Davenport Homestead

The Davenport Homestead is located about 3 miles off of U.S. Highway 64 just west of Creswell, NC in the community known as Mt. Tabor. It is owned and maintained by the Historical Society of Washington County. The grand opening was on June 5, 1999 as part of the county's bicentennial celebration. A historical marker was unveiled that day by Charlie Davenport who donated the house and land to the Historical Society in 1995. The house is estimated to have been built in the 1770's but could have been built as early as the 1740's. It has been renovated by the Historical Society and several outbuildings have been added. Daniel Davenport and his family lived in the house in the late 1700's. Daniel was Washington County's first state senator from 1800 until 1807. To find out more about Daniel Davenport click here.

Loretta Phelps of the Washington County Historical Society and a descendant of Daniel Davenport has written a cookbook entitled Davenport Homestead Vittles which preserves the way the Davenports and others ate in that part of NC in the 1700 and 1800's. She also put together Levora Davenport Witte's poems entitled Walking The Scuppernong Road With Grandpa, thus preserving the way they lived.
