Army, Jim served with the 81st Wildcat Infantry Division of the U S Army. He was killed in action while on patrol duty against the enemy on Peleliu Island, Palau South Pacific. His unit was advancing when an undetected land mine exploded in their midst killing several men instantly. His family was given the Purple Heart to display in his memory for the bravery he showed when he put himself, along with his combat unit, between "their homeland and the war's desolation."
