This morning the funeral of Mrs. Sarah Francis [Scarlett] Hetzell took place from the family residence in the Bethel community. Rev. Clarence Aldrich, of the Bethel church had charge of the services. The interment took place at the Bethel cemetery. There was a large gathering of friends at the funeral Mrs. Hetzell was forty years of age, she is survived by her husband, Edwin M. Hetzell, a prominent ranchman of the Bethel neighborhood and one son, Clarence. She suffered from pneumonia. Her aged father, Mr. Scarlett, also survives her. Mrs. Hetzell was a highly respected lady.

MRS. HETZEL PASSED AWAY TODAY

Well Known Lady of the Bethel District Succumbed After A Year’s Illness; Burial Tomorrow

This morning, about 8:30, at the family home, Rose hill ranch, 2 miles north of Bethel, occurred the death of Mrs. Amy Hetzel, wife of E. M. Hetzel, well known rancher of that district. Death ended an illness that dated back for a year.

Mrs. Hetzel was 49 years of age and is survived by her husband; two sons, Kenneth and Ellis, both of whom are at home, and a step-son, Raymond Hetzel. Mr. and Mrs. Hetzel have resided in the Bethel District since 1903 and have a wide circle of friends over the valley who will deeply regret her death.

The funeral service will beheld from the home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30, with interment in Crown Point cemetery.

EDWARD HETZEL DIES HERE TUESDAY NIGHT

Edward M. Hetzel, 86, 131 White, died late Tuesday [Sep 5, 1950] night following a five-week illness..

Services for the deceased have not yet been arranged.

Mr. Hetzel, a resident of the Grand Valley area for the past 47 years was born July 11, 1864, at Springfield, Ill where he lived with his parents until they moved to Longmont, Colo. in 1870. He resided in Longmont until 1903 when he moved to western Colorado.

The deceased was married to Sarah F. Scarlett who died in 1906, [married] on Jan 1 1895. On June 2, 1907 he married Amy M. Scarlett, who also preceded him in death, along with three children.

Surviving are two sons, e. r. Hetzel, Appleton; Kenneth M. Hetzel, Pamona; a sister, Mrs. L. P. Dorman, Los Angeles, Calif.; nine grand children and three great grand children.

Mary Elizabeth Stotz Dies Early Today at Home of Her Daughter

Fruita, July 22. – Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Stotz, 83, died at 3:30 o’clock this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charlene Cattles, in the Hunter district.

Mrs. Stotz, resident of the Grand Valley about 58 years, had been ill for the past two months.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Martin chapel in Grand Junction, with the Rev. Frank Weaver officiating. Burial will be made in the Crown Point cemetery at Appleton.

Pallbearers will be Ross Scarlett, Ivan Scarlett, Kenneth Hetzel, Raymond Hetzel, Clarence Files, and Clyde Cattles. The Appleton Brethren church musicians will provide music for the rites.

Mary Elizabeth Scarlett was born Feb. 18, 1861, in Iowa, and she spent the early part of her life in that state. She came to Grand Junction about 60 years ago and was married in March 1906 to Henry P. Stotz, at Grand Junction.

Mr. and Mrs. Stotz made their home in Grand Junction for approximately 29 years. He died in February 1935, and the following year Mrs. Stotz moved to the Hunter community.

Mrs. Stotz was the last member of a family of four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cattles; two grandchildren, Mrs. June Files, and Clyde Cattles; four great grand children; and several nieces and nephews.

IVAN SCARLETT

March 12, 1913 – July 19, 1992

Memorial services for Ivan Scarlett of new Castle will be a 2 p.m. Wednesday in Apple Tree community church at Apple Tree Park in New Castle with Pastor Joel Miller officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Mr. Scarlett died of natural causes Sunday in Valley View Hospital in Glenwood springs. He was 79.

He was born march 12, 1913, in Grand Junction, where he spent his childhood.

Mr. Scarlett married Verda Mae Elliott on July 28, 1930, in Grand Junction. She survives.

