I was only following up on what someone else had said about in the early days many older people did consider applying for social security as being applying for welfare and refused to do so. I had a great aunt who absolutely refused to do so because she was not going to be on "welfare." Don't be so quick to jump on someone if you have not gone back and read what the abbreviated quote is referring to.
