Subject: TIDWELL, McMURTREY surnames From: Eugene L. Atkin Date: May 23, 1998 SC List members, It's been over a month, so time to re-post the TIDWELL and McMURTREY surnames. Several TIDWELL families came down to Fairfield District from upland Virginia during or after the French and Indian War (1763). There were several brothers, and they tended to name their sons after uncles (and grandfathers), so it's all a tangle in my mind at the moment. Some names were William, Edmund, Richard, and Robert. Some had land along the Wateree River, so if anyone has a clue about where relevant land records or wills are, that would be very helpful. Most any piece of information is likely to be useful if only in ruling out alternatives. At least 3 TIDWELL men were in the Revolutionary War, two on the American side (both named Edmund), one (William) on the British side. The McMURTREY family was out west in Abbeyville County around 1795, and seems to have migrated to SW Virginia (Augusta Co), and into Tennessee and Missouri between 1795 or so and 1819 when they turn up in SE Missouri. Samuel and William are two of the given names of the men that I've come across, but there are likely to be others. Again, there should be land or will records somewhere for the time they were in SC. This name has many spelling variants. I've seen it with either one or both of the "r"s omitted. Any leads will be appreciated. I am willing to share with others working on these families.
