Jehu and Mary moved to Pendleton, Madison Co. IN about 1848 or 1849. He appears there for the 1850 census. They settled on a 160-acre farm NW of Pendleton, which is still in the family.

There are numerous stories about Jehu. Most have to do with his strength and temper.

Once he was walking into Pendleton (about 5 miles away) to vote, and he met three soldiers on the way to forcibly escort him to the polls. He knocked them all out and left them in the ditch. He went into town and voted, and then said, "Oh, by the way, you should probably send someone out to get your soldiers." (related by Horace Shuman, one of Nimrod's grandsons )

A group of young men were felling trees at the back of the property, when the dinner bell rang. He told the others to go on ahead; he wanted to cut down one more tree before quitting. He said that when they turned in at the gate by the house, they would hear it fall, and that is how it turned out. Using only an axe, he was able to cut down a large tree in the time it took the others to walk about an eighth of a mile! (related by Horace Shuman, one of Nimrod's grandsons )

He had traded a day's work with a neighbor. One morning at sunrise, the neighbor found him waiting when he went to do his chores. They bargained that shucking a wagon load of corn would be a day's work. So Jehu started off down the cornfield. As the neighbor came out to call him to dinner, Jehu was walking out to the road. There was an exchange of words, as the neighbor felt that a day's worth of work couldn't end at noon, but Jehu pointed to the wagon full of corn, and said he had to hurry home so he could shuck his own wagon's load before nightfall! (related by Joseph Skiles, a long-time neighbor )

Although he was a layman, he was consulted by neighbors for various minor medical problems, even setting broken bones in a few cases.
