The Family of Nicholas and Mary Sixberry
First Generation
1. Nicolaas SAXBERRY-138was born Abt 1690.
Nicolaas married (MRIN:7) Merry /Maria-87 at about 1710. Merry was born at about 1690.
Nicolaas SAXBERRY was probably born at about 1690. Nicolaas married Merry (Maritje/Maria) at about 1710, based on the assumption that Evert, their first child was born at about 1715. Merry was probably also born at about 1690.
The theory is that Nicholas Sixberry was the father of Evert, William, Maria, Nicholas, Abraham, and probably several other children, based on an in depth study of the known documentation such as christening and marriage records, coupled with other evidence such as naming patterns and general place locations of each family group, etc.
Nicolaas and Merry had the following children:
2 M i. Evert (SIXBY-SIXBERRY) SIKSBY-6was born Abt 1715 in , , NY. He died c. 1774 in , New Scotland, Albany Co., NY.
His date of birth is an assumption based on the date of his marriage, the date of birth for his wife Elsje, and the date of birth of his first child, Marytje.
Evert married (MRIN:6) Elsje Von Egmont Seeger EGMONT-71 at about 1737. Elsje was born Jan 1718 in , Albany Co., NY. She was christened 28 Jan 1718 in DRC, Albany, NY. She was the daughter of Jacob and Anna Lansing Egmont.
On October 22, 1738, the first known record bearing Evert and Elsje Egmont Seskby's names was for the christening of their daughter, Marytje (Maria or Mary), recorded at the Dutch Reformed Church in Albany.
The names of the witnesses to the christening were Willem and Marrytje Seskby. William and Marrytje's names had also never appeared in a church record at the Dutch Reformed Church in Albany prior to this date.
Evert's first daughter was named Maria, and his first son was named Nicholas (first daughter named for the maternal grandmother, first son named for the paternal grandfather).
It was originally believed that the witnesses, William and Marrytje (Maria) Seskby, were the children of Manassah and Pietertje Jonckers Sixberry, but by 1838 Manassah and Pietertje's children were all living well to the west of Schenectady and were at least 40 to 50 miles away from Evert and Elsje Seskby, further, that family had never had a church event take place at the Albany Dutch Church, and likewise, the Evert Seskby family never had a church event take place in Schenectady.
It was also originally believed by many researchers that Evert was a son of Manassah and Pietertje Jonckers Sixberry. Manassah and Pietertje also had a son named William and a daughter named Maria. There may be a relationship between the two families, but none has been shown by facts or documentation to this date.
There is evidence that there was another William other than Manasseh's son, William, with the marriage record of a William (Billy) Sixberry to Annatje Redliffe in which the bride and groom were referred to as young people from the Colony. For this reason it is believed that Evert and Elsje were also residing at the Colony. The lack of church records prior to the christening of Evert and Elsje's daughter, Maria, is further evidence leading to that conclusion. William, the son of Manassah and Pietertje Jonckers Sixberry was then about 40 years old, was married to Maria Catherine Smith and had at least 5 children, and therefore is ruled out as the groom in the marriage to Annatje Radliffe. The conclusion is that this William and Marrytje (Maria) Seskby, were not children of Manassah's by the same name, but rather siblings to Evert Seskby.
Evert and Elsje Seskby named their first son Nicholas. The christening was recorded on July 18, 1744 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Albany the witnesses to this christening were Nicholas Seskby and Maria Hogil.
It is believed that the witness, Nicholas Seskby, was the son of Nicholas and Merry. This Nicholas, christened in 1722, was approximately 22 years old, and as yet unmarried at the time of Evert's son, Nicholas', baptism. Maria Hogil the other witness , was the sister of Elsje. It seems unusual that Edward Hogil, the husband of Maria was not selected as a sponsor to this baptism, therefore it becomes apparent that these witnesses were chosen because Nicholas was the brother to Evert and Maria the sister to Elsje.