They moved to Glenwood springs in the early 1950’s and to New Castle in 1983.

He worked as a heavy-equipment operator for many years and in construction and logging.

Mr. Scarlett was a member of Apple Tree Community Church. He was also a member of Glenwood Springs Lodge No. 62 of the Masons.

He enjoyed woodworking, fly-fishing and watching boxing.

Other survivors include two sons and daughters – in – law, Donald and Denise Scarlett of Orlando, FL. And John and Donna Scarlet of Glenwood Springs; four grandchildren, Debra J. Smart Wold of Grand Junction, Linda A Smart Melsen of Denver, Ralph D. Smart of New Castle, and Ambra B. Scarlett of Glenwood Springs, and three great-grandchildren.

Two daughters, Leila Mae Scarlett and Marilyn R. Smart-Wold; a brother; and two sisters are deceased. His last sister, Edith Bauer, died one hour before his death.

Farnum-Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs is in charge of arrangements.

Mary M. [Scarlett] Rhoades

Mary M. Rhoades, 83, owner and shop operator of the Duchess Beauty Shop in Paonia for 35 years, died Sunday Dec 27, 1981, at 541 ½ Glen Road, her home for five years.

She was the widow of George Rhoades who died in Denver in 1956.

Mrs. Rhoades was a 1936 graduate of the Western Slope Beauty School. She moved to Paonia in 1941.

She was member of the Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the Beauticians Union, and the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Rhoades was born Mary Scarlett July 14, 1898, Eaton, Colo., and attended schools in Appleton.

The Rhoades were married in Montrose Aug 12, 1926.

Her first marriage, to Jack Edwards, ended in divorce.

Surviving are one daughter, Grace Nessen of Oceanside, Calif; one brother, Ivan Scarlett of Glenwood Springs; one sister, Mrs. Alex (Edith) Bauer of Grand Junction, and one grandchild.

Funeral Services, Held for Charles Scarlett, Olathe

Olathe, may 17, - funeral services for Charles B. Scarlett of Olathe were held Friday afternoon at the First Baptist church here, Rev. J. Sanders officiating. Burial was in Olathe cemetery.

Mr. Scarlett, who died April 30, is survived by his wife; three children, Leo Scarlett, who is here from naval training in Pensacola, Fla.; Mrs. Helen Lorraine Kowitz, San Francisco, Calif.; and Nina Scarlett, eighth grade pupil at the Olathe schools; Harland Scarlett of Olathe, a brother; Mrs. Amy Holloway of Grand Junction, a sister; and two half brothers, Harry [Harvey] Whitemore [Whitmore] of Severance and Bruce Whitemore [sic] of Brighton.

Mr. Scarlet was born at Severance, Colo. Dec 4, 1892. He has lived on the western slope for the past 37 years. He married Etta Phillips Feb. 11, 1918 at Delta. Until six weeks prior to his death, Mr. Scarlett was engaged in farming.

SAM SCARLETT DIED TODAY

This morning at 2 o’clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Stotz, in the Pomona district, occurred the death of Samuel Scarlett, aged 84 years and six months, and for the past 17 years a resident of the Grand Valley. Mr. Scarlett had been in rapidly failing health for the past year, and had been seriously ill for some time past.

Mr. Scarlett is survived by four children; Mrs. E. M. Hetzel, Mrs. Stotz, James and Will Scarlett, all residents of this valley.

The funeral service will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Bethel church, conducted by the Rev. Fleisher.

J. O. SCARLETT DIED TUESDAY

Pomona Rancher succumbed to Heart Ailment; No Funeral Arrangements

James O. Scarlett, well-known rancher of the Pomona district., died yesterday afternoon at 2:10 o’clock. He had been ill with heart trouble for about three weeks. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

He had been an active man, and his illness had not seemed serious until a week ago when he grew very ill and passed away Tuesday afternoon at the family home in the Pomona district. He had been a builder of that community for the 37 years that he has been a part of it.

