The question and the answer still keeps me on the fence, because one of 
my close friends in the great state of Texas is both single and an 
attorney who signs himself Esq....:o)>

Bu I rather think it is both, early on in our history a single gentleman 
of means was titled Esquire which has ultimately fallen into disuse in 
our language except for it use to designate an attorney.

I'm sure there is more to this than meets the eye, but we will have to 
settle it in court...I charge $275.00 per hour plus expenses...but I'm 
not an attorney...:o)>
