Please reply, not by pressing your reply button (which sends the message
to the whole list), but as new mail to me at , so as not
to clutter mailboxes of those not of the TIDWELL persuasion.. I'd be
glad to communicate with anyone interested in theTIDWELL surname, and am
glad to share, though admittedly slow.

I'm especially looking for connections with a TIDWELL born in South
Carolina in 1769. His first name might be William and his middle name
Edmund, and he eventually died in Missouri, exact date not known, but
after the 1850 census. He is definitely not either tf the well-knowns
Edmunds born in 1758 and 1787 (a father and son) who later moved to
Tennessee, but those Edmunds are both cousins who also descend from the
father of the elder William(Richard TIDWELL (abt 1680 - abt. 1739.

The person I am looking for appears to have been the son of a William
TIDWELL (b. abt 1714 in Westmoreland, by then Prince William Co., VA, and
d. 1794, Fairfield County, SC). The father was a English royalist who got
into great trouble with the Revolutionaries, went to Georgia, had his
property confiscated, got it back, and moved back to SC.

The son may have used his middle name to avoid confusion with his father
or, in later years, with his own son another William (III, if I have all
this right). On his daughter's marriage record he appears as "Wm Edmund
TIDWELL", but the handwriting could be interepreted as a "Mr." However,
no other males on the paper, including the groom have a "Mr." title. In
the 1850 census, he is listed as age 81 living with one of his known
sons, in our direct ancestry line. There is also some other
"circumstantial" evidence, but I'd really like to beef up (or reject) the
hypothesis that I have put this puzzle together rightly.

His wife's first name may have been Elizabeth, but I do not know her
Maiden Name, and she probably died early since, if I have the right
person, there's no mention of a wife either in Missouri or in Kentucky
through which he and his three children appear to have traveled en route
to Missouri, where they probably had arrived by 1819.
