The 1850 Census for Bethlehem Tp, Coshocton County, Ohio (Sheet 201, House 91) lists John at age 55, a farmer with a net worth of $200. His wife's name is listed as Lorina, age 50. Children in the household included: Matthew age 15 and Hesteranne age 12, born in New Brunswick and Elizabeth 10, Martha 8 and Susannah 6, all born in Ohio.
Kathie Simon submitted the following obituary, taken from the Holton Recorder, September 19, 1897:
John Parrott, one among the old settlers of Jackson county, died of old age, at his residence in this city, yesterday at 12 o'clock m. [sic] Mr. Parrott was born near Bandon, Ireland, March, 1894 [sic -probably should be 1794], and was, at his death, past eighty-five years of age. In 1819, about a year after his marriage, he removed from Ireland to Barthel, New Brunswick, and shortly after arriving at his new home, embraced Christianity and joined the Wesleyan Methodist church, in which he was an active laborer, contributing largely to the building of the first Wesleyan church in Barthel. In the year 1847 he removed with his family to Ohio, and from thence to this county in 1859. After coming to the United States he joined the M. E. church, continuing in the same a faithful, conscientious member until his death. He lived with his wife, who survives him, a little over sixty-one years. The deceased was an honest, hard working farmer, who in the course of his life cleared two large farms in the forest and improved one on the prairie. He impressed everyone with whom he came in contact that he was a faithful, zealous Christian and one who enjoyed his religion and esteemed it above every earthly good. His last hours were hours of triumph. Among his last words uttered was a verse of the last hymn written by Charles Wesley: -
In age and feebleness extreme
Who shall a sinful worm redeem?
Jesus my only hope thou art.
Strength of my flesh and failing heart;
O, could I catch a smile from thee
And drop into eternity.

In 1840 there are two Bateman households in Coshocton County, Ohio: one is headed by Charles, the other by Robert. In Robert's household there is one boy under 5 years of age, men in their 20s and 70s, and women in their 20s and 70s. It is likely that Matthew and Sarah were the couple who were in their 70s, and Robert and his wife in their 20s.
The age of the Robert Bateman buried in the Bateman cemetery suggests that he must be the son of Matthew and Sarah. Placement not proven.

13. Sarah Bateman 1, 2 (Matthew , Charles ) was born in 1815 in County Cork, Ireland. She died 3 on 9 Dec 1894 in Jackson County, Kansas.
Henderson (1933) indicated that Sarah and her husband Charles were second cousins. If so, Sarah's father Matthew and Charles' father, Swanton would be first cousins, not brothers.
Sarah's Obituary: "Sarah Bateman was born in Bandon, Ireland, 1815, and died at her home in Jackson county, Kansas, December 9, 1894. Her family emigrated from Ireland when she was about two years old. It required six weeks to make the trip across the Atlantic; and at last landed in St. Johns Harbor, New Brunswick. From there they moved to Fredericktown [sic] where they resided about seventeen years. The family consisted of eight children--two boys and six girls. From this place they moved to Coshocton county, Ohio. She was united in marriage to Charles Bateman in 1839. They remained in Ohio about fourteen years, in which time four children were born to them, namely John Henry, William, George and Thomas. From this home they moved to Canada [Ontario], remaining there about five years. Three other children born to them--Robert, Jane and Edward. In moving from this home they took up their residence in Minnesota, but remained there but six months; and from there they moved to Marion county, Iowa, but remained there but one year, when they came to Kansas, locating in Jackson county, at their present home where they resided until the end of her earthly pilgrimage where, on Sunday last, December 9, 1894, she fell asleep in Jesus, surrounded by her family. The companion of her youth, who now bears the burden of eighty-three years, was still by her side as she passed the swelling of the Jordan to the happy home beyond. With a strong trusting faith, he is pressing on and by and bye will pass beyond the coils of sorrow into the clear light of eternal peace, and join her in the anthems of eternal victory.
"In youth before her marriage, she united with the church, so at last she has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church about sixty years.
"This has been her home for thirty-seven years, and in this residence of over a third of a century you as neighbors have known her as a neighbor, a friend and a member of the church. Cherish all her motherly virtues, emulate every good noble trait, and let your life be better because she lived and may her living and her death help you to see and know more of our heavenly Father's love, and His purposes in your eternal redemption."

