Subject: The Civil War in South Carolina From: Galinahist Date: July 04, 1998 Thanks to everyone who have submitted pieces for this project the last few months. Special thanks is due to Barbara Svetlick who submitted ALL the rosters of the men from Marlboro County, SC helping to bring the total to over 10,000 men on line who served from SC. The newest rosters added are: 1st Infantry Regiment Historical Notes 1st Infantry Regiment Field and Staff 5th Infantry Regiment First Company F 5th Infantry Regiment Second Company F 5th Infantry Regiment First Company G 5th Infantry Regiment Second Company G 5th Infantry Regiment First Company H 8th Infantry Regiment Company G 8th Infantry Regiment Company K 21st Infantry Regiment Company I 23rd Infantry Regiment Company G 24th Infantry Regiment Company B 26th Infantry Regiment Company D South Carolina had an estimated 65,000 men who served in the Civil War, and approx. 22,000 died. One of these new companies, Co. G of the 23rd, had 90% casualties in the war. We have now listed approx. 15% of the men who served from South Carolina and I have on hand approx. 40,000 names overall. If you don't find someone on line that you're looking for, drop me a note and I'll do a quick browse through the remaining rosters. Many of these are unorganized however, and some are handwritten copies, so I can't yet guarantee that I'll find the man you're looking for. The Civil War in South Carolina is located at http://members.aol.com/superstore/sccd.htm Several people have asked if I know of similar initiatives for other states. I would like to create a page of links to people who are working on - or interested in - similar projects - to document EVERY man who served from a particular state. If you have such a site, or know of one, please let me know. Thanks again for all your help.
