Notes for Elias SIGSBY

Elias is believed to be an unrecorded child of John and Leah Davenport Sixbee. It is doubtful that any documents will be uncovered to prove this beyond any doubt.

My guess is that Elias, Jr. was born in 1853 and not 1852 as reported on his death certificate. The marriage of Elias, Sr. and Elvira seems to be a solid date being recorded both at LDS and in the marriage records at Fulton Co., Ohio. It is very unlikely that Elvira was involved with Elias before her husband's death at about 1852.
Update: Elias, Jr.'s birh year that's recorded on his grave marker is 1853.

Book C, page 598: Dated 16 June 1836, from Elias Sixbey and wife of St. Joseph Co., Michigan, to Russell H. Garlick of Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. "All that certain piece, parcel or tract of land lying and being in St. Joseph County, Michigan Territory, known as described in the record of the land office at Bronson...." and then described as "The south half of the south west quarter of section no. fifteen in township no. eight south of range no. eleven west containing seventy-nine acres and seventy hundredths of an acre". The deed was signed by Elias Sixbey and his wife Elizabeth Sixbey. The deed was witnessed by Chapman Yates and Daniel Sigsby.

"Book C, page 587: Dated 15 June 1836, Elias Sixbey and wife to Russell H. Garlick, same as above. "Village lot number 24 as will more fully appear by the recorded plot of said village of White Pigeon." The witnesses to this deed were Wm. W. Eliot and Chapman Yates. "Elizabeth signed by mark on both deeds. After the two 1836 deeds, I found no further references to Elias in either the grantor or grantee indexes for St. Joseph Co."

Chapman Yates was in White Pigeon, St. Joseph County, MI in 1835 and 1836 he later removed to California. Elias' property was doubtless at White Pigeon.

Based on these deeds, Elias had a wife named Elizabeth. It is presumed that this is the same Elias who was the father of David.