Born in Hartford, Iowa, February 10, 1870, he moved to Colorado with his parents when he was 7 years old. The family again moved, settling in the Pomona district in 1906. His father, Samuel Scarlett, passed away 13 years ago. His mother died many years ago.

His widow and one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Sellers of the Appleton district, survive. Two sisters, Mrs. Harvey Stotz of Victorville, Calif. and Mrs. R. U. Martindale of Windsor, Colo., two brothers, William N. Scarlett of Appleton, and Samuel Scarlett of Victorville, Calif. And two grandchildren, Helen and James Sellars also survive.

Mrs. Minnie (Williams) Scarlett, Pomona Resident, Dies Early Tuesday Morning.

Mrs. Minnie Adeline Scarlett, widow of J. O. Scarlett, Pomona, died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. J. L. Sellars, hunter, at 5:45 a. m. today following a serious illness of one week. Mrs. Scarlet had been in poor health for two years.

Funeral services will beheld at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Martin mortuary.

Minnie Adeline Williams was born to Clark and Mary Williams at Greeley, Feb 16, 1873, and spent the early part of her life there. She was married Dec 21, 1898, at Greeley to James O. Scarlett.

Mr. and Mrs. Scarlett moved to Lamar about 1900 and to the Grand Valley in 1906. They established their home on a farm in the Pomona district. Mr. Scarlett died 11 years ago.

Mrs. Scarlett was well known in the Pomona community and had a wide circle of friends. She was a member of the Pomona Women’s club and the Bethel Methodist Church.

Surviving are the one daughter, Mrs. Silvia Sellars, Hunter; two grandchildren. Pvt. James S. Sellars, Fort Robinson, Ark; and Helen E. Sellars. At home; one sister, Mrs. Mae Raymond, Caldwell, Idaho; and a brother, Claude Williams, Morrill, Neb.

William Scarlett died on Thursday

William Marion Scarlett, 65 years of age and a resident o Colorado since he was a babe of one year and of the Appleton district of Mesa county for the past 33 years., passed away on Thanksgiving day, Nov. 30 1939 at the family home eight miles north and west of this city. It is probable that services will e held Sunday, although definite arrangements will await word from relatives who will be here to attend the service. The body is at the Martin Funeral home.

Mr. Scarlett was born August 18, 1874 in Medford County Iowa. His parents immigrated to Colorado when he was but one year, locating near Denver. It was 33 years ago Mr. Scarlett moved to Mesa County, locating in the Appleton district where his death occurred yesterday.

In 1895, at Greeley, Colo. Mr. Scarlett was united in marriage to Miss Leila May Young. The widow with four children, Ross Scarlett, Mary Rhoades, Edith Scarlett and Ivan H. Scarlett, survive. There are also surviving two sisters, Mrs. Mary Stotz of Fruita and Rachael Martindale of Longmont, Colo., his parents preceded him in death. Nine grandchildren survive.

While he was not a member of any church, Mr. Scarlett lived his religion by being a good husband, father, neighbor and friend, and his death will be deeply regretted not only by the members of the family but by his wide circle of friends.

Scarlett Service Will be Sunday

Services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, from Martin’s Funeral Home, for William Marion Scarlett, pioneer of the valley who passed away Thanksgiving Day at his home eight miles north and west of this city. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Keith, pastor of the Methodist church and burial will be made in the Crown Point Cemetery north from Appleton, and near where the deceased had made his home for many years past.

Mr. Scarlett was a widely known resident of the valley.

Mrs. Leila Scarlett

Mrs. Leila May Scarlett, 85, of 327 Belford Ave., died at 12:05 a.m. today in St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was the widow of William Marion Scarlett, a farmer in the Appleton area, who died Nov 30, 1939.

The Scarletts moved to the Grand Valley 58 years ago from Lamar. Mrs. Scarlett moved to Grand Junction following her husband’s death.

Mrs. Scarlett was born Leila May Young in Taylor County, Iowa, Oct 30, 1878. She moved to Colorado as a youngster and was married at Eaton in 1895. She was a member of the old Bethel Methodist Church at Appleton. The church is no longer in existence.

