The Summit was about 2,000 feet above sea level and on the Jacob's Ladder Trail (or Roadway)(Route 20), West Becket, between Chester and Lee, Massachusetts. Work on the Jacob's Ladder Roadway had started about 1905 and was completed in 1910. Before that the road was almost impossible to negotiate by automobile. It was said that the dirt road looked like a ladder as there were rows of dirt going across the road to stop the rain from washing it out and on the sides of the road were clearings for horses and oxen to rest. Hence the name Jacob's Ladder. To mark the Summit a cairn or rock pile was erected during the celebration to dedicate the road, to some an historical marker. Sadly, it has been painted over with an ugly brown paint and it's meaning destroyed. The roadway was rebuilt in 1918 and again in 1930 and many cars took this route across the state to Albany,NY.
