Notes for AUSTIN SEAY:

From Descendants of Abraham Seay, page 23

"Austin Jr., was an ambitious and industrious man, perhaps a little too ambitious for his best interests. He operated a farm. a tan yard, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a general store which included the local post office. His enthusiasm was greater than his business acumen, and he failed to get a profit from so many business ventures, finally becoming so greatly involved that he lost nearly everything he owned. His inclination to dip into so many business experiments earned for him the sobriquet of "Austin, the Dipper" Austin's descendants owned the old colonial homeplace up to a few years ago [book written in 1966], when it was sold to Fork Union Military Academy. "

i. MORTON5 SEAY24, b. Abt. 1816.

10. JOSEPH4 SEAY (AUSTIN3, ABRAHAM2, ABRAHAM1) He married LUCY HUGHES March 14, 1813 in Fluvanna Co., VA.

Notes for JOSEPH SEAY:

John M. Seay, sole beneficiary of will recorded in Fluvanna W.B. pg 144, dated 6/30/1826.

Joseph and Lucy Seay conveyed 1 1/2 acres of land for the sum of $9.00 to John Hartwell Cocke, Thomas W. Omohundro and John Winn Trustees, appointed to purchase land on which to build a Union House of worship. This Church to be used jointly, but under special arrangements by the adherents of the Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Baptist faiths.

In later years the Baptist purchased the interests of the other denominations and then the Fork church became Fork Union Baptist Church. The original building, much enlarged, still stands on the land originally purchased from Joseph and Lucy Seay. It has been said that Benjamin Seay, a Methodist, and a brother of Joseph, a Baptist, gave this land for the church building in 1820, but for some reason no transfer of deed was made. Joseph apparently became owner o the tract of land, that included the 1 1/2 acres before 1824, for on 12/22/1824 Joseph and Lucy deeded the land to the appointed trustees (Fluvanna D.B. 14, page 620)
