall of Fame.
Following his retirement, Harry devoted his time to his wife, daughter, extended family members, friends, church, and hobbies. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Marshall, where he served as deacon and assistant Sunday School teacher. He continued his membership in the Marshall Lions Club. He enjoyed making his annual fishing trip to Canada with his friends, going to Raleigh to watch NC State play football, traveling with Gail and Edna Ann, watching sports on TV, and reading. Harry had a wonderful sense of humor and was the “wind beneath the wings” of his family.
Harry is survived by his only daughter, Edna Ann Silver Lindsay and her husband, Raeford Lindsay of Weaverville. two sisters, Nina Turbyfill of Bakersville and Bobbie Stack of Pensacola, FL, and two brothers, Guy Silver and his wife, Joanne of Bakersville and Ted Silver and wife, Eleanor of Garner.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Friday in the Chapel of Madison Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Stephen Loftis officiating. Interment followed in the Silver Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Mitchell County.
