I don't know which Townshends you are studying: but I had a friend who was a
surgeon (African American) who wasnamed John  Townshend.  His family were
From S Carolina. The interesting thing is, they had a friend who was
English, a (Robert?) Farquhard Townshend, who owned ships, with whom their
ancestor they say arrived to the States from Madagascar.  His ancestor was
in fact a Malagasy.  The other interesting thing in all this is that the
Governor of Mauritius, just across the way from Madagascar in the Indian
Ocean, was Sir Robert Farquhard Townshend.  I would be interested to know if
you have found or do find any connection to the Farquhard Townshends of
Mauritius and England, as I am also researching my mother's family from
Frederick, who were immigrants from the island of Madagascar. Thanks, Wendy
