OBITUARY
The subject of this brief sketch, John Oliver, was born in the town of New Scotland seventy-nine years ago the 12th of January. For forty-four years, he lived on the Oliver homestead near Font Grove, a mile and a half northeast of the village of New Scotland.
For the past thrity five years he had resided on the farm where he died, on the banks of the Normanskill, some two miles east of Voorheesville. In him prime, he was one of the strongest and most athletic men in our town, but during the past few years the scythe of time has been cutting fast at his vigorous constitution. But all sudden, last Saturday night, a stroke of apoplexy sent him to his bed. On Wednesday morning, surrounded by his children, the end came. Mr. Oliver was married three times and leaves five daughters and five sons to mourn his departure, one brother, Abram, and one sister, Mrs. Peter Livingston, both of Voorheesville. His sons are: Daniel of Binghamton; Irving of Delmar; John of Connecticut; Chris of New Scotland, and George of Voorheesville. His daughters are: Mrs. Chris LaGrange, Mrs. Chas. Miller, Mrs. Olive Hungerford, all of North Bethlehem; Mrs. Eliza Wagoner, of Albany, and Mrs. Jacob Weiss, of New Scotland. His funeral services were held Friday afternoon from his late residence, a large number of friends and relatives being in attendance. Mr. Hallenbeck of Altamont, had charge of the corporeal part of the services and Rev. S.M. Adsit of Voorheesville. Of the spiritual. His four sons, Irving, John, Chris and George, acted as pall bearers, placing their father’s remains in its windowless home in the family plot by the side of his wives in the cemetery at Guilderland.
