When I was a kid in Ashland, KY, I used to go down to the train station
to watch the prison trains arrive on their way to Fort Campbell. The
security was very lax because those German prisoners wouldn't have gone
back to Germany if we had chipped in to buy them a ticket.

However, one of them got ambitious, mingled with the crowd, and slipped
away. He spoke perfect English, had some American money, and might have
pulled it off if he hadn't gone into a grocery
store and ordered a liter of milk. Now he knows how to say quart.
