Henry Laurens (1724-1792) was a reluctant leader of the American Revolution. A
prominent merchant-planter in Charleston with strong ties to England, Laurens
nevertheless became the principal organizer of the South Carolina patriot
forces in 1775-1776. He then served as president of the Continental Congress
in 1777-1778. Captured enroute to Holland in 1780, he played a role in the
peace negotiations which led to the end of the war in the Treaty of Paris
(1783).

About the Henry Laurens Papers Project

A 1954 report to President Dwight D. Eisenhower based on a national survey
identified Laurens as one of 112 Americans of distinction in many varied
fields of activity whose papers were important in documenting the American
past. The project was subsequently organized by Philip M. Hamer in 1961. The
first volume was published by the University of South Carolina Press in 1968.
The project has evolved in style and scope to reflect the most important
changes in the field of historical editing, while adapting the most pertinent
technological advances to the work. The most recent volume (14) was published
in 1994. The complete edition will include sixteen volumes, a cumulative
index, and a comprehensive electronic edition.

The Laurens Papers is sponsored by the South Carolina Historical Society and
the National Historical Publications and Records Commission with support from
the University of South Carolina, the National Endowment for the Humanities,
the South Caroliniana Society, as well as contributions from foundations and
individuals.