Excerpt from notes recorded at a Bateman family reunion held about 1940 near London, Ontario:
"Swanton Chambers told of his trip to Holton, Kansas to visit Grandmother Bateman’s brother Charles’ family. Charles Bateman went to Holton Kansas travelling with two oxen in a covered wagon and leading two cows. It took two years to complete his journey. When leaving his sister, Mary asked him where he was going? He said, “Where no person was living but there would be when he arrived.” Charles had seven sons, three of whom settled near Holton. Edward and George were veterinary surgeons and Robert a farmer who still lives near Holton."
DEATH OF CHARLES BATEMAN
Another one of your pioneer citizens has been called from our midst, and a chapter in the history of our county has been closed. In 1857, just afer the townsite of Holton had been laid out, and before any houses had been erected, Charles Bateman, with his family came to Jackson county, and settled on a piece of prairie two miles north of the then staked out townsite. Here he has lived for the past 39 years, doing his part toward the rapid development of our county. His sons have grown into manhood here, and settled around the old home place, becoming under the trainng of the father useful citizens. The influence of such a pioneer does not cease with his laying down the tools of labor; it goes on for generations.
Charles Bateman was born in Ireland, and was at the time of his death, Friday, February 21, 84 years, 1 month and 23 days old. When two years old his parents emigrated to New Brunswick, where he resided 22 years. He then came to Ohio, living there some 16 years. In this state he was married, his wife living until about a year ago, when she preceded him to the better land. He afterwards removed to Canada, then to Minnesota and Iowa, and in May, 1857 came to Kansas. He had been in very good health for a man of his years, and at the last was only sick some three or four days. The funeral was held at the residence of his son, Edward, with whom he was lately resided, on Saturday, the service being conducted by the Rev. E. F. Holland of the M. E. church, to which the deceased belonged.
He leaves four sons, John Henry, George B., Robert, and Edward S., to mourn the departure of a father, and the whole community in which he lived will miss him." (The Holton Weekly Signal, 28 Feb 1896, p. 8). He was buried on 22 Feb 1896 in Holton Cemetery, Holton, Jackson Co, Kansas.

1900 census indicates George was born in Canada and came to the USA in 1866, although this is clearly incorrect as he was in Iowa in 1856 when he was said to be 10 years old and born in Ohio (as does the 1880 census).

George C. Bateman was born the 8th day of March, 1845, in the state of Ohio. Deceased spent over a half century in the vicinity of Holton, where he owned one of the finest farms in Jackson county.
Mr. Bateman was 66 years, four months, and twenty-five days at the time of his death. He leaves no children from either marriage. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Susie Bateman, a host of relatives and every one was his friend. His familiar form will be greatly missed by all. Uncle George despised shame of every form, himself honest and frank, he therefore expected the same of every one else. He was sick less than twenty four hours and died August the second. The burial services were conducted at the Baptist church of which he was a member, joining the church a great many years ago. Prayer was offered in the home before leaving for the church in the afternoon at 2 o’clock. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Holton. The Odd Fellows attended in a body. The pastor, his wife and daughter, and Mr. Jackson did the singing and the sermon was preached from Job using these words, “If a man die shall he live again?” From the church a great concourse of friends accompanied the remains to the Holton cemetery, where amid a profusion of flowers all that was mortal of our dear friend was laid to rest under the auspices of the Odd Fellows dismissed by his pastor, Jesse H. Jones. Uncle George has been toiling with his hands to build a character not massive and grand, but one that like pure gold, will grow brighter with the using, and passing of time, and so we say peace to his ashes and blessings upon his deeds."
Note, although this obituary also says George was born in Ohio, the 1851 Canadian census confirms he was born in Canada.George married 1, 2 (1) Louisa Latimer on 27 Jan 1862 in Jackson County, Kansas. Louisa was born on 3 Dec 1848 in Indiana. She died on 7 Jul 1888.
No children on the 1870 or 1880 census. Name also spelled as Latamer. In 1880 listed as "Moriah L.", age 30. This is probably the Louise Bateman who is buried in Holton Cemetery--not confirmed.George married (2) Susan M. Williamson on 10 Sep 1889 in Jackson County, Kansas. Susan was born 1 in Oct 1867 in Kansas. She died after Aug 1911.
Margaret's parents were born in Ireland (1900 census).71 M iv Thomas S. Bateman was born on 11 Apr 1848 in Canada. He died 1, 2 on 18 Mar 1861 in Jackson County, Kansas. He was buried in Holton Cem., Holton, Kansas.

Placement believed correct based on later records for the family. Lived on Lot 12, 1st Concession, Caradoc tp. Cause of death was "consumption" (1851 census).

