Yeoman" - Lee Adair

In several early deeds in South Carolina (late 1700's) I have found
the term "yeoman" being used to describe an individual in a way
that leads me to believe it was either an occupation or a title. I have
read the dictionary definition, but wonder how the term was used in
at the time.
