In the context of our genealogy research particularly in NC/SC the connotation of yeoman means a deputy or assistant to the sheriff. If your ancestor in NC/SC was a Yeoman he was very likely one of the assistants that the Sheriff used in the duties of his job. I have seen this many times. Charles.
