This is a thorough study of the state militia from 1794, when the General 
Assembly passed legislation to bring the state militia in compliance with the
Federal Act of 1792, until 1860. Miss Flynn deals with an overview of the
militia system, the militia prior to 1794, the militia in the backcountry
(1783-1799), and events involving the militia in South Carolina during the War
of 1812. She discusses leaders of the militia (Andrew Pickens and Charles
Cotesworth Pinckney) and the generals under them (William Butler, Levi Casey,
Edward Lacey, Jr., Robert Anderson, John Barnwell, Peter Horry, William
Washington, Richard Winn, and Tristram Thomas). In her style of using actual
examples of certain events, she treats Brigade Encampments with a discussion of
an 1835 Encampment at Pickensville of the 1st Brigade made up of regiments from
Greenville, Pickens, and Anderson Districts. She discusses musters and their
economic, political, and social ramifications on the community. Finally, she
deals with the passing of the old order when the 1869 Reconstruction Legislature
reorganized the South Carolina Militia into the National Guard.
