Green Water Pond On The Jacobs Ladder Trail (DUDS)
From Souvenir Folder of Jacobs Ladder Trail, Mass. This building is still there.
"Just read your website about growing up on Jacob's Ladder. I remember going
by the Summit House when I was a child. We never stopped that I remember
because we were almost to my Grandmother's house.
My Grandparents, Harry and Cora Hastings, purchased the property on Green
Water Pond in 1920. My grandfather and his three sons (my father, Scott,
and his brothers - Donald and Kenneth) built the cottage themselves. My
grandmother wanted her own business and ran a gas station and lunchroom for
many years. She closed it before WWII and lived in Springfield for awhile
before moving to Pittsfield and then back to the Pond when she retired. In
1960, she moved to California to be with her son, Kenneth. My grandparents
were divorced in 1924 or 25 and my grandfather moved to Lee where he lived
until his death in 1954.
For many years we had no contact with my grandmother - from about 1947 until
1960. There were Christmas cards and occasional letters but we never saw
her. When she moved to California, she asked my Dad to look after the Pond
and use it as much as he liked. We then started using it as a vacation
place.
My sister and I were in high school at that time and really began to enjoy
the beauty of the Pond. My sister, who is two years older, has wonderful
memories of going with our grandmother up the mountain and to drink
wonderfully fresh spring water as it came off the mountain - I was deemed
too little to go with them. (I was three). My grandmother loved the Pond
even though there were no modern conveniences - no running water (hand pump
with a well in the cellar), electricity but no insulation, central heating,
telephone, no inside bathroom. She lived there year round - by herself,
with her books.
My parents and my children spend many summers at the Pond - the kids learned
to swim and paddle a canoe. Hours were spent hunting frogs in the stream or
catching gold fish. Friends were always welcome - if the flag was out
front, my parents were there and wanting company.
My dad had gone to Lee High School and still had many friends in the area.
Someone was always dropping in for coffee or a meal, a quick swim. As
college students my sister and I had weekend parties which always including
hiking to Goose Pond and a trip to Tanglewood.
I guess this is more information than you counted on. My dad would have
loved the internet (he passed away then years ago) and would have been
immediate in his response to you. He loved to talk about the old days - as
do I , I guess.
Thanks for putting your postcard on the internet.
