Darlene:

I have Teige "the immigrant" death (from an unknown source) as "Bef. May
3,1679" and I assume that was based on the date of a will being proved or
some other legal document or something such as a marriage notice referring
to him as "late". If there was a Teige, Jr. who died Sep. 5,1674, he might
have been b. abt. 1640-1655 as were his siblings. I am unsure, from your
message, which Teige it was that you said died before 1674.

My gg uncle was Maj. Edward Manigault of "Manigault's Battalion". In the
book "Siege Train" (U.S.C. Press), his journal of the part he played in the
defense of Charleston, there are many pages in which 1st Lt. Ralph Nesbit is
mentioned. If you have not had the opportunity to read it, you should find
it interesting reading.

Maj. Manigault was somewhat of an artist, at least it the way an engineer
would be, but I have no knowledge of any other artistic talent of his. He
did make many detailed sketches of military scenes, probably not under the
best of conditions, so it is possible that in other situations he might have
been a tolerable artist.

Maj. Manigault died in 1874, so he was not alive at the time your diary was
written, but I believe there was a Brigade or Regiment still under that name
late in the century. Perhaps it had some connection to Gen. Arthur Manigault
(d.1886), although I have no knowledge of that.

I recall reading, perhaps in a history of the Allston/Alston family, that a
plantation in the Waccamaw area (not in either the Ward or Manigault family)
was the site of "practice" or parades by "The Manigault's" for several
years. Perhaps someone on the list can help us out with this? Maybe someone
might even have a roster for the group?

I do believe the manual would likely be Ralph Nesbit's and that it might
have been issued to him by his Major. Is the book in condition to make
copies? It must have names of many South Carolinians in it and I feel it has
historical value. I certainly feel the S.C. Historical Society would be
interested in having a copy for it's files, as would I.

Thank you for letting me comment on your "find". I look forward to hearing
From you.

Edward Manigault
