Death of Alice Sankey

Mrs. M. Alice Sankey, wife of W. J. Sankey of Salem, died in that city on Monday morning after an illness of only few days. One day last week she was about some household duties and being unable to reach something above her, sprang up a few inches, and as she struck the ground felt something give way in her side. She sought her bed, became violently ill, and sent for her sister Loulie who reached her on Saturday, and Monday morning telegraphed her father that she could not live. A few hours later the word came that she was no more. Alice was the daughter of Mr. Edward Marsh, of this place, and she was one of the most lovable and worthy women that this county has ever produced. She was first married to Mr. James M. Heming way, who died here on the 7th of October, 1889. A little over a year later, she was married to W. J. Sankey, of Salem. Alice was one of the kindest, gentlest and best women we ever knew. She was charitable, generous and sociable, beloved by all who came to know her, and admired for her noble, Christian character. Her death is widely mourned. To her bereaved husband, father, brothers and sisters, we extend sincere sympathy and condolences. Her remains were brought to Steeleville on Tuesday and buried by the side of her first husband.

She was born in Osage County, November 16, 1853, and was a niece of Judge A.J. Seay, Supreme Judge of Oklahoma. A large number of friends and relatives came down from Salem for the funeral, which was conducted by Rev. R.F. Chew, at the Methodist Church, which was handsomely decorated with flowers for the sad occasion. In addition to Mr. Sankey's relatives, a committee consisting of Mrs. Lizzie Kenamore, Miss Eliza Newington, Miss Nettie Rouse and Mr. M.W. Gustin of the Good Templars, accompanied the body to Steeleville. The coffin was covered with wreaths of flowers, and the body was indeed lovely in its last peaceful sleep. A most touching discourse was preached, and many bitter tears were shed above the coffin.

2nd Article, same source: On December 24, 1874 Alice married Mr. Sankey. A private railroad car was waiting on the siding to take the newlyweds on their honeymoon. Alice died October 5, 1891 of a ruptured appendix either caused or made evident when she was hanging up laundry. No children

(From notes from Virginia Sigler)

My notes: the dates don't work out on the marriages. If James Hemingway died in 1889, she married Sankey a year later (..1890) how did she marry him in 1874???? ..bmb

Andre, born in 1840. He married Emma Louise Burke on October 18, 1867. One arm was partially amputated due to cancer. It was evidently cured as he lived into his late 90's. I..
