Died in childhood.

200. Elizabeth Smith (Jane Bateman , Swanton , Charles ) was born 1 on 6 May 1848 in New Brunswick.

According to the 1900 census Elizabeth had given birth to 6 chidren, 5 of whom were still living. The four youngest were living with their parents at that time in Chandler tp, Lincoln county, Oklahoma. Elizabeth had immigrated to the USA in 1856.

Elizabeth married Robert W. Bateman on 19 Oct 1868 in Jackson County, Kansas. Robert was born in Jan 1835 in "Canada" (now Ontario).

1875 Kansas state census indicates that Robert was born in Canada and had moved from Michigan to Kansas. It has not been proven that the Robert W. Bateman who married Elizabeth Smith in Kansas was the son of William Bateman and Mary Hodgins, but I believe it must be so. In 1870 Robert and Elizabeth and their son Byron were living in Vienna tp, Pottawatomie county, Kansas; Robert's age is given as 33, supporting idea that he is the same Robert who was aged 23 and in prison in Michigan in 1860 (see separate entry). Elizabeth was 22. Robert was a farmer. In 1880 census Robert is said to be aged 44 years, Elizabeth's age was 33 (Lincoln, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, NA Film #T9-0393, p. 389A). In the 1900 Census (Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma: D 116, Sheet 6-B) Robert was 65, parents born Ireland; Elizabeth 52, father born Ireland, mother Canada; children still at home were Wallace B. 21, Hiddon 18, Winfield 16, Inez D. 11, all born Kansas. Robert had immigrated to the USA in 1858.

Robert and Elizabeth had the following children:

616 M i Byron Bateman was born 1 in Sep 1869 in Kansas.

Byron was a farmer in Chandler tp., Oklahoma in 1900.
Byron married 1 (1) Lula about 1894 in USA. Lula was born in Apr 1877 in Kansas.

In 1900 Lula had given birth to two children.
Byron married (2) Laura E.. Laura was born 1 about 1879 in Minnesota.

In 1900 Viola had given birth to two children.
620 M v Marquis Lafayette Bateman was born 1 in Jan 1877 in Kansas.

In 1900 Marquis was living with his brother Byron and his family. 1930 Census: Marquis was a widower, aged 53, resident of District 6, Cheyenne, Colorado. The only other resident of the household was his son James O. There are no other Batemans in District 6.
Marquis married wife. wife was born in West Virginia. She died before 1930 in Colorado.

Based on 1930 census record for Marquis and son James.
621 M vi Wallace B. Bateman was born 1, 2 in Nov 1878 in Kansas.

I think this must be the man identified as Bruce Bateman in the 1910 census, as his mother was born in New Brunswick and father in English Canada. He was a farmer in Chandler tp, Lincoln county, Oklahoma.
Wallace married 1 Drewzilla about 1906 in USA. Drewzilla was born 2 about 1886 in Missouri.

Drewzilla had given birth to two children in 1910.
622 M vii Hiddon M. Bateman was born 1 in May 1882 in Kansas.
Hiddon married 1 Effie M. about 1907 in USA. Effie was born 2 about 1888 in Missouri.

In 1856 Thomas was 5 years old and living with the family of Cornelius and Almira Vanhozen in Marion county, Iowa.
Believed to be living in Holton, Kansas at time of death.

Thomas married 1 Mary E. [Stokes] on 9 May 1875. Mary died after 20 Nov 1927.

Mary was a widow when she married Thomas. Her maiden name is unknown--Stokes was her first husband's name.

They had the following children:

  625 M i Leonard Smith.

Living in Chicago, Illinois at the time of his father's death.

205. Samuel Bateman (Edward C. , Charles , Charles ) was born 1 on 4 Jul 1851 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West.

Samuel married Isabella McRoberts. Isabella was born 1 on 23 Jul 1854 in Ontario. She died in 1945.

They had the following children:

626 M i Francis James Bateman was born 1 on 18 Jul 1885 in Ontario.
627 F ii Dolla Maggie Bell Bateman was born 1 on 14 Jan 1892 in Ontario.

207. Francis James Bateman (Edward C. , Charles , Charles ) was born on 28 May 1857 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West. He died on 12 Apr 1930 in Strathroy, Middlesex County, Ontario.

Francis was listed as a school teacher in 1881. He later became a physician, practicing in Strathroy. Death registration #24428--1930: age 82, cause of death cardiovascular renal disease for 2 years--senility contributory; informant was his wife who gave his date of birth as May 1848. In 1901 his birthdate was listed as 29 May 1857. In 1881 his age was listed as 26, which would have meant born about 1856, suggesting the 1901 record could be correct.

Francis married Margaret Ann Condon on 29 Apr 1901 in St Peter's Catholic Church, London, Ontario. Margaret was born on 13 Nov 1869 in New York State, USA. She died on 5 Oct 1932 in London, Ontario. She was buried in R.C. Cemetery, Strathroy, Ontario.

Death reg'n #23814-1932: resided at 41 Blackfriar's St., London for 6 days before death; had lived in Ontario for 30 years; father Joseph Condon, born Ireland, mother unknown; cause of death cerebral embolism, mitral endocarditis 3 days; informant John Joseph Bateman of 41 Blackfriar's St.
None of Margaret and Francis's children were registered at birth--strange given that he was a physician? However, she was Catholic and that may be the explanation, as Catholic families were less likely to register vital events.

Francis and Margaret had the following children:

628 F i Margaret Bateman was born about 1902 in Strathroy, Middlesex County, Ontario. She died on 11 Apr 1904 in Oxford St, Strathroy, Ontario.

1901 census lists birth date of "Thomas" Bateman as 6 Mar 1868, but other records suggest he was born in 1869, a year later than his wife. Obituary from The Okotoks Review, 23 September, 1949:

Notes of Jennie Sharpe Bateman:
I was born on April 6, 1868 in the village of Teeswater, Ontario, in our home here; attended Public School here, until I qualified for High School , which was at Walkerton our County town. Took what was called a Third Class Non Professional Certificate (now Grade 10 I think) in 6 months. Then took a 4 mos Teacher’s Practice or Normal Course, and got my Professional Certificate, and taught for three years in a country school, almost 4 miles N.E. from Teeswater---2-1/2 miles north 1-1/4 mile east. Then went to Harriston and later Kincardiane H.S. to be with sister Bessie (who wanted to go ) for a year and took my Non-Professional 2nd. Class or Grade 11 now. Taught for 2-1/2 years at Westford a sem-country school on the way to Kincardine. Attended Toronto Normal for 6 mos to get Prof. 2nd class Certificate. After that I taught for 2-1/2 years in a country school in Middlesex County about 10 miles from Strathroy and 17 miles from London: where I met my future husband, Wellington Thomas Bateman; and later on I went to Manitoba and taught in the town of Hartney near my sister, Mrs. Wm Forbes’ country home and later in the town of Killarney- (altogether about 4 or 5 years). Then came home to Teeswater to be married in the year 1898, and to our farm home in Middlesex where Fred was born in 1900. Lost one baby before Fred and one after. We sold the farm and moved to Manitoba to farm there in the spring of 1902. Sold out and went to B.C. near Nelson in 1907. Came to Alta. In 1910 and lived there near Calgary continuously till I cam here to Teeswater to take care of my sisters, in 1940, in their old age and infirmity. Sister Mary died October 4th, 1946.
