Introduction to our Howe Family

1. Jacob Howe1 was born circa 1796 in Plattsburgh, New York, the son of Eri and Olleoney (Hubbard) How, and grandson of John and Chloe (Rowlson) Howe, who lived in Hampton, NY 1786 to 1793. They descended from Edward How of Lynn, Massachusetts. Jacob How's parents divorced, and both remarried. Eri How married (2) Mrs. Lovisa Buckland of Poultney, Vermont. Eri How served in the War of 1812 from Vermont, and died in 1814 at French's Mills, New York. Jacob How, his only son and heir, received bounty land for his father's service in the war. Olleoney (Hubbard) How married (2) Jacob T. Green of Plattsburgh, New York, and had a son, John H. Green, and a daughter, Rachel Green.

Jacob Howe lived in Poultney, Vermont. The vital records and land records of Poultney were lost in a courthouse fire in 1862. Therefore, the information presented in this genealogy has been derived from alternative sources, and include land, bible, church records, and family letters.

According to church records, Jacob Howe joined the Poultney Congregational Church in 1813. Jacob Howe married between 1817 and 1820, Hannah Prindle, daughter of Samuel and Nancy (Dunning) Prindle, of Poultney, Vermont. Hannah was born 25 Nov 1796, probably at Ferrisburg, Addison County, Vermont. Her family moved to Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont, and then settled in Poultney, where they are buried in the East Poultney Cemetery. According to the Poultney census records for 1830, Hannah and Jacob Howe had two sons, one son under 10, one son under 5. Our line is traced through their son, Albert Cyrus Howe. Hannah Prindle Howe reportedly died in the early 1830's. The Poultney Congregational Church records note Jacob Howe's departure in 1835. Thereafter, we have no further record of Jacob, except from letters written by some of his grandchildren. His granddaughter, Louisa wrote in 1930, " I very well remember Jacob Howe as he lived at our house when I was a child and he surely was very English, always wore a silk hat like a stove pipe, he was very nice and aristocratic." His grandson, Mahlon, "remembered Jacob as tall and straight, with a high silk hat and going to church with him."

He was living there at the time of his death Dec. 31st, 1906. He had ten children. One son died in infancy, two daughters Alice and Kathy died when grown to womanhood.
