You were taught wrong.  Depending on the context, the abbreviation cc stands for
many terms including: carbon copy, chief clerk, common carrier, community
college, country club, Circuit Court, Cepi Corpus, Cases in Chancery, Clerk of
Court, courtesy copy, cubic centimeters, critical care, Conseil des Deux-Cent,
etc.  But "copies" is not one of the terms for which cc stands.