She is survived by a son, Ivan of Glenwood Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Edith Bauer of Silver Springs, MD and Mrs. Mary Rhoades of Paonia; a brother, Ed Young of North Hollywood, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Martin’s Chapel. The Rev. Frederick G. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Point Cemetery.

Ross Oliver Scarlett, Former Resident, Dies Unexpectedly Saturday

Ross Oliver Scarlett, Craig, former resident of Appleton, died unexpectedly from a heart attack at 6 a.m. Saturday at Greeley.

The body will be sent to Grand Junction for funeral services. Martin Mortuary will be in charge of arrangements, and burial will be in Crown Point cemetery.

Mr. Scarlett was born Dec 20, 1895 at Windsor, Colo. The son of William and Leila Scarlett. The family removed to Appleton district in 1906 from Weld County, and he resided in Appleton until moving to Craig nine years ago.

The deceased married Miss Leola Florence Fuller Nov 21, 1916, at Grand Junction.

Mr. Scarlett served in the Army infantry overseas in France in World War I and he was a member of the American Legion at Craig. He was engaged in trucking at the time of his death.

Surviving in addition to his widow are three sons; Robert William, Burbank Calif.; Clayton Oliver, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Edwin Arthur, serving in the navy and now in Korea; three daughters, Mrs. Edna Johnson, Palisade, and Mrs. Wilda Johnson and Miss Wanda Scarlett, Craig; his mother, Mrs. Leila Scarlett, Grand Junction; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Rhoades, Paonia, and Mrs. Alex Bowers, Grand Junction; one brother, Ivan H. Scarlett, Grand Junction; and six grand children.

The funeral services for the year-old baby of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Scarlett were held at the Church of the Brethern at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. ___ spoke tender, comforting words to the parents and their children and Mrs. King and Lorence Heiny sang, quietly and softly two solos, one of which was " Suffer Little Children to come Unto Me." Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Scarlett.

Infant Son of Ross Scarlett Passed Away

Edward, the year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Scarlett of the Appleton district, passed away Saturday evening after a two-day illness. The baby, one of twins, was born September 7, 1933. Both Edward and his twin, Edwin, had been ill. Edwin is now in an improved condition.

The body is at Martins funeral home. No arrangements have been made yet.

Harland Scarlett

Delta – Funeral services for Harland Dell Scarlett, 77 of Pea Green will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Roberts Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pea Green Cemetery.

Mr. Scarlett, a resident of the Pea Green Community since 1910, died at 8:45 p.m. Friday in Delta Memorial Hospital. He was a rancher and farmer and had been a member of the Olathe IOOF Lodge until recently.

He was born April 15, 1889 in Weld County. He married his wife, Annie May [MARSH], at Delta, November 9, 1912.

Surviving are his wife; two sons , Clyde L. of Los Lunas, NM and Benny, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Donna Moormann of Wichita KS; a sister, Mrs. Amy Hollaway of Greeley; two half brothers, Harvey Whitmore of Hotchkiss and Bruce Whitmore of Eads; six grandchildren, and two great grand children.

Harland Scarlett

Delta – Harland Scarlett, 77, of Pea Green died at 8:45 p.m. Friday [August 26, 1966] in Delta Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient one day.

Mr. Scarlett had been a resident of the Pea Green community for many years. His wife is among the survivors. Arrangements are to be made with the Roberts Funeral Home.

Annie May Scarlett

Annie May Scarlett, a Pea Green homemaker, died Tuesday May 3, 1983, at her rural home. She was 90.

Mrs. Scarlett was born Annie May MARSH on Jan. 10, 1893, in rural Delta County. She spent her childhood there and attended Delta schools.

She married Harland D. Scarlett in Delta Nov. 9, 1912. He died Oct 26, 1966 in Delta.

Mrs. Scarlett was a member of the Olathe Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by one son, Bennie Scarlett.

Survivors include one son, Clyde Scarlett, Pea Green; one daughter, Donna Moormann, Wichita KS., six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Roberts Funeral Home.