In the 1860 census a Robert and Swanton Bateman of Canada were enumerated in the state prison in Jackson, Michigan. Their ages match this Robert and his brother and it is presumed it was likely they. Robert is said to be a carpenter by trade and 23 years of age. Although there is a record of Swanton, the younger brother, being pardoned in 1863, I have not found any record of a pardon being granted to Robert. This is possibly the Robert who married Mary Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Jane Bateman and Matthew Smith, and lived in Kansas, although I have no proof of this relationship (see separate entry for husband of Mary Elizabeth).+ 78 M iv John William Bateman was born on 13 Aug 1838. He died on 21 Dec 1907. 79 M v Swanton Bateman was born on 15 Jul 1840 in Middlesex County, Upper Canada. He was christened 1 on 15 Jun 1851 in Christ Church, Delaware, Middlesex County. In the 1860 census a Robert and Swanton Bateman of Canada were enumerated in the state prison in Jackson, Michigan. Their ages match this Swanton and his brother and it is presumed it was likely they. In December 1859 Swanton was sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbery. The 1860 census indicates his age was 19 and occupation was "Cons or Com Laborer." May 19, 1863 he was pardoned by Governor Austin Blair ( https://sites.rootsweb.com/~miingham/Pardons4.html ).
There is also a record of a Swanton Bateman, age 22, enlisted in the army in Detroit 25 May 1864--probably also this Swanton--he fought for the Union in Company H, 15 Michigan Infantry Unit. He remained a private at the time of his discharge. No further information about Swanton is known. I have not attempted to find more detailed military records to follow this up.

Possibly the George Bateman, aged 55, born March 1845, living in Pottawatamie County, Kansas in 1900. If so, had been married to wife Margaret (born Ireland 1842) for 14 years, so that date fits, even if birth date is out? Census indicates he had immigrated to the USA 34 years earlier. However, that could also be George C. Bateman who was born March 1845. But his wife doesn't fit so well--truly a dilemma to be sorted out!George married 1 Margaret J. Williamson on 15 Oct 1885 in Delaware, Ontario. Margaret was born 2 in Mar 1842 in Ireland.
At the time she married, Margaret was said to be 38 years old and a resident of Caradoc tp. Her parents were John and Susan Williamson. Esther Bateman, widow age 68, was living in Bathurst in 1871. I was originally given information that Esther died in 1886 and was buried in the "Old Anglican" Churchyard, but I believe that record was in error, and that Hester Bateman, aged 76 and buried in 1879 was probably this woman.
Esther married 2 John Bateman Jr. 1 on 12 Feb 1822 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland. John was born about 1800 in County Cork, Ireland. He died in Jun 1867 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was buried 3 on 28 Jun 1867 in Old Anglican Church, Bathurst, Gloucester County, NB.
Age 60 on 1861 census, but tombstone indicates 68 at time of death in 1866. Irma Downing's transcript of the parish register indicates buried 28 June 1867. (Census records for this family: 1861, Upper New Bandon District, Gloucester County, NB, p. 81, # 563-568 and p. 95, #1124-1127; 1871, Gloucester County, Div. 2, #14; Div. 3, # 47-48.) The baptism record for son William identifies this John as "John Junr", and with "John Senr" as a sponsor.

At the time of his marriage, William was a farmer in Ballyshoneen, County Cork. In New Brunswick he was said to have lived in Fredericton, NB, but the census records for this family are in New Bandon: 1861, Gloucester County, NB, Upper New Bandon District, p. 81, # 566, 577; 1871, Gloucester County Div 3, p. 47.

28. Catherine Bateman 1 (John , Charles ) was christened 2 on 29 May 1808 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland. She died on 13 Jan 1895 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. She was buried 3 on 13 Jan 1895 in Old Anglican Church, Bathurst, Gloucester County, NB.
Baptism sponsors were Elizabeth Bateman and Catherine Ellis. Catherine was a resident of Glanduff, just outside the village of Kilbrittain, at the time of her marriage. In 1881 she and her daughter Catherine lived in Bathurst (1881 census). Her tombstone indicates she died in 1895, age 85.
Catherine married 2 John Good 1 on 8 May 1830 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland. John was born about 1801 in County Cork, Ireland. He died on 2 Dec 1873 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was buried 3 on 5 Dec 1873 in Old Anglican Church, Bathurst, Gloucester County, NB.
John was a resident of Belrose, Knockavilly Parish in County Cork at the time his marriage. Belrose is roughly half way between Bandon and Cork city. John was said to be 71 at the time of his death. Year of immigration to New Brunswick unknown, but estimated that gap in births of children between 1834 and 1840 may indicate that this was when the family came to Canada.

Charles' mother was not named in the baptism record. He was probably the Charles Bateman, aged 68, buried at St. George's Church, Bathurst, 11 July 1878 (but see also Charles, son of Charles Bateman and Elizabeth Haggertie)
Charles married 1 Ann Ellis in 1835 in County Cork, Ireland. Ann was born 2 about 1816 in County Cork, Ireland. She died in Dec 1896 in New Brunswick. She was buried 3 on 18 Dec 1896 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick.
In 1881 Ann was a widow living with her son John C. Bateman--her age was given as 66. Age at death said to be 82.
