| "Mrs. Sarah Scarlett Dies" "End Comes to Pioneer Following Long Period of Illness "Mrs. Susan Scarlett, a resident of Atchison county since 1859, passed away at the home of her son, John G. Scarlett in Fairfax, Thursday, October 30. She had been in poor health for several years, and in the latter days of her life continued to gradually decline, the end coming peacefully and with but little suffering. "Mrs. Scarlett was a native of Ohio. She was born in Ross county, near Chilicothe, February 5, 1843, but came to Missouri and settled in Atchison county with her parents in 1859. Aside from two years spent in Iowa, a short time before her marriage, Mrs. Scarlett resided continuously in Atchison since that time. "Her maiden name was Miss Sarah VanGundy. She was married to James Scarlett March 28, 1861, and four sons were born to them--William W. and John G. of Fairfax, Samuel V. of Hollister, Calif., and James F. of Brookings, S. Dak. In the home also were three daughters of her husband by a former marriage--Rebecca, now deceased, Mrs. C. E. Scarlett of Fairfax and Mrs. Susanna VanGundy of Sand Point, Idaho. "Mr. Scarlett passed away about fifteen years ago and she has since made her home much of the time with her son, John G. Scarlett, also residing a part of the time with her son, William, southwest of Fairfax. "Mrs. Scarlett united early in life with the Methodist church at Milton, and during the active years of her life was a very devoted worker in the activities of the congregation. She was a true, consecrated Christian.
"The funeral services were conducted Friday, October 31, at the Milton church of which she was a member for so many years. The pastor, Rev. E. V. Campbell, officiated, assisted by Rev. J. W. Howerton, of the Fairfax Methodist church." Fairfax Forum (NE) 7November1919 |
