ii. GENEVIVE SUMNER, b. 1911; m. (1) UNKNOWN MILLER; m. (2) OSCAR URQUART; b. July 04, 1906; d. May 1997, Duncan, OK84.

Notes for GENEVIVE SUMNER:

5/20/1996-talked with Genevieve, gosh it sounded like talking with Grandma Scarlett. That same laugh, the same sense of humor. 5/96: have been married 42 years to Oscar, who will be 90 on the 4th of July. (he is currently on oxygen). She originally married a Miller, who died at age 42. Genevieve is 5 years younger, (says she has a little bit of a heart problem).

We talked about Great grandma Killen, (who was Irish). Married to John Jefferson Marsh. Said he had lots of stock in AT&T. Always had high hopes and ambitions. Bought a ranch in the mountains, and spent a lot of his fortune building a reservoir, using a horse and digging with some tool. Grew the best head lettuce, unusual to have been able to grow it in that area. Was able to because of the irrigation he set up. Usually spent all his money on some scheme or another. Her best memories are that they always went to the Killen home at Christmas, up on the mountain. Lived in a log house. Red geraniums in the winter windows, and sweet peas and poppies in her summer garden. Hattie died at age 94, her husband approx 10 years earlier. Many years earlier, a fortune teller had told her that he would die before her. They used to laugh about that.

Remembers parents talking about Governor Seay. Always spoke of with lots of respect (Edward Marsh m Virginia Seay]

The Marsh's were a very interesting family. They lived in Steeleville, Missouri. Genie went to a reunion in 1982, and Lawrence went with them. The Marsh's have always been intensely interested in Politics. All were (and she is ) a staunch Republican.

Walter Marsh- thinks might be g'pa [John J.] Marsh brother. [his uncle]. Remembered the beautiful music he played. He came to visit in Colorado, at Aunt Ella's. Always referred to Aunt Ella's as "The Hill" or "The Cedars". It was located West of Montrose.

Asked about the "Cow Camp". She responded "Oh, you mean uncle Harland's cow camp?"

"The whole valley was interesting".

Remembers Jennie and Maggie sweeping dirt floors. Grew up as happy childhood. Much happier times, no locks, trusted people. "Most people are good. Just keep a positive perspective. The Ten Commandments are still good rules to live by."

G'ma Marsh- remembers her talking about walking from Missouri when 3 years old. Walked behind the wagon. Sheep had been walking ahead. G'ma thought the sheep droppings were 'cute' and collected quite a few in her apron. Was teased about that for years to come.

G'ma Marsh's father was a gold prospector in Colorado. While he was gone her mother [Margaret Noland] would take in washing. Remembers stories about the woolen blankets (including body lice), and what they did to get rid of them.

Hattie chewed snuff. No one knew until she was 90 years old. This was the reason why she was always in a hurry to get home. When she was 90, she was bored one Halloween. She dressed as a Tramp, (with pillow, moustache etc) and said "let's go serenade to the neighbors" which they did, with pots and pans. "Always full of fun. Guess that was the Irish in her". G'pa Marsh was always so stern. He made the rules. Everyone followed them. He made the girls speak proper English. He was a schoolteacher. Saturday evenings were spent at the Debate Society in Delta. The topics were almost always related to politics.

Bathrooms. G'ma Marsh, before going to bed, always said; "Come on, let's go 'sit down'".

What a pleasure it was to spend close to an hour on the phone with my 'cousin' Genevive.*bb

Letter dated July 27, 1940 [enclosed with several pictures]
Postmark July 28, 1940 - Coalinga, Calif.
Dear Harland and all,

Darn your 'old hide I have a notion not to send you the pictures because you never write. Ruth sure did pretty good taking them. She took these pictures that was taken at Zelmas after we came back or she set the camera for all of them. Merle took the ones she was in.

She is talking of working in the vegetable shed again. Her brother and son are both staying with her and are supposed to be paying her $72 per month each and her daughter is getting 80 every month so I don't see why she should need to work if they paid her. I'd have thorough house cleaning if I was her. Nora always used her $80 for any thing they needed. Got a letter from Jo saying Hattie was about the same. Got one from Louise saying they were milking 38 cows. They have a milking machine but just the same there's work at that . Ruby and family have been down south on Merles vacation. Zelma is well of her skin rash and I wonder if you knew Will Tallman has been very sick with the same thing. Everybody is working and I am getting my $50 so we are all eating. I am going to the next house to take care of the night cops kids 'til midnight, all right so I'll close and hope you'll write. Bye all -

Aunt Jane [Aunt Jane - Nancy "Nan" Jane Marsh]

" [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 16, Ed. 1, Tree #1965, Date of Import: Jun 9, 1998]

Tuesday, February 12, 1991, a Memorial Service for Marine 1st. Lt. Joyce M. Sanders, took place at Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He'd been a bomber pilot, who went down in a flying mission against the Japanese in the Rabaul Area, New Britain Island, Southwest Pacific Feb. 12, 1944. The service was 47 years from the date of his presumed death. He was listed as missing in action for 1 year, then listed presumed dead. Joyce was a dive bomber pilot and was killed on his second mission when he flew his plane through anti-aircraft fire to strafe into silence the guns of a Japanese vessel threatening the safety of other planes in his squadron. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his self-sacrifice, the Purple Heart Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Victory Medal of World War II. The family received numerous citations and awards for Sanders' actions, including one from then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt and another from A.A. Vandegriff, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. Joyce's mother died, never giving up hope she would see him again. Kingfisher's Lowery-Ellyson American Legion Post No. 5 provided the Memorial Service. Joyce's brother, Max Sanders, initiated the Memorial, saying, "I just feel that it is something that needed to be done, and I'm the last of the immediate family to do it." The Sanders family was totally involved in the war effort. Max Sanders served in the Navy, His father, Marsh, served in the Seabees in the Pacific, and Mrs. Sanders worked at the Douglas defense plant in Midwest City (now Tinker Air Force Base) during World War II.
