This history of Georgetown County, South Carolina, is the story of one of the
most aristocratic regions of our nation - in antebellum Georgetown District, the
Old South of myth and legend existed. It was an extreme case of a society
composed of a relatively few, vastly rich, well-educated white families living
in plantation splendor on the labor of thousands of slaves. It is the story of
rice - the one staple crop on which that society was based. But the collapse of
the rice-planting aristocracy, which had staggered through war and social
upheaval, only to be obliterated by a series of hurricanes and Gulf South
competition, was dramatic. Reviews of the book, upon its original publication,
commented that "Professor Rogers has written a history which exemplifies
impressive research, balanced relationship of local to regional and national
issues, and a readable literary style lightly laced with humor," and have called
it a "model" county history stating that it "is much more than the story of one
county; it is the history of plantation society in microcosm."
