Subject: The Court Martial of Edward Cooper From: Jrigdon Date: May 22, 2000 One of the more touching stories I have found in Confederate Veteran Magazine involves the Court Martial of Edward Cooper, an artilleryman in the C.S.A. I have identified the following possibilities for the identity of the company in which Edward Cooper served: AL - Goldthwaite's Battery SC - Manigault's Battalion - 1st Company B SC - Waccamaw Lt. Artillery - M. Ward's Company VA - W. P. Carter's Company The circumstances surrounding the courtmartial are encompassed in this letter From his wife Mary: "MY DEAR EDWARD.-I have always been proud of you, and since your connection with the Confederate Army I have been prouder of you shall ever. I would not have you do anything wrong for the world; but before God, Edward, unless you come home, we must die! Last night I was roused by little Eddie crying. I called and said, 'What's the matter, Eddie?' and he said, 'O mamma, I am so hungry!' And Lucy, your darling Lucy, she never complains, but she is growing thinner every day, and I repeat, unless you come home, we must all die. YOUR MARY." The rest of the story is my featured article this week on my Best of Confederate Veteran Website at http://www.researchonline.net/cvm Click on Featured Article! Enjoy!
