INDIAN STOCKS AND TRIBES AT VARIOUS TIMES IN SOUTH CAROLINA 
IROQUOIAN STOCK (north western section) : 
Cherokees - Many villages, which are sometimes erroneously spoken of as
tribes. 
The Elasses (Elatse, Elatseyi, Ellijay) were really a group settlements,
e.g., of the Cherokees, some of which at one time were in South
Carolina. 
SIOUAN STOCK (northern, northeastern, and eastern sections): 
Catawbas - Largest and most important of this stock. Many names,
including almost every conceivable way of imitating the sound (Kadapaw,
e.g., to such as Atakwa, Cattoways, Esaws, and Usheree). 
Waxhaws. 
Cheraws. 
Chicoras (called also Chickorees, Chichanees, and perhaps Waterees). 
Waterees. 
Sampits (Sampas) - Most probably Siouan. 
Sutarees - (east of Catawbas). 
Sugarees (Sugaus, Sagarees). 
Hooks, Back Hooks, Black Hooks, or Pohocs - Probably Siouan. 
Congarees - (south of the river by Popple's map, 1733). 
Keyauwee - From North Carolina along the Peedee. No connection with
Keowee or Kiawah. 
Santees - (spelled also Seretees, Sattees, etc.). 
Peedees. 
Seewees - Elasie named among Siouan tribes ("Shaftesbury Papers" 334),
but see under Cherokees. 
Enos - (came to Upper Peedee from North Carolina before 1730; perhaps
before 1715; perhaps with Keyauwees). 
Waccamaws (Waggamaws). 
Winyaws - (also called Weenees). 
MUSKHOGEAN STOCK: 
Apalachees - (Allendale of Hampton County apparently, near the Savannah
River, 1704-16. Seem the same as tribe called in South Carolina
Palachuckola. Merged with Creeks after Yemassee War). 
Yemassees - (Yoas apparently a sLibdivislori). The Salchichees are
surmised by J. T. Lanning in his "Spanish Missions in Georgia" to have
been connected with the Yemassees. 
Creek - (on middle or upper Savannah, apparently 1566. Original name
Apalachees). 
Chickasaws - (small number of refugees from west on the Savannah
opposite Augusta until Revolution). 
Notchees - (small band of Natchez expelled from Mississipp). 
Cusabos - (also called Cussabees, Corsaboys, etc.). Most, if not all, of
the
following little tribes were of the Cusabo group: 
Escamacus (Uscamus) - Of or near St. Helena Island. 
Ashepoos (Ishpows). 
Bohickotts (Bohicketts). 
Coosaws. 
Cotachicach - (Chatuache, Satuache, near Ashepoo mouth). 
Cusso - (also called Casors, Cusaboys; by Ribault's men, apparently
Couexi). 
Combahees. 
Edistos - (French Audusta, Spanish Orista). 
Etiwans - (also called Itawans, Eutaws). 
Isaws. 
Kiawahs. 
Salchichees (in South Carolina or Georgia? Connected with
Saltketchers?).
