A prominent merchant-planter in Charleston with strong ties to England, Laurens nevertheless became the principal organizer of the South Carolina patriot forces in 1775-1776. He then served as president of the Continental Congress in 1777-1778. Captured enroute to Holland in 1780, he played a role in the peace negotiations which led to the end of the war in the Treaty of Paris (1783). About the Henry Laurens Papers Project A 1954 report to President Dwight D. Eisenhower based on a national survey identified Laurens as one of 112 Americans of distinction in many varied fields of activity whose papers were important in documenting the American past. The project was subsequently organized by Philip M. Hamer in 1961. The first volume was published by the University of South Carolina Press in 1968. The project has evolved in style and scope to reflect the most important changes in the field of historical editing, while adapting the most pertinent technological advances to the work. The most recent volume (14) was published in 1994. The complete edition will include sixteen volumes, a cumulative index, and a comprehensive electronic edition. The Laurens Papers is sponsored by the South Carolina Historical Society and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission with support from the University of South Carolina, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the South Caroliniana Society, as well as contributions from foundations and individuals.