3 M ii. William Billy SIXBERRY-135was born at about 1717, and died on or about January 19, 1740 in Albany Co., NY.
William married (MRIN:25) Annaatje RADLIFFE/RADCLIFFE-37 on December 9, 1737 in the Dutch Reformed Church, Albany, NY. Annaatje was born Abt 1718. She died on or about April 24, 1741 in Albany County, NY. She was buried in the Dutch Reformed Church burial ground, Albany, NY. She was the daughter of Johannes and Celia Yates Radliffe.
Billy and Annaatje's first (and only) child was named Nicholas. His christening was recorded at the Dutch Reformed Church in Albany on December 19, 1739. Nicholas died on or about 1 Apr 1740 in Albany County, NY
4 F iii. Maria SEKSBY-121 was born Abt 1720.
On Oct 22, 1738, with William Seksby sponsored the christening of Maritje, dau of Evert and Elsje Egmont Siksby.
On May 2, 1756, with Edward Hogg, Maritje Siksbey sponsored the christening of Evert, the son of Evert and Elsje Siksby.
Nothing further has been learned about Maria.
5 M iv. Nicholas SAXBERRY-27 was born at about 1722 in Albany County,NY. He was christened on June 10, 1722 in the Dutch Reformed Church, Albany, NY. He died on February 17, 1808 in , Schenectady Co., NY.
Nicholas married (MRIN:17) Susanna CLEMENT-2320 Mar 1756 in DRC, Schenectady, NY. Susanna was born on September 23, 1726 in Schenectady, NY. She was christened on October 2, 1726 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Schenectady, NY. She died on March 6, 1807 in Schenectady Co., NY. She was the daughter of Pieter and Anna Vedder Clement.
On June 10, 1722 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Albany, Nicolaes, the son of Nicolaas and Merry Saxburry was christened. The witnesses were Isack and Jannetie Lansingh. This was the first "Sixberry" event to be recorded in the Albany Dutch Church records. All church events pertaining to the Manassah Sixberry family were found at the Schenectady Dutch Reformed Church.
The baptism of Nicolaes is the only known church event that clearly indicates the existence of Nicolaas and Merry Saxburry as a family group with a child. It is interesting to note that the witnesses to this christening were each members of prominent, well established, if not wealthy, early Dutch families.
Further, the witness, Isaac Lansing was the brother of Anna Lansing who was married to Jacob Egmont. Jacob Egmont and Anna Lansing were the parents of Elsje Egmont, she later married Evert Seskby. The family connection between the parents and the witnesses therein is probably with Nicolaas' wife Merry and her relationship to the Egmont, Lansing, or Beekman families. Her maiden name is as yet unknown.
6 M v. Abraham(SIXBEY) SIKSBY-24was born at about 1724 in Albany, NY.
Abraham(SIXBEY) married (MRIN:18) Agnes Aegie ECKERSON-2520 Dec 1747 in DRC, Schoharie, NY. Agnes was born 9 Feb 1726 in Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY. She was christened 5 Feb 1727 in DRC, Schenectady, NY. She was the daughter of Jan and Maritie Slingerland Eckerson.
No record of the christening of Abraham Sexby (assumed to be born about 1724) has been located, but Abraham's marriage, recorded on Dec 20, 1747 at the Dutch Reformed Church at Schoharie stated that Abraham was born in Albany and that his father was named Nicholas. Nicholas, the husband of Merry, was the only Nicholas Sixberry known to be in Albany at about 1740.
Abraham's first son was named Nicholas (after his paternal grandfather). He was christened on December 3, 1749 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Schoharie. Abraham's first daughter was named Maria (after both grandmothers). She was christened at the Dutch Reformed Church at Schoharie on March 19, 1758.
On August 9, 1752, Nicholas Siksbey and Margarita Ekkerson witnessed the christening of Johannes, the son of Abraham Siksbey and Eva Ekkerson at the Dutch Reformed Church in Schenectady. The fact that this christening took place in Schenectady strongly suggests that this christening was witnessed by Abraham's brother, Nicholas, who later married Susanna Clement.
